"Gun" (verse) doesn't walk down at all. It starts with G, then E, then G, then A, I believe (coming from a guy who doesn't read music) then ends on E.
Whatever has a C in there and it ends on D, I believe. Very different.

"If I Had A Gun" is far from being the best song Noel has ever written but it does have a melody (better than Chinatown and than quite some NGHFB songs). Not amazing but it's here.
I don't see that much the comparison between IHAG and Whatever melodies. Not only Whatever is miles better in every way, its melody is way more exhuberant than IIHAG's one.

The most overrated and over hyped Oasis/Gallagher songs of all time:
1) stop the clocks (oasis and Noel versions) 2) record machine (oasis and Noel versions) 3) Show Me Your Love (12 seconds of glory not enough folks) 4) If I Had A Gun 5) don't believe the truth (an album yes but way over hyped)

Love it. At first I wasn't keen - but it is clear that a talented pop songwriter rote it. Liam's voice suits it, it is a lovely little nonsensical ballad. It's pretty much the opposite of any Liam song ever. Love it. And with it coming right after two pretty heavy, dirty rockers, in the album listings, it's a perfect bit of relief. Very, VERY excited for this album, now. (You know I'm excited because I think this is my first sensible post since Beady Eye split)

WTF? No, they are not "almost carbon copies". LOL... Obviously, you don't play guitar...because they are. They're literally almost the exact same progressions. I "obviously" do play guitar, and also the trumpet (the latter professionally for a while). I also sing. My brother was also a professional jazz pianist once upon a time. I can read and write notes (or at least I could a few years ago). Your comment is the least "correct" one I've ever read on this forum. The melody of "If I had a gun" is NOT similar to "Whatever", and thank **** for that. Whatever is a great, great song. "If I had a gun", on the other hand, sounds like something written by children in a school yard to bully someone (in my humble opinion). A few notes repeating themselves over and over. Sing the verse of "If I had a gun" a cappella to yourself and you will probably notice. Then sing "Whatever". Sorry for my english.

I gave it 5/10. I'd give the remix a strong 7/10.

I agree with the way you define the melody but I disagree on your conclusion. The way you talk about IIHAG melody makes me think more of songs like Bring The Light, Put Yer Money..., The Meaning of Soul, or even, SCYHO verses. Strips down "Chinatown" and there isn't much to it and probably less than If Had A Gun. But maybe you and some others will disagree.

In the hands of a great producer, If I Had a Gun could have been a fucking gorgeous song. Ballads can always go two ways.

Songbird and Better Man were on the same album. One is soft and brilliant. The other generic and boring.

SOTSOG needed a few more rockers. It definitely should have been played on the SOTSOG tour.

But at least to me, Chinatown has a quite beautiful melody. Not very advanced, not spectacular or very unique, but quite nice. A bit repetitive maybe, but not too bad. I like the melody of Chinatown.

It seems as if Chinatown is VERY popular, among both Oasis and non-Oasis fans. Great!

I miss the old Guigs vs Andy debates. Is there a debate over this? Clearly Guigs was the soul of Oasis. I mean... look what happened when he left?

I agree on Show Me Your Love, and If I had A Gun is a flat recording. Don't Believe The truth is a solid record... especially when compared to the albums surrounding it. I would add Let's All Make Believe to this list. Personally, I like the song, but it gets spoken about on here as though it would have been the saving grace on SOTSOG... which is simply not true. An average Oasis song would not save SOTSOG from it's drivel. ----- On that thought... what is an average Oasis song? (Guess it's time to do some research.)... After finding the compiled numbers of forum members rankings with regards to the first three albums, I'd say an average Oasis song would be something like this: Headshrinker I Hope, I Think, I Know Talk Tonight My Big Mouth Sad Song D’Yer Wanna Be A Spaceman? Rockin’ Chair Married With Children Stay Young It’s Getting Better (Man!!) She’s Electric For more context... the average Oasis single would fall somewhere between Morning Glory and Stand By Me. This information is pretty well useless, so do with it what you'd like.

That cheesy mellotron into is cringe worthy. The guitar solo is cool but then again it's not even Noel playing it. Just his studio tech. Rock n roll! I still find DBTT overrated. Loved it at the time 2005-2008 but it's begun to feel dated. I think HC weaknesses makes us all over value DBTT. In 2017 I only really still listen to half the record. I fucking love Headshrinker. One of the most unique songs like Oasis catalog.
