Jim , guigsysEstring , do you guys happen to know why the Japanese single for Some Might Say was the only dynamically sound master released in the CD format compared to the other ones for the MG era? Why didn't the other Japanese singles get this treatment? I’ve not got a clue, definitely one for davidjay ! Hi guys. Sorry, only just seen this question! As I recall, the Japanese CD single for Some Might Say wasn't treated any differently - it reuses the exact same digital master as the UK CD single, which was mastered at Abbey Road before work on the Morning Glory album was complete. It does retain a lot more dynamics than the final album master. The EQ is also different; to me the single has brighter top end but is a bit "thin" sounding - whereas the album mastering has more low end and is, of course, massively louder and more compressed. Owen Morris has said he thought the Abbey Road mastering of Some Might Say sounded terrible, and that he much preferred his mastering for the album (quoted here: www.oasis-recordinginfo.co.uk/?page_id=1645 ). Something similar went on with Supersonic - the UK CD single was mastered at Abbey Road, and the dynamics breathe more than on the album. To me the difference isn't quite as apparent as with Some Might Say, though.

I'm quite shocked it's been that long. In all honesty I've had a lot going on work and family wise, and less free time as a result. I can't remember if I said about this before on here, but my mum is very ill with scleroderma. A horrible autoimmune disease; thankfully she is getting the right treatment from a dedicated team, which helps to manage the symptoms. This BBC news article gives some info on the disease. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-berkshire-41034822With all that's happening I'm not sure I can contribute regularly here anymore. The main thing I always wondered with Owen was he mastered WTSMG himself but A Northern Soul was third party mastered by Masterdisk. Probably had to do with the immense turmoil during those sessions with the Verve and wanted to be just done with the album. The Abbey Road master doesn't sound that thin to me, and I love how much punchier it is. Wish you all the best with your family. I understand caring for a sick parent, it's rough.

Feel like Fade Away is a bit underrated on this forum tbh. 😳 The original and demo are great. I loved the warchild version until Noel sapped the absolute life out of it live by continuously playing it like When Im Sixty Four or something. That and Listen Up became so boring.

I'm wondering if there's a proper release of Within you without you... I think it was released on an NME or Mojo-curated CD of "Sgt. Pepper" covered by various bands/artists, so the CD might have been a covermount. I have to admit I didn't pay much attention to that at the time, didn't attempt to get a physical copy of the thing as I was so disappointed Liam chose that song when they could've done "A day in the life" instead.

I like the WYWY cover, it was very unexpected as I was sure it would be a slow Noel solo version like the acoustic WFL version. Which is still fine but it was a surprise to hear Liam sing it with the full band.

Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher talks about covering the Beatles, and why there will never be another band like them.
Oasis have recorded a version of the Beatle's Within You Without You to celebrate 40 years since the release of Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
They were among a number of bands - including Razorlight, Kaiser Chiefs, Bryan Adams and The Magic Numbers - who recorded contemporary version of songs from the iconic 1967 album.
Gallagher - who also turned 40 this year - said it was an album close to his heart.
'Floaty and dreamy'
"Sgt Pepper is special for me because I was born on the 29 May, and it came out on the 1 June," he said.
"So when I was being born in St Mary's Hospital, Manchester, it was being played on hospital radio.
He added: "Because the songs are not rocking or having it, it's very floaty and dreamy, I think the older you get the more you appreciate it.
"And it still contains some of the greatest Beatles songs like A Day in the Life, and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds."
Gallagher said his brother Liam chose to do their own version of the George Harrison solo Within You, Without You.
"When we were approached, I wasn't overly enthusiastic. I was thinking it was a bit pointless going there to copy the Beatles because it was never going to be as good.
The Beatles were of their time... you can't compare a band from today with one from the 1960s
Noel Gallagher
"But I said if Liam wants to do it, I'll do it, so he was up for it and decided he was going to pick the song.
"I just assumed he would say A Day In The Life, but he came back with Within You Without You , and I was like 'what? There's no guitars on it!'
"There's nothing on it apart from singing and an Indian orchestra, but he said 'I can hear it in my head', and I said okay, brilliant.'"
Gallagher said the band was inspired by the Beatle's soundtrack compilation album Love, when it came to recording the song.
"The one good bit on the Love album, is a bit where they briefly cross Tomorrow Never and Always with Within You, Without You, so we said if we are going to do it, lets do it like that, because that sounds really exciting, and it also means we can all play on it."
While Geoff Emerick - the engineer in charge of the original 1967 sessions - used the same equipment to record the new versions, Gallagher says only Oasis got to use the original desk.
"We - maybe arrogantly on my behalf - said if we are going to do it we want to do it at Abbey Road, with the actual equipment or we are not interested," he said.
The Kaiser Chiefs
Gallagher said he was 'embarrassed' for The Kaiser Chiefs
"The BBC bent over backwards and managed to book a couple of days in the studio.
"The desk was in Lenny Kravitz studio, and somehow they managed to convince him it would be a good idea to rip it out, ship it to England, let us work on it, and ship it back again."
Razorlight performed the track With A Little Help From My Friends, The Fray covered Fixing A Hole with the Magic Numbers playing She's Leaving Home.
Getting Better was sung by the Kaiser Chiefs.
Gallagher said the bands taking part in the recordings and working on the original equipment had a number of challenges to face.
"Number one - you've all got to be able to play in the same room together," he said.
"I was watching Kaiser Chiefs and Razorlight on the documentary and with the greatest respect to those two bands, it was embarrassing. I was embarrassed for them.
"Luckily for us we grew learning to play together in the same room, so we didn't do a great many takes. I think we got it on the sixth."
New album
Gallagher said it was impossible to compare the bands of today with the Beatles.
"You can only be of your time," he said.
"The Beatles were of their time... you can't compare a bad from today with one from the 1960s. Music doesn't mean as much today as it did in the 1960s.
"That's why there will never be another Beatles."
Gallagher added that Oasis were due to start recording their seventh studio album on 3 July.
"The songs are written... but don't hold your breath because the last album took three-and-half-years and three goes!
"It would be great if it was done by the end of the year and we could get out on the road by next summer, but that's insane wishful thinking."
Noel Gallagher was talking to the BBC's Colin Paterson.
Sgt Pepper's 40th Anniversary is on BBC Radio 2 at 2000 on Saturday 16 June.

Whenever I see people arguing about the brothers, raging about Noel's direction or Liam's songwriting credits I feel very glad to be able to enjoy the releases of both of them.
I think people don't realize how lucky we are for getting all these new music 10 years after Oasis broke up.

I think people don't realize how lucky we are for getting all these new music 10 years after Oasis broke up. I'm 100% with you on this, and I think people are extra hard on Noel's new music, especially since it is a bit different, which is highly, highly ironic given how much some fans were clamoring for Noel to do something different and now that he is, those same people are panning it hard and praising Liam's music which is more in the style of Oasis. Moral of the story, you can't please people completely and we just gotta enjoy what we're getting because it's pretty awesome. Noel's got some exciting & different, new stuff that's good and Liam's got some exciting new stuff that's also good. Altogether, the spirit of Oasis is still alive and well.

"Full on" is one of my favorite Noel vocal Oasis songs. And a pretty great song in general! Everyone wants a Liam-sung Record Machine or Liam-sung Stop the Clocks but what would've been great is a Liam-sung Full On. That would've been a banger. Great tune that's a lot of fun, in an era that didn't have as much of that, with a fine guitar solo too. It should've definitely gotten Liam vocals and been on SOTSOG instead of Put Yer Money...
