Thank you very much again, Sternumman and matt. You both opened my ears for discovering Springsteen. I've just lisetened to "Thunder Road" live from Hammersmith Odeon and I really like it. I want to get to know more about his early years, but first I should start with 2 albums you both recommended. and "Because The Night" with Michael Stipe is as great as Patti's! On side note, I just bought my ticket for Patti's acoustic gig in an open air park in August. Really looking forward to it. There's always good music if you open your eyes and ears. Music is just like air and water for me. |

Music is just like air and water for me. NP Thunder Road is the opening song to his third album Born to Run. On record its with a full band but for that tour he usually opened with it just w/ the piano. |

Springsteen's autobiography is out in September. Will be fascinating considering he is very private.
Also, Johnny Marr's autobiography will be released in the same month! Great month all round for the music bios!!

I finally listened to Nebraska today and I thank you and matt for recommending this album because I absolute love it. This album changed my view and thought about Springsteen. I really like "Atlantic City", "Highway Patroolman", "State Trooper", "Reason To Believe" and "Mansion on The Hill" of course! I'll be honest, I wouldn't go to see him in a huge stadium, but I'm enjoying every song on this album. To me he's no longer the man with a huge American flag, but the artist that I see similar to Billy Bragg. Next one is "The Darkness on the Edge of Town", then I'd like to listen to the album "River" too. |

It was his first number one album and had his first top ten song, Hungry Heart which he wrote for the Ramones, so when he released Nebraska after it was a big surprise. |

He's done three acoustic albums - Nebraska, Ghost of Tom Joad and Devils and Dust from 2005. All similar in mood, but Nebraska remains the defining acoustic album of his. I suspect he's making an acoustic album for his next album as the E Street Band are reportedly not involved, hence why he is doing the River anniversary tour as a way to give fans the chance to see them before the next album. |

Sternumman matt, I listened to "The Darkness on the Edge of Town" last night. Although I love the darkness of "Nebraska", this album taught me an another artistic side of Springsteen. I like "Adam Raised A Cain", "Racing In The Street" and the title song. I'm glad you liked some of it. It's my favorite album of all time. I'd say the closest album to it in sound is Born to Run. That album is just more produced and romantic. Darkness was made after a long three year battle with his manager fighting over his contract were he wasn't allowed to record. So tonally it's a lot bleaker. Some of its hard to make it though. If you do listen to it again I'd recommend pulling up the lyrics. The title track gets my every time. It's one of my favorite songs ever. Adam Raised A Cain kicks ass. It's almost punk. Candys Room is my other favorite from that album. Racing in the Streets is regarded as one of his best songs. There is an alternate version he released a few years ago from a boxset that I prefer but some people think is blasphemous. Prove It All Night on the record doesn't have the punch as it did live but I also think it's one of the best songs on the record. The live version piano ntro was used as the melody for Patti Smiths Frederick the following year. |

There is definitely anger throughout the album. There is an album that he released a few years ago to coincide with the Darkness anniversary that contains 20 unreleased songs from that session and a lot of them are upbeat. They just didnt fit the tone of the album he was going for. I had never heard Frederick until a couple of weeks ago. I heard another song that used the live version of Prove It All NIght piano intro and the article said Patti Smith used the intro too for Frederick. |
