The greatest record sleeves – as chosen by the designerswww.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2016/sep/22/the-greatest-record-sleeves-as-chosen-by-the-designers?CMP=fb_gu#comment-83833327Chosen by Alison Fielding, Beggars Banquet Group creative director, who has designed for the Prodigy, the Specials and the Horrors
When I was about 13, I heard I Will Follow when I was listening to the John Peel show on headphones. I thought it was amazing, and immediately went to this little local shop that sold TVs as well as records, and ordered it. At that point, I had no idea what it would look like. When I got it, I just thought it was so beautiful, I stared at it for hours. I don’t care much for the graphics, but it’s very evocative of a time in my life that shaped my love of music, and there’s something almost Mona Lisa-like about the photograph on the sleeve. Does it capture innocence, or something darker? They used the same boy two albums later for War, by which point he has a split lip. So there’s a narrative developing. When I was about 13 or 14, I had this big blue Adidas bag for school, and I wrote “U2” on it in really big lettering in ballpoint pen, but messily and badly. That was my first attempt at graphics.

September 2014 was Songs of Innocence. 2 years, U2 have always long breaks since All That You Can't Leave Behind. They shouldn't have said in 2014 that they had another album ready.

But they always do shit like that. Same crap happened with No Line On The Horizon. Bono and the boys said their "hip, young record" was going to be released a few months later that fall. That was March 2009. We didn't get the next U2 album until September 2014!

U2 seem to be dying a bit of a sad death I think and i say that as a massive fan who paid a shit load to see them 4x last year all over the world (Vancouver on the 2nd night to Dublin on the last). They're fucking incredible live but they just seem totally crippled by self doubt now and are trying to hard to remain relevant (which they won't ever be again). I'm quite sad about the way they're heading now. Although, I really don't mind The Best Thing, it's quite catchy at least, just release your work and fuck whatever the "young fans" think because they'll never give a fuck about the "rock dinosaurs".

Time for Bono to go solo. A duo with Chris Martin.

No Line on the Horizon is a good album except for Get on Your Boots, Crazy Tonight and Stand up Comedy. Same with Songs of Innocence, it's good except for the singles (I like the like version of Every Breaking Wave but don't like the album version). Sleep Like a Baby Tonight, The Troubles and Raised by Wolves are all really good songs.

On other news there's a strong chance of at least a single dropping before the end of the year. I just have a feeling.

Latest update from Adam Clayton, from a RTE interview. This album is a JOKENot surprised at all. They do this shit after every release. Promise a quick, poppy follow up that doesn't materialize for 5-6 years. That's ok though, just don't fucking talk it up a storm then.

Lennon2217I'd like to personally remind you that today is not the day to dabate U2... it's Be Here Now Day! Kindly return yourself to the proper threads for this occasion and partake of the madness. Good day, sir.

I wonder if doing something like Zooropa scared them of releasing two albums in one big touring schedule...

I wonder if doing something like Zooropa scared them of releasing two albums in one big touring schedule... They don't have the bravery and risk taking like two decades ago to do that sadly. Their spontaneity has been replaced by an overt self consciousness for chart success, which has crippled their creativity. Bono and co have to realise that to create great music you have to be 110% dedicated to it. Their curiosity has vanished and perhaps rather than slumming it with world leaders on the big stage to 'tackle' poverty* and merely attending studio session for a couple of weeks every month or so, they ought to return to music full time and direct all their passions into it once again. But who knows, maybe they're just not as passionate as they once were? While I don't think they make bad music, it's at a stage where it becomes listenable but unexceptional (or unlistenable with atrocious songs like Song For Someone). It's fine for the majority of bands (e.g. Coldplay and Kasabian would kill to have an album as good as Songs of Innocence), but for a band that have scaled the creative heights of U2 then it will always be a relative disappointment. Every album has fragments of genius peppered around it that suggests there's still something there (I love Sleep Like A Baby Tonight and The Troubles) but as I've said before, if they're just going to act like a part time band, then they'll just sound like a part time band. * NOTE: I don't have an issue with people tackling world poverty, but I've read of initiatives that are way more effective than what Bono does.
