On the surface the simple story is about a man who goes mad and believes all humans, apart from himself, are robots without minds. Under the surface the book is then satire on things wrong with America / The World, using the robots as a metaphor for how humans can commit slavery, wars, greed... all written in Vonnegut's weird post modern style. If you've not read any of his books before I think Slaughterhouse 5 and Cat's Cradle are both better. X

Slaughterhouse V has been on my to-read list for ages. When I'm done with For Whom the Bell Tolls and re-reading Crime and Punishment, I might get on it. Well, after The Book of Dust, of course.

Vonnegut's books are all really short and quick and easy to read. I find they're good as snacks between bigger, harder going books. Like the Gormenghast trilogy which I've been chewing on for years. X Really? That's good, I've been wanting something to help break up reading War & Peace for the first time and Chekov was my working-idea. Do you think Vonnegut might be a good choice?

I've only seen one Chekhov play, but Vonnegut will definitely be more fun (even if the humour is pretty dark). X

Finished For Whom the Bells Tolls, absolutely magnificent book. I'm tempted to line up A Farewell to Arms with Lord of the Flies to break up re-reading Crime & Punishment.

Reading Lord of the Flies, it's great. Did you not read that at secondary school? I thought everyone did. That and Of Mice and Men.
