The common consensus is that the best album The Jam made was All Mod Cons. It’s a brilliant record but for me, it’s follow up, Setting Sons, is my favourite.
It’s an album like no other, hitting some hard notes as it captures a very interesting concept: how our relationships (of all kinds) influence our identity, and what happens when those relationships start to dissolve, fade away, or break down. That’s something that happens in life but I feel never gets talked about. Yet, here we have Paul Weller at - what, 23 years old? - writing songs about midlife transitions and the pain these losses give.
Thick as Thieves is the best case in point - a lifelong friendship that one day changes. The relationship fed the narrators identity and now that it’s gone? Now what? It’s the same thing with the breakdown of a marriage and domestic dream (Private Hell), an imaginary relationship that fuels an identity (Girl on the Phone), a work relationship and identity (Smithers Jones, Little Boy Soldiers). Class identity in Eton Rifles. Lots of it about outgrowing friendships - Burning Sky, Saturdays Kids. One of my personal favourites is Wasteland, which I believe should have closed the album rather than the fine but out of place Heatwave cover. I’d have put When You’re Young on at track 5 instead. It fits perfectly, thematically and sonically.
My Setting Sons edit:
1. Girl on the phone 2. Thick as thieves 3. Private hell 4. Little boy soldiers 5. When you’re young 6. Burning sky 7. Smithers Jones (I prefer the WYY b-side version) 8. Saturdays kids 9. Eton rifles 10. Wasteland
If you’re a fan of the album or curious about it, check out the demos for this album. The solo Eton Rifles is worth it alone if nothing else.
Maybe I’m reading into it but that’s what this album speaks to me. It’s potent stuff and I am constantly astounded as to how Weller could have detailed all this at his still quite young age.

Off to Manchester for the first time, any places to recommend for an Oasis fan? Adding these here as well. Go see Sifters! It’s a little shop on Fog Lane in Burnage, about 5 mins walk or so from Burnage station. The boardwalk isn’t a venue or hotel anymore but you can see a blue plaque outside it, it’s on Princess Street. I was there 10 years ago. Pretty surreal as an Oasis fan to be there. If you’re into the Smiths, the Salford Lads Club has apparently got a nice little shrine in there.

I’ve got the 2009 vinyl with the green spine and Hamish McBain liner notes (loved those essays), the one that came some years after in 2015-17 somewhere, and the 10” vinyl box set. I don’t think I’ll pick this marble one up, unless I come across a cheap one. No need really.
I’d have loved a compilation, even digital playlist, of the best live versions of Oasis b-sides. Lots to choose from there. Maybe I should get on that.

This is the album that turned me from fan to super fan. This is the one that made me track down singles in shops and live tracks on file share sites. This is the one that got me reading every interview I could with the band. The fact that it’s not a proper studio album means almost nothing because this record itself means so, so much to me.
Almost all my favourite Oasis songs are on it. And it’s the best representation of the breadth of music they made.
That said, Round are Way definitely should have been on there in place of The Swamp Song.

Just read this today. Turns my stomach. Johnny was always a great member of Oasis forums, I’ve seen his name around for years. I really hope he’s okay. It’s been a month. How horrifying for his family.

I know that many here will never agree with me and I’m okay with that. But I love ABWR. It’s one of my favourites from the album (and there’s a lot I like on this album). I like the guitar riff, I like the way Liam’s more rough vocal suits the song, I like the words.
I had been going through a bit of a difficult time and the day DBTT came out, I was out for a walk and listening to it and this one just hit me. And I felt better. It still helps clear the debris in my mind sometimes. It’s not an otherwise special or remarkable song but it’s always got a special place in my heart.
I also adore TUTS, TMOS, POTQ. I like GGTIA a lot and I think if KTDA had a better vocal take (like a good few other songs on the album) and had been done live a few times, it would have been a lot more impressive.

Is the deluxe CD worth it? I’m still not feeling bothered about it. It looks cool but I don’t think has much worthwhile that’s included, is there?
Also: after listening to that live version of Better Days, how the hell did it not make the cut? Definitely should have been on there!

Unacceptable that this strong version of Better Days and Live Forever were dropped from the album. You can retrieve them here Thanks for this. I do wish they’d included more COYK songs (only 3 made the cut - and it seems a lot of the COYK promo was to hype this gig) or Liam solo songs than the same Oasis ones that were on DBTRT. Otherwise, no complaints.

So Liam has done a new cover: Jimi Hendrix’s “are you experienced?”
When I heard about it on the Oasis podcast I was sleepy and thought I dreamt it when I woke up. But it happened! He’s done it twice. Not sure how I feel about it yet but here it is.

I’m really loving the new Hives album. It feels most reminiscent of Tyrannosaurus Hives. The last album Lex Hives was in 2012 and was just okay but this new one is consistent and hits hard. Can’t wait to see them again in April.

I think Liam's career needs something new, something fresh I got the feeling that there's much less hype around his name Nah I don't think the hype around his name has been harmed in any way, I think people were probably just a bit put off by him daring to do something different. Once he's got the DM tour out of the way hopefully he'll go for a really heavy, almost punk kind of sound. It's what I've always wanted from him and I'm sure he'd nail it What I would love is an album with Liam, Paul Simonon of the Clash on bass, Steve Diggle of Buzzcocks on guitar or Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols.

Going to see them this Saturday. I try to avoid setlist.fm because I want to be surprised. No idea what they’ll play (apart from a few more obvious cuts) but I’d love to hear Trim Trabb or Sing.

I saw Blondie this weekend actually, they were great. Hard to believe all these icons are as old as they are. But then again, we are aging too. I still feel shocked when I think Morning Glory came out nearly 30 years ago. Yeah, Blondie were playing at a festival over the weekend and that's where Debbie Harry celebrated her birthday. It was in the paper yesterday. But she's doing so well at nearly 80. And, you're right we are aging too. Time flies it really does. Yup that’s where I was. And think as much as Parallel Lines gets all the love, I think I like Eat to the Beat better. The sound they got on that one is terrific and so suited to the songs.
