Agree with both of the last posts. The unfinished nature of Moon is why I hardly listen to it, I feel. Also, i think Noel is obviously still feeling the divorce and just wants to be back to basics for a bit while he's recovering his self-esteem (my uneducated guess). I would assume if he finds a new love we might see a variation of the 2017-2019 Noel come out again, maybe without the anger but just the confidence to push his boundaries a bit in a different direction. We can hope.

I'm fine with Council Skies. There are nice moments on it, certainly a return to what he did, ironically, on Chasing Yesterday. I think, overall, his work has been extremely varied. Much as he brags about making "out there" tunes, he's never going to be the guy who'll pull the trigger on an AA project. He might not even be the guy who can fully land it. He also has limitations as a co-writer, and is a fairly limited player. I think, however, what Holmes understood about Noel is that he's a good mimic. He can copy any sound, and if he copies enough new sounds, he can make something very unique for himself. The problem with that is Noel doesn't like to struggle. He's a diligent worker, particularly in his own process. But he doesn't like to struggle in another process. And what Holmes asked of for him wasn't just to struggle, but for Noel to be very raw and open about his own limitations. I think if Noel were a more accomplished player, he'd probably welcome that kind of tension. Because he'd have enough confidence in his skill to eventually land it. But Noel is always going to be self-conscious about his limitations, and I think that's ultimately why he hasn't worked with Holmes since or another producer like Holmes. And instead thinks he can replicate that creativity on his own. He simply doesn't want to be that open again. Even with MOON it seemed like a project that needed a little more time to cook. He admits he screwed up the sequencing of tracks. The album does feel 1-2 songs short. I wish Black Star and This Is The Place were on MOON. It needed to be rounded out more. Always felt cheap how Noel included Dead In The Water on this album. I know it’s a bonus track but it is mostly what is praised from this LP. He ain't THAT guy. Moon is the extent he's willing or even can push himself, and even then, it's the culmination of many previous failed attempts to experiment. It's clear from his history that he doesn't ultimately land these kind of projects. And I think people really need to accept the literal decades worth of evidence that we have.

I do think WBTM is the most "far out" we'll ever get from him. And although he's expressed his desire to work with David Holmes again, I don't see it happening sadly. I don't think it sounds unfinished though, I think it's his most cohesive to date, bar NGFHB. His first is Noel by numbers and Chasing Yesterday is a mix of a lot of things he's capable of doing but yet they work together, which is why it's my favourite. But WBTM comes close second because the songs are mostly great, the production and sounds are great, it's full of joy and David Holmes was able to push Noel to take his basic songwriting abilities and make the songs better than just an acoustic guitar and a tambourine. I feel like he made most of Council Skies on auto-pilot. Like he's trying to use what he learned with WBTM on songs like Pretty Boy and he also created 2 and maybe even 3 of the best songs he's done (Dead To The World, Trying to find a world and Think of a Number) and two songs are more akin to songs on Chasing Yesterday. But four songs are back to Noel-by-numbers, two of which I find are almost middle of the road doctor's waiting room radio sounding (INGUT and Open the Door). This record is all over the place but not in a good way like Chasing Yesterday was. Noel's 56, he is set in his ways and we are not going to get A) experimentalism anymore. I don't think that's true. I hope it's not true. 56 is way too young to sit on your ass and stop evolving until you die. Look at what Tears for Fears did in 2022 even if they're both past 60. I don't think experimenting or evolving is a young man's game.

He was so committed in interviews around those times to the current sound when now it all seems no more than disingenuous.

I'm pretty sure the burned CD with the "quietest mixes ever" of the Amorphous Androgynous recording of his first album that he kept in his socket drawer is the most "far out" experimental thing he'll ever be capable of doing. I hope Sara knows what she's possessing now . Seriously, I'd love to hear those recordings, those little snippets we have sound so promising and indeed far out. Noel needs a producer, I think. As a helping hand (Mark Coyle), a sonic saviour (Owen Morris), a guide (nothing more, D Sardy) or an inspiration (David Holmes). Although I really enjoy Council Skies. And the EP era. Somehow I dig "Noel by Numbers" as well - if the melody is right, it just feels like coming home, you all know what I mean.

I was just talking about it in a context of doing something different, innovative or experimental. To me though, INGUT, Open the Door, Easy Now and Council Skies are Noel by numbers but just not as interesting as other Noel by numbers. Riverman is Noel by numbers, Everybody's on the Run is Noel by numbers, Trying to find a World..., Dead in the Water, Soldier Boys and Jesus Freaks, etc. But the four songs from Council Skies that I consider to be that are just not that good in comparison I'm afraid, especially INGUT and Open The Door.

The decline of Noel Gallagher has been his own undoing, mainly by his slagging off of his own fans but probably more damaging now is how boring its got. And how many times he lets us down.
Said I Wanna Live In Dream would have had 3 guitar solos, a choir etc but because Liam got married it couldn’t be recorded. Then when it appeared on his solo album, it was a rehash of the demo.
Scrapped a very exciting AA album.
Scrapping the Be Here Now rethink after 1 track.
Claimed there was no going back after his big David Holmes awakening but yet here we are after just 1 album and a few shoddy EPs and he’s back to normal.
Announcing the annual Magic Secrets RSD releases, didn’t make it to year 2.
^ Its difficult to get excited about anything he says anymore.
So to expect this acoustic album mentioned is unwise. If he does do one it would probably be like Ashcrofts acoustic album which wasn’t really a full on acoustic job.
And then theres the claims of how many songs he has but we have 5 year gaps between albums, and yet somehow diminishing returns.
He talks a good game but ultimately he's out of ideas. He has nothing but the old trusty by the numbers songs that his fanbase are growing tired of. For as shit as Beady Eye were, they were more adventurous in their 2 years of releasing music than noel has been in well over a decade now, and its a shame.

It's not quite as bad as your last paragraph, but it's not great either. I listened to the last album for about a week, and then just didn't play it anymore. I've no desire to return to it. Hopefully when the divorce is completely out of the way, he'll put some time and effort into some new tracks.

To my own surprise, Spotify says CS is by far the Noel's album I have listened to the nost (and that's saying something) It does not have so many outstanding songs as other albums but it is the one that flows better from start to end for me

I agree conceptually but Council Skies is a good record, regardless of what y'all say lol Maybe but we cant really hear it under all that compression. Noel clearly needs a new start. Sonically, first, he just need to change the way he record guitars, which all have the same sound on every song for the past 15 years. I mean come on. He needs to change the recording process, but i guess having his own studio (i mean, his house with expensive music equipments) does not help. Noel needs to be more "organic" and less "robotic" in his recording sessions. Chasing Yesterday, Council Skies are not all bad albums but they lack that "flame". A flame that was about to show on WBTM and the EPs but didn't quite explode. It's time Noel tries and not hide behind studio tricks and release a really organic record. Something raw, that breathes life. If he can.

It's a nice enough record but doesn't hold muster this many months down the line..although for more so than CYK to be honest.

Haven't read the full thread but mostly agree with a lot of the recent comments.
I don't think it's a case of Noel being lazy or not wanting to step out of his comfort zone though. I think he is deeply scarred by the 97-00 period where he received extreme backlash to Be Here Now, suffered a massive drug comedown, panic attacks and writers block, tried to mix things up on SOTSOG but was largely met with apathy then went back to the tried and trusted 'Oasis by numbers' route.
I think he saw his long-term rival Damon Albarn lose the war but go on to receive acclaim for changing direction several times and constantly try his hand at new things whilst Noel had pigeon-holed himself into a particular sound and couldn't move away from that whilst with Liam/Oasis. I think he saw going solo as his opportunity to try new things and do what he wanted to do and gets extremely carried away when he discovers a new sound or new project then backtracks when he realises it isn't up to the standard. I actually really liked WBTM but essentially I think you can trace it back to Noel discovering the band Jungle (who he harped on about for years as if he'd discovered fire for the first time, despite them having relative mainstream success) and wanting to recreate their sound, Noel thinking he'd done something wild that nobody else had done before, eventually realising he hadn't and backtracking but making a bit of an arse of himself in the process.

Be careful what you wish for, Weller has changed styles/directions multiple times over the decades, and a large part of his fan base decides he's "lost it" each time

I'd have been so shocked to hear in 2017, when Noel was in a place of colour and ambition and excitement, just what a puddle of grey his solo career would be reduced to in six years. We have gotten strong tracks in those years but I'd have thought we'd be onto Technicolor Energy Album #3 by now.
He's such a talented man and I should be more more excited by new music from him than I am.

I'd have thought we'd be onto Technicolor Energy Album #3 by now. I mean the bloke is 57 years old and has been dealing with a divorce after 12 years of marriage and 2 kids. The fact he is still on the road and smashing it out of the park every night is enough, I think we can cut him some slack with regards to producing fresh sounding "technicolour energy" new music can't we?

It's more with how much he backtracked after blowing smoke up everyone's rear for two years about his new "direction", "parka monkeys", all that nonsense, just to straight up drop the album and EPs from his new shows. I always expected a retreat but the sheer abandonment of his body of work from 2017-2020 is odd.
