Facebook Official, @beherenowisbiblical
Today, as I posted my 21,221st post on the Oasis forum inside the past decade, I thought "Hey, maybe I should try dating?" Then I looked in the mirror whilst listening to The Masterplan compilation and thought "There's a point I want to argue in the WTSMG or BHN Thread," and promptly forgot about building a family life, and returned to the forum once more. #priorities

Headshrinker came on my phone on shuffle and completely blew me away. I mean, I've always thought it was a great tune, but fuck me, it is perhaps the most mad, savage, out of control rocker ever produced by Gallagher & Co.

Studio version is a bit poor.
Love the live versions though.

The studio version is fine, I like it. Still my least favourite on the Masterplan (without counting the Swamp Song and I'm The walrus), which says a lot about the greatness of this compilation

If it was on MG it would stick out like a sore thumb. Doesn't fit at all. Never deserved to be anything more than a B-Side.

It is indeed! Guaranteed to get you a speeding ticket when played in car, neighbours banging on wall when played in house and the best way to start a night out! Love it!

I played with that violonist (she is a truly amazing player) three times before today, and I played all the usual suspects to suit with a violin : Wonderwall, Whatever, Champagne Supernova, Slide Away, The Masterplan, Underneath The Sky, etc. So today I was like "let's be original !" and Cigarettes and Alcohol sounded epic.

"Sonically, 'Listen Up' offers another textbook example of the shoegaze/grunge synthesis. The song begins with the (by-now classic) McCarroll hip-hop drum intro before plunging into a swirl of power chords and phaser-smothered guitar overdubs. There is a desperate, bleak quality to the whole of 'Listen Up', which has the feel of a garage band struggling - and succeeding - to create a sound of panoramic grandeur and soul. But the most striking moment in the song occurs in the bridge section where, over a descending chord sequence, Liam Gallagher howls a sudden, stabbing lyrical fragment that imagines a day when he can leave everyone behind once and for all." (From Alex Niven's book on Definitely Maybe)
Listen Up is awesome. It's one of those songs that gives you the same great feeling, with each listen, as when the brilliance of the song first occurred in your mind. It's slowly crept into my top 10, but I think it has a solid spot in it after a good listening session on Sunday. The loud production really works on this song, and the way it's such a hazy mess makes everything a lot better with how you can get lost in those sweet-sounding guitars that swirl throughout the whole song. Yeah I really like that slightly hazy sound that Owen Morris captured in Listen Up too; it's very densely layered and heavily compressed, with the tambourine, lead guitar, and vocal projecting cleanly over the top. Sonically very close to Definitely Maybe. There's also a distinctive effect on Liam's brilliant vocal (in the choruses) which sounds to me a bit like a tremolo effect from a Leslie speaker. Not sure exactly what it is, but it can be heard best when he sings "home" in the line "I've been trying to find my way back home." There's a similar effect on his vocal for Underneath the Sky, recorded and mixed a year later at Maison Rouge studios. In both cases it seems to me to lend the track a slightly more psychedelic feel, as well as emphasising the plaintive quality of Liam's delivery.

Does anyone else think Stand By Me, Don't Go Away, Stay Young, The Girl In The Dirty Shirt and (to a slightly lesser extent) All Around The World are all lame or is it just me? Occasionally I'll hear someone take a shot at one or two of them but I don't recall anyone else not caring for the full set.

Just listening to the b-sides and bonus tracks, skipping all album tracks is a great experience.
