I love their first couple of albums
I know they have some good moments like Butterfly House and what not, but I think the real magic of The Coral was the madness and diversity in their music.
Now almost everything just seems like a James Skelly solo record with fairly simple songs he wrote on an acoustic guitar and with a backing band. Quite frankly a lot of it now is very dull, nowhere near as diverse or creative as what made them great.
The two original guitarists left didn't they? That obviously didn't help.

I like Sea of Mirrors. It's a more gentle spaghetti western style album. I do like when the Coral play in the mud more like on The Distance Inbetween. Wish they did that style more often. They could make Sea of Mirrors music in their sleep. Has anyone managed to track down a digital copy of Holy Joeās Coral Island Medicine Show? I know it's physical only.

Just listened to Sea of Mirrors (album) and I like it. Faraway Worlds sounds like Weller's. Songs like Wild Bird is, like Lennon2217 said, a spagetti western sound song. Yet it's a good old The Coral.  The Coral are such underrated, especially outside the UK. What a shame. |

Weirdly thereās a track missing. The website lists track 5 out of 18 as Affiliate, but my CD only has 17 tracks, Affiliate is missing. |

Really digging these albums. The western soundtrack is a new sound for them which I like. And the spoken word bits on the Medicine Show album are shorter and much less irritating when presented as a radio show.

They do nothing for me. Too gimmicky. Maybe if they got their first choice of Cillian Murphy to do them for Coral Island I might feel different. Ironic that they did eventually get him 3 years later for Sea of Mirrors. |

They did this for Coral Island as well so I was half expecting it but pre-ordered to get the Holy Joe... CD. Seems like all bands are going this now (Noel, Liam, Blur etc.) so like you say Mossy, best to avoid pre-ordering if there's nothing specific on offer and wait for release week. Likely to be cheaper and with more tracks!
I'm really enjoying both albums - The Coral are such a consistently great band.
