This topic was already discussed in another thread, but I found it so interesting that I think it deserves its own. A huge thank you goes to davidjay, one of the most valuable members of this forum, who posted the first OOPS mix here and gave me the idea. So, what's OOPS? It means Out Of Phase Stereo (more here: www.sharoma.com/oops.htm): in easy words it's an incorrect way of connecting the stereo speakers which is able to reveal or highlight some sounds which are usually hidden in the normal stereo mix. It's very simple: you get a stereo track, split it into two mono tracks, invert the first (in such a way, the positive peaks become the negative ones) and listen! The sound waves which were equal in the left and right stereo track get canceled out: it's a bit like performing the operation -(1)+(1), which is obviously equal to zero. So, I've spent my morning playing with various tracks, and I'm posting here the OOPS mixes I got... which imho are really interesting. I don't think this violates any rule in the forum: the tracks, even if they come from officially released material (which I've bought and ripped for personal use), are very different from the original songs. To avoid problems, I've uploaded the bunch to Soundcloud and set them to private, so that they can be reached only by people here and nobody can download them. Anyways, enough talking, let's get to the tracks: D'You Know What I Mean: soundcloud.com/m-car/dykwim-oops/s-hwzpKThat awesome guitar sound, usually buried under the wall of sound, really stands out in this! Unbelievably good! Don't Go Away: soundcloud.com/m-car/dga-oops/s-0yh3ROOPSing this track reveals the acoustic guitar and the strings. You can still hear the echo of Liam's voice. Very haunting! Those strings... Gas Panic!: soundcloud.com/m-car/gaspanic-oops/s-6DLdlAnother track where there are literally tons of things happening in the background: you need to listen to this, its 100% psychedelic, Noel's backing vocals are very clear and they are frightening somehow. And, as with DYKWIM, the guitar sound really becomes alive! Angel Child: soundcloud.com/m-car/angelchild-oops/s-QuinpI wanted to try OOPS with an acoustic track. The result? It's a perfect instrumental! It does sound great. If anybody is interested, I have more OOPS mixes in the works, some of which are as interesting as these ones...

Holy shit, the guitar on D'You Know What I Mean is incredible! What a shame this is buried in the wall of sound.
Don't Go Away sounds great as well, makes me want the BHN remaster even more.

Great work, thanks for posting these! Another good one to OOPS is the White Label Demo mix of Columbia (on the CD single of Supersonic). The backing track is basically mono with a little reverb, with Liam's amazing vocal and the samples as the main stereo content. So OOPSing that track gives you an isolated vocal with only a very faint trace of the instrumental backing.
Half the World Away might be a good one to try - I think there's more hard panning in that track than you usually get on some of the rockier Oasis songs. On BHN OOPSing the rockier tracks often gives you the densely layered rhythm guitar parts with vocals faintly in the background.

WOAH. How can you miss that? I like the piano and I like that weird sound that you can hear constantly, are those the glasses? Should've been louder in the mix.

I really like BHN, but god dammit did they fuck up the mixing/mastering/whatever of that album. Listen to how gorgeous Don't Go Away is with the acoustic guitar and the strings right up in front for you.

My thoughts exactly. It's so beautiful. Love the trumpets too.
Now listening to the Gas Panic one. Awesome.

I would suggest Born on a different cloud and girl in the dirty shirt.
The backing vocal on GP is so monotonus that it sounds like it was digitaly treated or something.

Wow these are great. Where Did It All Go Wrong sounds so angry somehow, it really could have been something special that song. It shows just how beautiful Noel's guitar work is sometimes, shame it gets quite so buried.

Thanks carlober! Great job on these. I think those high backing vocals on Columbia are either Tony or Chris of the Real People.
I just noticed that if you OOPS Bonehead's Bank Holiday (off CD2 of the deluxe Morning Glory reissue) it makes parts of Bonehead's vocal more clearly audible.
One other I checked was Hey Now - OOPS mutes Liam's vocal and the drums, leaving just the reverb and highlights Noel's guitar and the synth string parts.

Clip of Bonehead's Bank Holiday out of phase. You can hear excerpts of Bonehead's take more clearly across the mix. Bonehead: The thing that'll stay with me is Bonehead's Bank Holiday, the song we recorded as the extra track for the vinyl. I remember Noel strumming it out - this really quirky song with really poppy lyrics. And then he says, "I want you to sing it," knowing I can't fucking sing. So Liam takes me down the pub to get some Dutch courage. Two pints turn into six. Soon I'm in double figures. We come back at midnight, legless, and there's Noel and Owen, waiting for me to record my vocal. The lyrics are written down, but I'm too fucking drunk to read, so I've got Liam holding me up, holding the lyrics in front of my face. We're making up the words. Everyone's crying with laughter. Months later I got an envelope through the post with this cassette. It just had BBH written on it and it was five hours of outtakes of Bonehead's Bank Holiday from Owen. I still play it a lot. It's this snapshot of the band at its most harmonious. (MOJO June 2005) Bonehead OOPS clip.mp3 (746.65 KB)

Good work guys I am not trying to be a dick but some of these aren't something new. I made some of these years ago. They're in my Youtube Channel (check my sig).

Anyone else done this with 'Bag It Up'? Interesting to hear some of noel's vocals more clearly, and acoustic guitar too.

I've just tried this one: you do get a very clear version of Noel's backing vocals! It'll be on Soundcloud in a few minutes... ----------------------- EDIT: here it is Bag It Up: soundcloud.com/m-car/bagitup-oops/s-EPsQ4
