I don't even really know the dynamic involved in Radiohead writing songs. I imagine Thom comes in with the basic chords/melody and lyrics, and then the everyone else adds texture, especially Jonny and Phil, who are amazing musicians.
so, what I'm trying to say is maybe people don't like Radiohead's music or politics or what have you but Radiohead are really talented as a whole.
God bless.

6 years ago if you told me that an Oasis album (reissue or whatever) would beat a Yorke rating on Pitchfork I wouldn't have believed it. They got both reviews spot on this week. This is Yorke's most bland work yet. I think a 6 is a little generous to be honest. Faceless kinda MOR electronica as far as I'm concerned. His side projects and solo work are very hit and miss. Won't start worrying about him unless Radiohead make another disappointing album, which let's be honest probably won't happen. Kinda interesting to see that Yorke needs his bandmates a little more than Damon or Noel does at this point. He seems a little lost without them, kind of maunders around without them there to focus him. Damon is a master collaborator, that is his gift and niche. Noel like Yorke is playing it a little safe with regards to his music and sound but the difference is Noel is consistently writing good to great material. I respect Yorke for being brave enough to release his passion side projects. He could easily just sit on this material and never release this IDM album. We all know this type of album isn't for everyone but he puts it out anyways. Noel could learn something from that (i.e. AA sessions). Noel pussyfoots around too much. Guys like Albarn and Yorke do not. Indeed Yorke has more courage and is more prolific. Noel is the safest of the three in terms of releases and sound. Kinda of a shame. He might be the most consistent one though. He is steady for better or for worse, which also means that he rarely reaches the creative highs that Damon or Yorke achieve on occasion.

There must be hundreds of musicians involved with that project, giving it away for free would mean all those involved get nothing. Also, Noel said he would never release free music, honestly saying he expects something in return! I respect that stance. He admits he's spent a lot of money on the AA project, so is intent on releasing it due to this matter. But I think he may recoup his losses with the next album rather than releasing it sadly. That said, I don't like artists releasing music for the sake of it - I'd much rather have Noel pussyfoot around for 5-7 years and then release a fully decent follow up to Be Here Now. This Yorke album doesn't warrant repeat listening if I'm honest - its proof that experimentation can be bland and dull, and its not much of a move away from the stuff he's been doing the last few years - I mean, it's hardly Gorillaz? I'd rather all his efforts go into a great Radiohead album, but I still think he hasn't released anything of note for seven years. I'm not a fan of his individual work personally, makes me realise Radiohead is greater than the sum of all parts.

Well I mean that is the beauty of this free society, if you don't want to listen to it, you don't have to download it. Thom isn't giving this away for free, just $6. I feel in this day and age I'd rather hear what some of my favorite artists are up to then go 2-3 years with no content. Let's face it, Noel is almost 50. Time is a wasting.

Kinda makes sense. When I heard Spooks on the 2006 tour it had a surfer/pulp fiction vibe to it which fits the subject manner of Inherent Vice. Can't wait to hear the final version.

Id like to echo what Cast and Matt have said. It's great that he's putting these songs out there but this is getting boring now, he can do so much better than this. Almost everything I've heard from Radiohead after In Rainbows just sounds so hollow and bleepy to almost cover up for a lack of songwriting quality. The pitchfork rating tells you all you need to know. Dust off the guitar and give us more There There/Jigsaw Falling into Place/2+2=5 type stuff, That's what they do best. Emotive, experimental, layered, beautiful alt rock.

All that matters to me are the Radiohead albums.

I hope this song will one day make a Radiohead album. Can't believe they have been sitting on this song since 2000. Add it to the very long list of songs that never appeared on an album from this band.

Not sure how I feel about Radiohead these days,
Back in 2002-3ish they were my joint favourite band with Oasis and OK Computer is still in my top 5 albums of all time,
But something has changed recently where I don't get that excited by any news and in some respects I forget they're still around,
It took me almost a year to by KOL which would seem absurd to the 17 year old version of me who rushed down to the shops at 9am in 2003 to buy HTTT and then take the whole day off college to listen to it!
I quite liked HTTT and In Rainbows was a great album so it's nothing on the music front, I really can't place where my love for this band has gone,
They're still great though

The good news is the band was in the studio at the start of September. Thom confirmed that when doing his mystery tweets for Tomorrow's Modern Boxes. It'll probably be a solid 10 months to a year before anything is heard of from these sessions. On the flip side, this band is always full of surprises so I wouldn't be shocked if a full 10 track album came out randomly this morning.

They have epic gaps between releases. There was a 4 year span between Hail To The Thief and In Rainbows. Then over 3 years before King of Limbs came out. Currently we are in a 4 year wait for their next album. I blame this on the band members all being 40+, having families (a good thing) and having side projects. They literally all have something big going on outside Ed. Thom has a side band and solo albums. Jonny is a successful film score composer (There Will Be Blood, The Master and Inherent Vice), Phil has 2 solo albums since King of Limbs and Colin does charity work in Africa and other nations. Busy times for the band between Radiohead projects. I rank their works like this since 2000, when I bought Kid A in college as a freshman. Kid A - Excellent Amnesiac - Good Hail To The Thief - Slightly above average. Very uneven. The band admits they rushed it and the track listing by making it too long. However, There There might be the best song they've done in 15 years. Amazing tune. In Rainbows - Excellent The King of Limbs - Above average but too short. Bloom and Separator are gorgeous.

Yeah you might be right, also I wasn't keen on KOL at all so really it's been 7 years since they've done anything I'd listen to again Completely agree on HTTT. 14 tracks is 2 too many; The Gloaming and A Punchup At A Wedding are b-sides at best for me and removing them makes for a much tighter, efficient album. Tracks such as Where I End and You Begin and There There are all time classic Radiohead tunes I love both Kid A and Amnesiac (I wished Like Spinning Plates was more like the live version) equally and In Rainbows in one of the most beautiful records I own.

Here's how I'd judge their 00's output.
Kid A - A brilliant record. It is one of those rare albums that perfectly describe a moment in time and honestly that's what elevates it even more. It transcends the music (which is also very good but its not my musically favorite Radiohead record). I honestly listening back to it 14 years later it is still haunting. The millennium couldn't have opened with a better record.
Amnesiac - It has some really good moments (Pyramid Song and I Might Be Wrong are two of their all time highlights). It just gets boring after a while. I like how it sounds but some of the songs just don't stick with me over long periods of time. I'll play the album once a year and then it'll just sit on the shelf (besides the highlights).
Hail to the Thief - Their BHN. Some completely unnecessary stuff on here, though I don't think A Punchup at a Wedding is one of them (That bass!). It is a really bloated record. We Suck Young Blood, and I Will is Thom Yorke at his worse in my opinion. When the songs are good it is a really good, close to being great. 2 + 2 = 5, Where I End and You Begin, Sail to the Moon, Scatterbrain, and A Wolf At the Door are all great songs. A Wolf At the Door is probably their most underrated closer. There There is one of my favorite Radiohead songs.
In Rainbows - Another brilliant record. Probably my second favorite Radiohead record. It showcases everything that they are good at. This would be the album that I would give to people if they wanted to get into them. The two weakest songs Faust Arp and Videotape aren't terrible and the rest shine so bright.
The King of Limbs - Disappointing to say the least. Half of it is really good but when there's just 8 songs on an album thats not too good of a ratio. Codex is one of their most beautiful songs. Lotus Flower, Bloom, Separator are all great. The rest I'm not really that fussed about. Feral is really really shit.
Rankings
In Rainbows - 9.5/10 Kid A - 9/10 Hail to the Thief - 6.5/10 Amnesiac - 6/10 The King of Limbs - 6/10

I picked up Hail to the Thief today....haven't listened to it yet. Couple months back I got In Rainbows, probably my third favorite Radiohead album behind OK Compiter and The Bends.
I have Kid A lying around some where in a stack of cd's, probably give that a listen again soon since I'm back on the Radiohead train.
God bless.

Sure it's not an amazing song or anything but it fits on that album perfectly. I know a lot of people shit on the song "The Gloaming" but it's another tune off that album I really enjoy. The highs on HTTT are really fucking high.
