NEW MONKEES SINGLE COMING NEXT WEEK, ALBUM SET FOR MAY 27th
The Monkees’ 50th anniversary album — and first in a decade — called Good Times!, will be released on May 27th. The album’s lead single, “She Makes Me Laugh” — written by Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo — will drop on April 25th. In addition to a previously unissued Davy Jones track from the 1960’s, Mike Nesmith sings lead on three new songs, with Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork, who still tour under the group’s name, having contributed to the entire project. The album features songs the group passed over back in the day from such heavyweights as Carole King & Gerry Goffin, Harry Nilsson, and Neil Diamond.
The main draw of the new album is the inclusion on newly written songs by such “modern” songwriters as Cuomo, oasis’ Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller, Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, XTC’s Andy Partridge, and Fountains Of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger — who also serves as the album’s producer.
he full tracklisting to The Monkees’ 2016 album, Good Times!
“Good Times” (Harry Nilsson) “You Bring The Summer” (Andy Partridge) “She Makes Me Laugh” (Rivers Cuomo) “Our Own World” (Adam Schlesinger) “Gotta Give It Time” (Jeff Barry/Joey Levine) “Me & Magdalena” (Ben Gibbard) “Whatever’s Right” (Tommy Boyce/Bobby Hart) “Love To Love” (Neil Diamond) “Little Girl” (Peter Tork) “Birth Of An Accidental Hipster” (Noel Gallagher/Paul Weller) “I Wasn’t Born To Follow” (Carole King/Gerry Goffin) “I Know What I Know” (Michael Nesmith) “I Was There (And I’m Told I Had A Good Time)” (Micky Dolenz/Adam Schlesinger)
Sorry, I meant the part about it originally being planned for a Weller (or Noel?) album.

Sorry, I meant the part about it originally being planned for a Weller (or Noel?) album. I don't know, but if this is true it makes me think it was written exclusively for the Monkees.

•"The Birth of The Accidental Hipster" is sung by Michael and Micky and is one of the songs that Nez was very involved in its concept. "It's almost the centerpiece at this point," said John Hughes. "It's the best Nez vocal performance on a record I've heard in a good 25 years."

listened through hola.org
it's psychedelic. it's alright.
easy to imagine weller singing the verses and easy to imagine noel singing the "choirs of angels all singing along" bridge.
feels like an amibitious/experimental throwaway song that they just gave to the monkees.

Just heard it and think it would sound great as a Weller/Noel duet. I could see it as a grown up version of Swollen Hand Blues. The biggest shame is it is not likely I'll ever hear a different version since the Monkees want this as the centerpiece.

It sounds okay. Reminds me of the early Pink Floyd singles but obviously not as good. I really enjoy the Rivers Cuomo song though.

I didn't know what to expect but it's a nice little time!

The opening part sounds like Noel (especially 0:24-0:36) and then it turns into Weller. Interesting. Good song too.

I read Wiki and some sites on the net but I still get the Monkees. Were they a "real" band, in the sense of writing and playing their own songs? It seems they were just a product of a TV series. Doesn't that make them "manufactured"?
Nothing wrong with being manufactured. Just want to understand the hype around them.

Doesn't that make them "manufactured"? Nothing wrong with being manufactured. Just want to understand the hype around them. Every band is to some extent "manufactured". That said, the Monkees were created for a TV show. All the tunes where written by other people. Then after a bit they decided to try and break the "manufactured" idea and wrote some of their own material which turned out to be quite good. So, to answer your question.... Yes. They are both "real" and "manufactured".
