It's a 7 from me, at least after the first two listens.
Weller meets Bacharach played by Ashcroft. I enjoy it as an addition to "The Best Of...", but I'd probably hate it if it was the 1st single from a new "proper" HFB album.

Love the strings and the backing vocals high in the mix. It sounds fresh but the melody of the chorus is 100% Noel. Brilliant.

I don't see how it's wasted exactly. He gave you a beautiful song, perhaps when you least expected it. Be happy.  Of course I am, and it'll be great to ease the wait for a new album with two quality tunes, but I do believe this could've easily been a single for a proper new record Now though, if this is of any indication of the level of his writing right now then we'll be in for a treat Albums (sadly) barely matter anymore to anyone (in a big picture industry way). The song is king. He had the song, people are hungry for new stuff right now, and he certainly wasn't going to hold it because he somehow believes he wouldn't have other songs as good on his next album. I'm sure he believes no such thing. |

I know it's gonna seem almost blasphemous to many, but this sounds as liberating and carefree and some of the early Oasis stuff

7/10 nice song but no wonder it’s throwaway.
Some comparisons here confused me and made me listen to the early oasis songs(no DM and WTS(MG) bc I don’t believe anyone in their right mind would compare this song to their classic songs). Even their stone roses rip offs sound fresher
