I wish U2 would release material more often. In the nearly two decades since Pop they've released only 4 albums. Not only would a tighter release schedule allow for more spontaneous sessions with possibly better output before the band panics and wonders how they're gonna get that no. 1 hit, it'd also take a bit of the burden of hype off of their shoulders. We waited half a decade after No Line, first for its twin, Songs of Ascent, which was binned, and then we got Songs of Innocence. Maybe albums like HTDAAB and SOI would be better received if we hadn't waited so long for them.
In addition, I strongly suspect that U2 has some great songs hidden in the vault that didn't make the cut for unknown reasons. Just look at Mercy, one of the best things to come out of the Atomic Bomb sessions, removed at the last minute from the album. These guys have still got it, they have the talent to create another masterpiece, yet because they still have that desire to be massive (and understandably so, they weren't called The Biggest Band in the World for no reason), their talent goes to waste. Their 90's output was amazing because they didn't give a fuck about what anyone thought.
Please Bono, Edge, Larry, Adam, Songs of Experience is a chance for you to rescue yourselves from self-parody and restore your reputations. Create another classic that we'll still remember in 20 years. You've done it, not once, but twice before, and you can do it again.

Like someone said earlier, U2 using multiple producers on all these recent LPs pulls their creative output into too many directions. Mostly with negative results. They need a clear vision. One direction. Stop trying to be liked by EVERYONE. Because you won't be. Even at their heights of highs (1987, 1991) they still weren't loved by all and thats ok.

I don't think U2's going to be 'that' great again. I think Songs of Innocence was ok and miles ahead of NLOTH, but of course not groundbreaking.

We are still waiting for that quick followup album U2! September 2014 was a long time ago. They're busy getting in their 20th producer because they're crippled with self doubt. Then they'll ask Chris Martin for advice on whether they should release it or not, then Bono has his annual summer holiday in France with Noel. Expect it sometime in 2018.

Self doubt is inevitable when you become as famous as U2. You know that you will never again be able to reach the heights that you once reached.
It's eloquently said in the song 'Hard To Be The Bard'...
SHAKESPEARE: "It's Hard to alleviate the pressure to create, It's Hard to do something as good as the last thing I did that was already great"

It's amazing how a band that confident in a live setting can be huge pussy farts in the studio. They're up there with Noel levels of self-consciousness leading to very safe albums. They're both in the same situation - they won't have any more radio hits and their more, dare I say, experimental output has been far far superior. "You went too Noel man. Never go full Noel."

First things first - don't go all crappy Apple release. Not cool. But mark my words, that will happen.
Secondly, do we really need another rocker as an opening single? They've been shite at rock this last decade plus. The Miracle is not a great tune at all, it's one of the naff songs off the last album - and that guitar sounds like a MIDI sounding plastic child's play thing. Get On Your Boots - don't even mention it. Vertigo - fun tune at first but has as much novelty value as Roll With It. Not really befitting of a band that released The Fly (their last truly great rock song).
Surprise me. Give us something less cliched and less cheesy.

Somebody on the net has hinted that a new single called Tightrope could be released on Monday.
I smell bullshit but we'll see.

Apple keynote today. So I'm expecting a free U2 album or single by mid afternoon.
* I'm kidding but maybe I'm not. This band ever fails to disappoint.

I think Mercy is a horrible song. They had a song called Glastonbury what became Volcano. While Glastonbury was a great song (played it on the 360 tour, Volcano sounds like the little brother of Ain't Got Nothing)

A proper versions would've been great.

I've always wanted this version of "Winter" to be properly released.

I think Mercy is a horrible song. They had a song called Glastonbury what became Volcano. While Glastonbury was a great song (played it on the 360 tour, Volcano sounds like the little brother of Ain't Got Nothing) I don't think it's horrible but it is very U2 by numbers and not interesting in any way. Glastonbury is okay - I can see why you prefer it to Volcano which just sounds forced in its attempt to give off that big chorus. Far too self conscious for its own good whereas Glastonbury has a spontaneity and loose feel to it that just gives it a more natural honest feel. To be honest, I just think U2 aren't any good with rockers these days - they just sound naff. The last good one was The Fly which was immense, but they ought to stick to the more contemplative ethereal songs which I feel they've still got a lot to offer with. Personally, that's what draws me to U2 - while they offered spiky punk tunes earlier in their career, it always had an underlying celtic melancholy to it. Even the most electronic fused moments in their career had an undercurrent bleakness to it that complemented the cold feel of the industrial and electronic sounds they would dabble in. You undoubtedly lose that when they ape other bands and the lyrics start becoming uninspired non-sensical tripe and the poorer lyrics from Bono of late is an indictment on the band not really knowing what their songs are about. As a result, it all feels a bit aimless, unfocused and ultimately emotionless. When they get it right though - songs like Sleep Like A Baby or The Troubles are Bono's better efforts with lyrics on the album - then it proves they've still got it.

Some interesting rumors from a Spanish U2 fansite: Cheers for the info carlober. Whose producing it - or rather how many people are producing it (the more the worse I fear) - is important here. I think my fears will be confirmed when I see that a whole host of producers have worked on it.

I feel like I've read this same story before every big album release from U2 dating back to "All That You Can't Leave Behind". Literally this has happened at least 2-3 times over the last 16 years of somebody recording Bono playing the album at his beach house.
