I won't bother boring everyone here with my own track-by-track review, I'll just say that, as a truly MASSIVE fan, I'm remarkably disappointed by this 45 minute rollercoaster of "uneveness". Certainly, the album has its share of great moments, but they're far outweighed by 4, 5 and even 6 minute (see death and all his friends/escapist) segments of listening that should have come equipped with an alarm clock.
The whole idea of course was that the infusion of Eno would allow the band to "stretch its legs" ....and while there are undoubteldly a myriad of influences here, the end product is largely (and I mean LARGELY) Coldplay by numbers. A sort of a Heathen Chemistry if you will, if not a bit more dramatic.
It's not bad, it's not terribly good.
It's just some above average, average, and below average Coldplay...with more of an emphasis on the latter unfortunately.
What do you guys think?

I think the good moments outweigh the bad ones. Cemeteries Of London, Yes, and Violet Hill are cracking tunes; unfortunately, they're undermined by filler tracks like 42 and Reign Of Love.
I'm definitely getting into the album more listen-by-listen, and as far as I'm concerned there's only one album that's topped it so far this year (The Seldom Seen Kid by Elbow).

I don't understand the shit they did:
1.) Cemeteries of London: The last 12 seconds - nevermind that that sounds like it should be in the computer game The Sims, but it's just fucking pointless and doesn't fit at all.
2.) Lovers of Japan/Reign of Love: Split the two songs. By combing the two, if make it seem like one's not good enough to stand on its own, because if it did it would be filler.
3.) Yes: Again, same problem. WTF are they playing at? The second half doesn't fit with the first.
4.) Death and All His Friends: This problem is REALLY noticed here....the first half is EPIC, then the second half makes no sense stylistically.
Sadly those are the best tracks on the album, and they are good, but ruined by this awful style they went for.
Then you got the god awful songs:
1.) 42: Worst lyrics ever.
2.) Violet Hills: Most irritating song I ever heard in my life. The annoying vocals and the obnoxious beat does my head in
3.) Strawberry Swing: Utter filler. Nice, but just filler
Other songs:
1.) Life In Technicolor: Good music - reminds me of Oasis' I Can See It Now. But an album opener? I question that decision
2.) Viva La Vida: Sounds amazing at first, but gets boring. Doesn't go anyway, and is just cliches strung together. Yawn.
3.) Lost: Pretty good song, no complaints with this one really
This album had potential, but turned out to be average.

I agree on principle; they tried to be too clever in splicing songs together, and you're right, it doesn't work. Thankfully, however, iTunes has granted me the power to split said songs up into their separate entities, and thus this problem has ceased to exist, thereby improving my enjoyment of the album.
I can't honestly criticise Violet Hill, though. I fucking love it.

I'm going to be honest, Weezer's new album is much more enjoyable to listen to then this new Coldplay pish

very average. Very bad by Coldplay standards. The tracks try way to hard to be something else. And the whole two tracks thing is a waste. No real standout songs that make you go "wow thats a classic" (same as XY). There are some good tracks but overall the album doesn't flow at all and the tracks in general don't fit together at all. Also Martin's lyrics are pretty damn bad on this album. I'm not a huge Coldplay fan (first two albums are amazing though) But if i was and waited three years for this i would not be pleased.

Also Martin's lyrics are pretty damn bad on this album. And they stick out like a sore thumb too. It's a very okay album, can't say I like it too much at this point.

as of now i dont know whether i like it more than x&y...there are no real big songs in the vein of fix you etc on it, though Yes is the closest one to that. it's a bit weird in terms of production or mastering i dunno.. violet hill is fucking great though..cant stop listening to it..especially the live version.
the album needs and deserves some more rotations definitely.

Let me qualify myself by saying that I normally dislike everything Coldpay does but I kind of like Violet Hill

Love it or hate it, one thing's almost guaranteed - it'll be more interesting than Oasis' new album.
Let the flaming begin.

To me this record will be the "mission impossible III" of 2008... with a hitch. Couple possibly unattainable expectations, with a budget (or in this case hype and a top producer) to set the scene for a mild"flop" which is done in (unlike M-I III, IMO) further by a product that really isnt even a 7-8 out of 10.
Mission Impossible III was top stuff as far as I'm concerned, btw. Too bad Cruise was on a bad media wave.
This album's missing a lot of something...perhaps 6-7 undeniable melodies.

hell...this could almost be their "Be Here Now" if you think about it! 2-3 great tunes, a couple of decent ones and 6 that are just mistakes in one form or another.
Plus this one has the added pressure of millions of presales that will only piss people off even more!
look out "christ" martin and crew! Although you can be sure the public backlash won't be nearly as harsh as the fall oasis took...for a lot of deserved reasons, btw.

I haven't listened to this yet. X&Y turned me off.. it doesn't sound too promising but I'll still listen to it some time in the next couple of weeks

i like that they went in another direction and after a couple of spins it has grown on me...which is more than I can say for 'x & Y'. The production actually makes it sound like a early u2 record (which I know they want to be)......as opposed to 'x & y' which tried too hard.

listened to it over and over today, i personally think its brilliant, superb moments of melody, brilliantly produced, and i think one that will age better than X & Y (i did enjoy x & y alot, but just feel that often its over cooked, and sounds like a sci fi romance soundtrack but still a very good album in its own right, regardless of hype). I like the direction, and look forward to the tour.
brilliant band, one that has never, to me personally ever dissapointed me, well bar haircuts.
