Every January I tend to go on a massive Neil Young binge. I’m a big fan and am especially fond of his work from 2000-2014. His 1969-79 work is always recognised, as it should be and his 90s work was a true comeback after an interesting and explorative (for hardcore fans only it seems) 80s period. But in the 2000s we see (at least I feel) his work climbed a step higher, melding the best of his folky and ragged rock stylings, with his tendency to explore interests and concepts successfully.
Anyways, preamble aside, my top NY songs post 2000
Distant camera Gateway of Love Going Home Bandit It’s a dream Living with war Angry world Walk like a giant All of those dreams My hometown (Springsteen cover)
The songs I’ve chosen are all from 2000 to 2014. The last ten years have been interesting but not as brilliant as this period IMO which I rate as my favourite NY era.

One Way Road was played live acoustic as part of the radio session they did in Toronto 2005, I’m pretty sure. Idle, Talk tonight, OWR, wonderwall and another. Never mind I see you mentioned it. That’s what I get for skimming.

Not linking the profile to avoid some people going there to harass the original poster but... woah The picture quality is low but I can figure out some names A CD from the DBTT sessions with The Roller on it. A 2006 CD with 13 acoustic songs. "4 ANYONE", maybe Oasis demo? Wow! Probably loads more out there too. Thanks for sharing!

Went to see them last night and they were stunning. 14 songs have been played in 1,5 hour time including Chained To A Cloud which made the debut for the live performance. Rachel is an absolute diva! carlober, are you seeing them too on this tour? That’s exciting to hear, it’s one of my top tracks off the new record (Alife and Andalusia plays being the top two). It’s a month now until the gig I think. Going to have to go through the back catalogue. I only know Souvlaki, the last self titled one, and the new one.

So, it basically feels like (Probably) All in the Mind but with John Squire doing his bit rather than Johnny Marr.
Which might sound terrible as most here dislike that song but I don’t mind it. I don’t think it’s great but I don’t dislike it either. And I feel similarly about this new one. It’s got the trademark (almost to an exaggerated degree) Liam vocal snarl, the trademark Squire “Waterfall” guitar (again very evidently so) and of course, this latest attempt to capture the ‘66 garage psychedelia of “Rain”. I don’t see why that obsession exists - it us a great song but there’s so many others to tap into that haven’t been done to death.
The rainbow lines definitely are the weak point. I was hoping for more of a fusion of Liam and Squire’s skills but this feels like more of a direct cut and paste job of their most stereotyped features. Which isn’t a terrible thing (it is Liam and Squire after all) but it did leave me wanting to feel more satisfied. Not terrible at all but definitely not great either. Though it does have its great and terrible moments. You can figure out which is which I’m sure.

I see almost all the singles are back and albums too, at least they’re in correct order but not playable yet. Have you noticed the same?

Oasis studio albums were pulled from streaming services in Canada. Anyone else have this problem? only Cigs n Alcohol and Falling Down singles on spotify since this morning. and itunes yesterday, I've been told Yes, it seems to be true. Only the Falling Down and I’m Outta Time singles are still there, the rest are in unclickable grey and all out of order. Looks horrendous. I had them all neatly organised and now this… I do have all the singles but don’t have access to all 400+ of my CDs as I’ve moved so I was really relying on Apple Music.

I really like the song. It’s been stuck in my head the last couple nights. It is simple, it is basic, and it is definitely a b-side but that is just fine. There’s nothing wrong with that. Even if it is the kind of song Noel could write in his sleep, that’s fine. I like those kinds of songs (“just let it come down over me” being a perfect example) and I also like the bigger productions like “think of a number” and “open the door..”. There’s room for all.

I’ll admit to mostly listening to new releases of artists I already like (80%) more than new artists and songs (20%). Not because I dislike new stuff, it’s just that if I only have so much time to listen to music, I’m usually going to choose something by an artist I love rather than something new. Sometimes those new artists do become favourites, like Idles and Mitski, but usually they don’t.
That said, the albums I enjoyed most this year:
Iggy Pop - every loser Ryan Adams - morning glory Noel - council skies Rancid - tomorrow never comes Blur - the ballad of Darren The hives - death of Randy Fitz Simmons Mitski - the land is inhospitable and so are we
I’ve not yet listened to the latest Slowdive. I’m seeing them in Feb so I’ll have that one to start 2024 off. Also haven’t listened to the new songs from Libertines or Idles yet as I’m waiting for the albums.

Maybe it’s just me but is it on Apple Music to “preorder”? Not seeing it yet and probably should be there by now.

So glad to see this released. It’s the perfect closer for my annual compilation.
I loved the live version and was quite disappointed to see it replaced by “The Mighty Quinn”, even though Noel seems quite happy singing it.
(Wasn’t “All You Need is Love” the closing cover during the WBTM tour?)
I hope it makes a return to the set. It suits CS songs well. Maybe by next summer’s gig at Alexandra Palace…but I’m not holding my breath! Just glad to have this recording now.

It’s taken me a week but my thoughts on the gig: Arrived at 6:30 (doors at 6) managed to get in about five rows back from front and centre in the standing area. I did indeed see those guys pushing their way through as HTWA started. Glad they were rebuffed. Noel got on stage at 9pm so we’d been keeping that spot long enough. I generally knew the setlist and knew I was most excited for “going nowhere” and “dead in the water” but forgot we’d get “you know we can’t go back” and “we’re on our way now” which were absolute highlights for me. Also seeing Noel get the Les Paul out for “in the heat of the moment” was a surprise. Hearing “we’re gonna get there in the end” felt pretty emotional and intense for me. Really a special moment. I was surprised by how much I liked hearing “open the door l” live - and the third song in. I’ve always liked it but I loved it live. I really enjoyed the run of HFB songs but the new album —> HFB best —> Oasis hits sequence felt quite predictable. Would have been nice to mix it up and keep us on our toes a bit more. Not a lot of banter and such but I didn’t expect that. It was a great HFB gig, everyone seemed satisfied. I’m still a bit surprised he ends the main set with LBL instead of TMP when that one goes down so spectacularly (not that LBL doesn’t get a great reaction) It was nice to see Noel enjoy doing The Mighty Quinn even though I’d much much rather have heard “love will tear us apart”. I wish he’d have kept that cover going. Last point: Chris sharrock doesn’t seem to have aged since I last saw him with Oasis in 2008. Gem looks older, Noel looks older, but 15 years later Chris Sharrock is exactly the same! Could you hear what was being said to Noel after the run of Council Skies songs? I could only hear his response (“I can’t understand you because your mouth is full of shit”) Definitely couldn’t tell what he was saying and he was a few rows and a little to the right of me. Noel’s response got a good laugh though.

Some thoughts on Wembley - Pretty Boy is good live. - I don’t know who you are, but stop singing ‘Open the door….’ with such gusto, it just encourages him. - I like all the previous NGHFB songs after Easy Now through to Dead in the Water, but it was very flat. - dead in the water is great. TBH, crowd only really woke up at this point. - going nowhere is a decent bside but flat here - Was predictably tremendous after that. - change the setlist! - actually, don’t change it, but mix the songs up -I think I paid £28 for two beers and one wine - Wembley Arena needs knocking down. It’s taken me a week but my thoughts on the gig: Arrived at 6:30 (doors at 6) managed to get in about five rows back from front and centre in the standing area. His new best of is a good listen! It absolutely is. I’m so glad he’s included tracks that aren’t found on the albums like Armatopia and Priest, which are two of my favourites on the new collection. I only wished Rise could have made the cut as it very much belonged up there with the best of his efforts. But otherwise, it’s a solid collection. New Town Velocity still stirs me up the way it did when I first heard it.

Listening to the Oasis podcast episode about the book - what an achievement this is. I like how the research is described as forensic! Clearly a labour of love by the sounds of it. Going to order my copy tomorrow.
