Mad how much changing the key can alter the soul of a song. This is SO Radiohead. Utterly fucking depressing. Heavy. Beautiful. Haunting. But it's not quite Coldplay. There's no romance, and a lot more anxiety.

Also, I can't take seriously any Best of U2 list that doesn't have A Sort of Homecoming or Numb on it. The former for its steady, uncertain, ethereal beauty, and the latter for its unnerving, unsettling brilliance.

There's no romance, and a lot more anxiety. It sounds like someone is writing about a lover they lost and how the love that person gave for them still is alive and lingers over them, even though they're gone, and there's anxiety about how they may never find love like that again. Great redux on the song.

Controversial opinion time....... but having just been reading the apparent rivalry between the two bands, I will never understand The Beatles v Stones debate.
It shouldn’t be a rivalry let alone a debate. The Beatles were so far superior, for the quality and frequent beauty of their songs, their emotional depths, innovations, variety, arrangements and vocal harmonies. All this was lacking in The Stones music which was just derivative RnB sung by a technically mediocre singer, albeit with attitude and swagger.
Putting The Stones on a pedestal with The Beatles simply makes them the most overrated band of all time.

The Stones certainly aren't as good as the fab four, but they do have a cool classic swagger to them that doesn't seem to go out of fashion. I quite like them.

But on the other hand, The Beatles, or probably any other band for that matter, never managed to catch the kind of cool swagger the Stones possessed. That's the main thing I love about the Stones, you can hear it in their music and I don't even know how exactly but it just somehow comes through it. It's like hearing the testosterone but in a 100% positive way, which is rare coz I usually associate it to negative things. The Beatles are a better band but for me personally Rolling Stones' best songs are not only better but also something that had the kind of vibe in them that the Beatles never managed to capture. They just make you feel invincible and fill you with confidence. That's probably why I love Oasis so much; they were like a mix of both of those bands and had both the melodies and the swagger. Oh The Escapist already had the same word choice I almost forgot to post this coz just before sending I got in some random argument with my fucking parents and forgot the whole thread.

Putting The Stones on a pedestal with The Beatles simply makes them the most overrated band of all time. The Stones are still good, but Led Zeppelin and even The Who were the better rock bands, had greater depth to their sound and had a more lasting sound, even despite a band like LZ being derivative at times. The difference between LZ and the Stones is that LZ really did something innovative with their sound and songs, even to helping create a genre like metal, while wearing their influences on their sleeves. The Stones were good, straightforward rock and roll, and wrote some good songs, but they were often chasing their contemporaries (see Their Satanic Majesties' Request coming after Sgt. Pepper's) and trends (Miss You coming at the height of disco in the '70s). One thing they did do was help kick start 60s rock and roll (Satisfaction's success and production of course) and diversify the blues to have more of a rock and world music sound (for the latter, see Sympathy for the Devil) while really hitting their stride with a distinct gospel-tinged blues rock sound (Shine a Light, You Can't Always Get What You Want). They're up there with the best, no doubt, but nowhere near The Beatles' insane discography and output.

The current age of music, where Queen's hits are regularly used in commercials & sporting events and DSOTM T-shirts are uber popular along with Bohemian Rhapsody the movie, it makes sense. Not to mention, they push those two bands a lot on classic rock stations that attract a more mainstream audience that hypes them up, while a lot of Beatles music gets relegated to oldies stations and only a few Beatles songs (you can guess them) gets played on variety stations (at least in the States). Astonishingly enough, I've met some people that think Freddie Mercury is just Queen and some people that wear the DSOTM T-shirt but don't realize what it represents.

I don't deny they were a very important band but they are nowhere near The Beatles. Every Beatles v Stone debates inevitably ends in The Beatles winning so I wonder why it's even a debate! The Stones have style in abundance that comes through their songs but their whole thing is just style over substance. It's also not really a winning factor over The Beatles for me as I prefer The Beatles style over The Rolling Stones! I feel The Beatles were more authentic in their charm and charisma than The Stones, I could listen all day to The Beatles wit over any Rolling Stones interview.

Ok I think Queen are a little overrated but it's got to be said they're one of the best live stadium bands and best singles bands of all time. For many people a Queen greatest hits LP would stand up there with pretty much anyone. It's really a very accessible package that has obviously given them a hell of a lot of airtime and in turn a hell of a lot of fans. Now how much depth they have beyond this is obviously questionable. That said they've still got fucking loads going for them. Likely the highest rated front man of all time. An identifiable iconic lead guitarist. A song often touted as the best of all time. One of the best loved collaborations of all time. Iconic bass lines. Probably the most identifiable drum beat of all time... Queen have more than earned their classic status.

I think you hit the nail to the head here, that Stones cool swagger is what made them awesome. Personaly I prefer The Stones too, you describe them very well, that swagger made you feel invencible and full of confidence pretty much like Oasis, and that is something The Beatles lacks imo, The Beatles rockers they don't have that menace dangerous feeling, maybe with the exception of Come Togheter, but I have to say I love Beatles balladas and psychedelic slow tempos songs, also some Beatles songs I can't stand anymore like Yellow Submarine, Help, Taxman, Sgt. Peppers... Anyway I will say if I want ballads and slow tempo songs I'll go fo The Beatles, but if I want rockers full of swagger and confidence I much prefer The Stones.

Beatles never made songs like these, and that is a big part of why I prefer the Stones. Maybe not the better band, but the better rock band without a doubt.

I was on what I would describe as a pretty open minded indie forum the other week and I was a little amazed to see how so many individuals completely abhorred Pink Floyd. To them they (and prog rock as a whole) embodied everything wrong with rock music and in turn the band should be thrown into the eternal fiery pits of hell. From a forum which has some of the more thoughtful discussions I've read it was disappointing to see the old "they're music for dads" argument come up with such frequency. Lame. 'Dark Side of the Moon'/'Wish You Were Here'/'Animals'/'The Wall' was one of the best runs in music and anyone who says otherwise is missing out.

In the 70s they were behind the Led Zeppelin behemoth who sold records in the boat loads and did world tours of outdoor stadiums. It really was t until the very very late 70s when both the Beatles and Zeppelin gone did the Stones finally lay claim to biggest rock act.

I'm sure many people here are familiar with DJ Shadow and Endtroducing... and the sampling stuff he did. Not that long ago I found out this is one of the samples he used on the album, and especially on Midnight In A Perfect World which has always been my favourite song by him. It surprised me because it's by this Finnish Jazz-fusion artist from the 70's and I guess I just never expected him to use some obscure foreign music from my own country. Anyway, I was talking about this with my dad today and it turns out he actually has that same Pekka Pohjola album on vinyl, original pressing in a near mint condition! It was a bit surprising because those vinyl prices are quite high these days probably because of DJ Shadow and it was cool to see my dad having some rarer stuff like that, and how DJ Shadow literally used that same record for making his record. I remember I showed you that Pekka Pohjola song back when I found out about it so I'll tag you again mystoryisgory EDIT. It seems Tears For Fears also used it!

The reason DJ Shadow used a bunch of obscure foreign music is because he literally had no other choice haha. He had to otherwise he'd either be forced to pay outrageous sample clearances to huge music corporations or sued into bankruptcy by them. Sad but that's just capitalism for you.
Also, I've heard Sowing the Seeds of Love and Midnight in a Perfect World millions of times and never noticed the similarities! Just had my mind blown here! And it looks like this little snatching of a riff went uncredited too. It's not on whosampled and only Tears for Fears are listed as songwriters.
