Can someone make me understand something pretty big about our once unibrowed brothers? What' the deal with Man City and Man Utd. Why did they hate Man Utd back in the day and why were they so vocal about it? I can't think of a concert where they didn't boo'd Man Utd or encouraged the crowd to do so. What's the deal with that? What's the difference between those football clubs? Thanks.

They're rivals. Nuff said. Would have been even worse back in those days as well because City were terrible and United were the big brother with all the money,

Manchester United are the scum of the Earth. You don't need to be a City fan to embrace this basic fact of the universe. Liam and Noel are just regular fellas on the right side of history.

Agreed, fuck United. Although I don't really like City either nowadays due to their oil rich method of getting to the top, but Liam and Noel were fans before that so they get a pass.

It’s just the way football is. Clubs that come from the same city or region always hate each other. Sometimes there are political, religious or economic reasons behind that, just think of Celtic vs Rangers, but most of the time it’s rivalry and pure hatred between clubs without a proper logical explanation.

City fans are generally very small time too. All that anti-United stuff on stage - embarassing. Take The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays - at least half of each respective band are bigger United fans than the Gallaghers are City (and that is taken from the fact that they hold / held season tickets, travelled away regularly etc) yet hardly any mention about City or Liverpool. Bonehead and Tony McCarroll have a lot to answer for though for putting up with that shit.

As a non Mancunian I really don't care about either club. Though City always had my sympathy being the "working class or people of the City club", but now I just can't be bothered about clubs that are in Arab, Russian or American hands. Same goes for PSG, Barca etc.

No club ever has won anything without money, ever, though. It just comes from a different source. So called historic clubs like United, Barça and Real made their way to the top and built their "legend" the same way City is building its legend for future generations.

You're right. But it just feels different from the past. Nowadays it's just about buying a lot of players, whether in the past there was i.e. a maximum of foreign players and now teams don't have much connection with the country or let alone the city they play in/for (this is also due to globalisation). And there was also less trade between clubs. There's a lot of talent wasted on the benches of these rich oil-clubs. Each team used to have three or four great players. So now the rich clubs have more power. Also supported by the new CL rules by the UEFA. The gap is getting bigger and bigger betwene the big and smaller clubs.

It's a normal local rivalry, similar to the ones found in pretty much any big city around the world - be it football or not.
United were undeniably the best team in the country for large parts of the 90s and 00s and since Fergie retired City have dethroned them, it used to be fun to watch unravel before the days of social media. Now it's more like a boring soap drama. Stick to lower league football where the real magic happens.

So now the rich clubs have more power. Also supported by the new CL rules by the UEFA. The gap is getting bigger and bigger betwene the big and smaller clubs. I dont believe rich clubs have more power, they've always had the power. it's more the big leagues that have more power. CL, Premier League, Liga... etc For the past 30 or 40 years, it's always the same teams winning the champion's league. There's the odd underdog, but it's usually Barça, Real, Juve, United, Bayern. Sure, big clubs have more money, but so do the so-called "smaller" clubs. The gap is more growing between pro / amateur football to me. In league one of every major european countries, there's always been 4 or 5 big clubs, 10 middle and 4 or 5 coming and going. That has not changed in the past 30 years. As for the local connections, you are right, but if you take historic players, most were also "imported". Let's take the best players from the past : Barça (Maradonna, Cruyff, Messi), Juventus (Zidane, Nedved, Platini), Real Madrid (Beckham, Di Stefano, Kopa, Ronaldo, the original). All imported. Barça still have a lot of players from around the city, same for Real Madrid. PSG has got 3 players in the starting 11 from their youth team. United at its peak, had Beckham, Guigs, the Neville brothers... etc I can totally understand the "local" importance of a club, but a city is made up of people coming and going from everywhere in the world, so having a team of foreigners to play for a club is not that shocking to me. The end of foreigners limitation actually increased competition, because investors could help clubs to rise (PSG, City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Atletico Madrid...etc). Those clubs were nowhere to be seen before Bosman. "Historic" clubs are actually doing everything they can to try and stop newcomers to shake their very established world. Dont be mistaken, football has always been a business backed by people with money. Only now the amounts are getting bigger and bigger.

Well Im not a fan of either club. Im not even a football fan. That's why i asked this question. Being a Man City fan seemed to be a big part of their public persona at least in the 90s. And they were oh so vocal about it. I was just curious.

A local rivalry is normal, and I'd go so far as to say that the Manchester rivalry is fairly good-natured compared to others. United had massive success from about 1992 to 2012, which coincided with Oasis's success, so obviously Liam and Noel were going to be pretty vocal about their dislike for United.

One of the reasons why I got into Oasis was that Gallaghers supported City, not United. I fucking hate glory hunters and after seeing Gallaghers were "real" I started to appreciate them even more. Not saying all Utd supporters are glory hunters but supporting City while they were utter shite really showed they cared about the team. It reminded me of the times when I travelled 130km to see my team lose on a cold rainy night in October and then come back home at 3am to sleep a few hours before school

I know we have fans all over but at no point has Manchester ever been mostly City.
