It's a pretty good album but how on earth did it sell a reported 7,000,000 copies? That's only 1,000,000 less than BHN! And furthermore how did Oasis go from DBTT selling 7,000,000 and DOYS only selling 1,500,000? There's got to be something not quite right.

People were still buying albums in 2005, they did a really successful tour (despite Liam's voice being at its lowest ebb) and had two number 1 singles in the UK off it. DOYS was a bit of a disaster full stop.

Also I think around that time there were big releases from Foo Fighters, Coldplay and the White Stripes, plus probably the last 'new wave' of indie bands came through, many of whom quoted Oasis as their main influence. The scene was so much stronger back then. Makes me sad thinking about it.

If the charts show us anything, it's that generic sells. From 2001-2007 Oasis were making very uninspired, very standard, very formulaic music - which is a great recipe for moderate-to-great commercial success when your brand has already been established; that's why Bono gets to do his Messiah impressions in stadiums every other week.
I mean, the music's shite - but who cares? Certainly not Noel Gallagher at the time, it seems.

Possibly not at the gigs so much and I don't remember them having any major high profile gigs on TV. There was far less (if any) social media for Liam to get slagged off.

Ah, I'm guessing everyone still had it in their mind that his voice was a shadow of what it used to be but as you said didn't really have anywhere to voice their opinion to anyone else or vice versa.

weve discussed this in the DBTT thread.
oasis simply had a resurgence, as Ive said it was more a fad in certain songs like lyla and the importance of being idle rather than interest increasing in the band again as a whole package, individual songs alone can drive up album sales AKA wonderwall , people wernt waiting for DOYS because they didnt care, Lyla being put on fifa 06 opened up the market abit as well due to it being quite a big game. Plus back in 2005 it was probably wasnt as easy to get hold of individual songs (I cant remember) like you can now so the only way to get a song was to get the album, most people arnt going to go hunting for hard copy single releases when the album is right there.
DBTT was basically a tony Christie moment when peter kay did this, oasis just managed to do it with a new song as opposed to an old song.
side note: ronnie corbett falling off the treadmill at 3:07 gets me everytime.
people wernt clamoring for a new tony christie album, something clicked again because of this skit with people and he got another round for short time.

I was jesting, its a thing apparently that some people dont understand how some videos on youtube can have over 7 million views when theres only that amount of people on the planet. as you stated getting the millions and billions mixed up. the population of london alone is over 8.5 million.

But did it really sell 7 million copies? I've always been skeptical on that number. I can believe 2-3 million range. Let's say it sold a million copies in the UK and maybe 200,000 in America. That is only 1.2 million, 5.8 million short. Are we really supposed to believe that Oasis sold that many albums outside the two biggest music markets in the world? Unless they sold millions in Japan and Germany I have a hard time believing these figures.

Be here now sold 8 million with the big expectations from WTSMG so to get 7 million near a decade after the madness is questionable, plus looking at the peak chart positions its not majorly out of line with heathen chemistry which sold only 3.5 million. The major dip in sales for DOYS is also weird seeing as DBTT did so well. Youd expect at least some of that success to carry over outside of its own cycle, maybe the 4 million mark at least? certainly not their lowest selling album ever of only 1.6 million, doesnt make much sense in that respect. like you said looking at the UK / US sales theres a major gap to be made up there, to be holding around the 3 million mark for two albums to over doubling that for one album just to slice that back down to nearly a 7th of DBTT sales for DOYS seems abit unlikely. Thing is theres no real solid reason why DBTT was suddenly something everyone wanted to buy. HC wasnt an almighty success, it only sold 500,000 more than SOTSOG that was considered a failure, and theres evidence to suggest DBTT wasnt the big success as its shown to be either because of DOYS.

Let's say it sold 1 million in the U.K, 1 million in the rest of Europe, 500,000 in the U.S, 1 million in South America, 500,000 in Japan, and 500,000 in the rest of the world. That's really really generous and it's still just 4.5 millions.

The exact number is 6 millions not 7, this is a fair number, in 2005 people were still buying albums, X&Y by Coldplay sold an impressive number of 14 millions copies, so Oasis selling 6 millions at that time wasn't something out of this world.
DBTT put Oasis on the map again, their two number one singles says a lot I guess, both their poppiest singles since MG days got them more attetion, also the album got better reviews than the last two albums.

Internet. Album sales are a bad metric now, and were in 2008 too.
DBTT was a return to form. 'Nuff said.

Ummm WHAT!?

This issue of Billboard came out around the release of DBTT and talks some numbers, i.e. 200k shipped to Japan initially. It also looks at how the Markets stack up percentage-wise of their sales. books.google.com/books?id=-BIEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA41&lpg=PA41&dq=don't+believe+truth+oasis+sales+united+states&source=bl&ots=bLxsGkp3JD&sig=hEUNZyLzySYmxQPF5WjCfavf_v0&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjtpYWcsInRAhUGwFQKHfThAxYQ6AEIUzAL#v=onepage&q=don't%20believe%20truth%20oasis%20sales%20united%20states&f=false
