Couldn't find a thread on this so what books are people reading at the moment, or have just read? Recommendations on great reads would be fantastic also.
Books I've currently read:
Austerity Britain: 1945-1951 by David Kynaston Empire by Jeremy Paxman Morrissey and Marr: The Severed Alliance by Jonny Rogan Arsene Wenger: The Biography by Xavier Rivoire East of Eden by John Steinbeck

It's been awhile Matt but the last book I've read cover to cover that wAs engrossing and riveting was Clancy's. " patriot games "
Book totally pisses on the movie , there is a ceremony in book with British super secret spy's where Ryan is allowed in to there circle that was fascinating best book for me that I bothered to read , when I saw the movie I wanted to walk out , juvenile shit compared to the book man , I know it's old you probably read but it's best I got ..
I will give you a book that's a fascinating read but I read it a couple of lifetimes ago in high school it was the only book in high school I didn't buy crib notes for thTs highest praise I can give " the magician" it's about this lawyer who defends a kid who killed another kid in front of everyone in school whata read and what a end if you can find a must

Paradise Lost by John Milton
Must say, the second time through it much better. Didn't really get it the first time and I thought it was dry. But this second time around (years later) the language seems much more apparent and beautiful. And the overall story is more compelling. It's a headache because almost every other word is a reference to something in history or another author. It's not a book that can be read through once or even twice.
Currently, I'm on Keith Richard's Life.

Just finished a novel by CJ Sansom called Winter in Madrid. Set in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War and during WW2, it paints a brilliant picture of Spain and Europe in general under fascist rule but has a riveting plot tying it all together. Recommended for people who enjoy quality fiction but also ind history interesting.

With everything about in the world today, people still find time to read novels? Even as recreation? Weird.

With everything about in the world today, people still find time to read novels? Even as recreation? Weird. What's weird about wanting to do something that doesn't require text , video chat , hands free cell phone chat and all other gadgets that take away from broadening your mind ? As for the world what's weird about wanting to step back from it Nothing

Dunno but I find the whole technological world a bit intimidating, I know nothing about it and the only thing I can do with a computer is use Microsoft Word and the internet. I have a mobile phone, but I don't even know what model it is. The best gadget I own is the ipod, for obvious reasons. But everything else I feel is superflous. Reading gives me peace of mind like music. Everything else about today like technology is so in your face, I'd rather just stay detached from it.

Yea me too. @kitjenson may be just fucking Round he got a wry sense of humor that's why I replied to him he knows its not personal and more than likely he's kidding if he's not his loss .... As for modern techno , I dont need to tell you how lame I am still can't transfer pics here , I stopped trying There is something about reading , first it's always better than the movie cause nothing beats your own imagination .... And gives you peace ,perspective , and discipline because you can't finish a good novel with popcorn and slurpee in 90 minutes ,it makes you think , imagine , expand .....great thread Matt

I believe @kitjenson was making something known in the literary world as a joke. I read as much as anyone, just rarely do I pick up a novel and read it. It was a joke pointed at all those current high school students you can't even speak with out the use of short hand text language. Reading is a very important and vital skill.

Recently just finished books 2 and 3 of A Song of Ice and Fire. I'm about half way through A Feast For Crows now (book 4). Really enjoying the series. I have Book 5 lined up and then it's onto Wheel of Time (Book 6 is the next one in that series for me).
I think before that it was Han Solo at Star's End and Splinter of the Mind's Eye. I don't get to read too many novels during college term though.

Not the first time I've read it, but yesterday I finished Geroge Orwell's 1984. Absolutely brilliant. The scariest fact for me is that it was written in 1948, and yet it depicts all the totalitarian regimes quite accurately.

Finished a crime novel called Vigilante by Kerry Wilkinson (I think)
Now reading a book about how germany lost the war in the space of 22 days at the end of 1941, first non fiction I've read in a while, good stuff so far
