The amount of knicker-twisting about people boo-ing the national anthems is mad to me, as well. Does anyone actually care about it? It's football, it's a laugh, it's a bit of shit-housery. It's not the UN Summit. I would be thoroughly disappointed if the Italians didn't do some operatic boo-ing over God Save the Queen this Sunday.

If I didn't understand English I would probably love God Save the Queen, but since I do, I feel massive pity for you guys every time I hear it. Let's hope the Italian fans can make us all a favor.

Russell knows it’s coming home. England til we die. 🏴
In all seriousness, I love listening to Russell Brand. He always has some fascinating thoughts, no matter the subject. His passion, and enthusiasm is always appealing as well. This, too, is an excellent watch.

I don't get the fury over the apparent 'dive'. Yeah, Sterling made the most of it but he was touched. Certainly enough to impede if we're being objective.
This isn't on the Neymar scale, he's just an effin prick in general and will trip over a blade of grass if he could.

God Save The Queen is indeed dreadful, it's not even about England, it's just about her. Jerusalem is better and they play that at the cricket. I still don't get all the bitterness, maybe its a brexit thing because we've won fuck all for 55 years and aside from the dreaful tabloids and a minority of knuckle dragging fans, most are alright. I see plenty arrogance from fans of the big countries that tend to win fairly regulary.

For the founders of football, with the richest league in the world, it just won't stop being hilarious to an outsider how you guys just can't seem to win again. But since England actually have been close recently, that fear of the meme dying I'm sure has added to further animosity. Then there is also the factor of the relatively "easy" way past the groupstages in both the past World Cup and this time around, the home advantage being the cherry on top. If it's really coming home, I just want the road to be harder than that. If England had won during the last 20 years I couldn't see myself being as engaged in all this "bitterness" now, but since it's still one of football's best running gags, it would be silly not wanting it to continue!

That's not something I identify with, I wanted City to win the Champions League because they haven't won a European cup for decades, If Italy were playing someone who hadn't won it I would want them to win. We spoke about where the games are being played the other day, we aren't getting shit from FIFA and little from UEFA, I don't see the big deal about playing a lot of our games at home.

Not saying otherwise. For me it totally depends on the team and the circumstance. I desperately wanted Altetico Madrid to win at least one of their two finals, definitely wanted City to lose(very much a hipster position, I know), just as much as PSG the year before. Sure, it might be fair that you play at home this time, but it only makes me less sympathetic to you guys haha. I have a huge pet peeve against hosting nations winning in general, it takes something away from the actual performance, though many times I'm sure that's unfair of me. But we have England in 66, Argentina in 78, France 98 who, coincidentally, won their first World Cups when playing at home. There's no real solution to it unless we repeat the chaos of this tournament, but I just think it's a shame how such a great competition can so often be decided by home advantage. Yes, I would have cheered for Italy no matter what on Sunday, but the Wembley factor means I will do it even more.

Perfect post. It's this 100%. Looking at how the tournament opened up for England and the fact they've not faced stiff opposition is just luck. I just can't believe it'll be this England team that lifts a trophy vs the Gerrard, Lampard, Ferdinand, Owen, Beckham, etc team. I'm sure the latter team would have battered them. At the end of the day, we're just grumbling. England will win on Sunday.

Just mad to me that so many people want to turn football in Wimbledon. Gary Lineker, who's always been liable for a wet-wipe take or two, tweeting about how boo-ing the anthems isn't "classy", and everyone in his replies being all "very mature Gary, let's be classy and try to win fairly." Have any of these people ever watched football before?! I hope both anthems get booed on Sunday, I hope the Italians are already thinking up some funny and anglophobic chants to sing at England players, I hope it's an intense and brilliant atmosphere and not a bunch of people drinking Pimms and shaking hands at halftime. Love to see this in Italy this week: ...That's the spirit!

This team is younger, better organised and more talented. Two semi finals on the bounce, it’s not an accident.

I think it’s funny how the sympathy’s have changed over the last 72 hours. Most people I know would have wanted England to win the final, especially against Italy, but that sterling scene made everybody change their colors to blue even though Italy is even worse when it comes to diving. I think part of it are the obnoxious england fans on Twitter and Reddit. I personally just don’t want the meme to die, it’s funnier to watch these tournaments knowing that you’ll find a way to fuck it up.

The whole booing the national anthem thing has happened for a long time, whether it's England fans doing it or other nations booing our anthem when we play there. I don't see the big deal. Who cares really? But it's 2021 where people have to take offense at everything.
And if I wasn't English I'd boo GSTQ because it's a terrible national anthem.

This team is younger, better organised and more talented. Two semi finals on the bounce, it’s not an accident. Individually the early 2000s team is superior or equal in every single position. Current CBs and keeper haven't been tested and are so-so at best. Of the first XI, Sterling and Kane are the only players that would get in the 2001 England XI . The current team has good players, are well drilled and are playing together as a unit. As has been stated many times, they've had an easy route to the final and we won't know how they'll fair against decent opposition until Sunday night. In 2017, Pep Guardiola said he could not understand why England did not achieve more with players such as Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney, Ashley Cole, Paul Scholes, Steven Gerrard, John Terry, and Rio Ferdinand and claimed they were on the same level as Spain's golden generation of 2008–2014. So for me: England 2000s > England 2021

First, like you said they're playing Italy. And secondly, apparently(I don't recall this and haven't gone back to it) England should have had a penalty soon before the Sterling incident, and then I have no problem with diving at all. Two wrongs sometimes make a right, if you're wronged by the ref you can always use some cheating to make it even in my book. And sort of beyond the point, but it's ridiculous how brilliant Sterling has been, and this shit is what people will talk about. Yawn. Name one player who wouldn't try to get a dodgy penalty in a semifinal at home.

It's a shame to keep talking about it because, as you say, the focus should be on how Raheem has found that 2017-2019 form just when it was make or break time for Starting XI England career, but it really isn't much of a dive. He's got a low centre of gravity, he's already moving at speed, one defender leans into his leg and the other hip-barges him. It's a soft penalty and he makes the most of it like anyone would, but by the way some people are carrying on you'd think he'd dropped to the floor after a gentle breeze blew on him. I honestly didn't realise how much a competitive England team would rattle the rest of Europe. I mean, I get it, but still. Chill, everyone.

1995 I was 11 at Lansdowne road Dublin, England fans start a riot, game abandoned, I was called an IRA loving Fenian bastard by full grown men, 2005 england played northern Ireland in Belfast, windows of my house and car smashed by england (and northern Ireland) fans, again called an IRA loving Fenian bastard and told to fuck off back down to my Fenian hole in the republic, 2016 I was called a cheese eating french kunt in Marseille by england fans, when I told them that actually I'm not French I'm Irish, I'm back to being a Fenian bastard and even got a couple of minutes of their fuck the IRA song... In no way am I saying that all england fans are like that, I know they're not, and I know my luck is pure shite, but I've been all over Europe to watch and play football, almost all places have their share of arseholes as well but never with the level of pure red faced anger I've experienced with some england "supporters"...makes it real fuckin difficult to like a successful england team, so I'll be supporting Italy on Sunday and should Italy win the only people I'll feel bad for are those living anywhere near wembley, cause fuck knows how some of those "supporters" are gonna react...

The golden generation of England had too many egos who couldn't get past the fact they played for rival sides at club level. There was no unity that todays players have. Southgate deserves a lot of credit for that.

No doubt about it, England fans have a terrible reputation on the continent. I always remember the water cannons and tanks coming out in Belgium during Euro 2000, all over the news it was. But the English football team and all that surrounds it it as ever a microcosm of what the country is and the battle over how it should be framed. As such, the hooligans are just one part of that story. That’s just the state of the nation - the team and manager exemplifies the multicultural forward thinking country it should be along with so many of the fans. It’s the reactionary nationalists versus the liberal and progressive folk. Don’t get me wrong, I’d have loved to see England knocked out such is the instinctive rivalry there but taking a step back from that tribalism, the team is symbolic of the more progressive ideals of what the country should be about along with many of the followers. If these lads were knocked out, the fascist nutjobs in the public and government would be frothing at the mouth about liberal causes being a distraction, and the usual suspects like Sterling being absolutely pilloried (I wonder why...). There’s been proper cheerleading on numerous causes from Kane, Henderson, Sterling etc this tournament. I wouldn’t be fussed if they won by driving a clear wedge between who this is for and who it isn’t, e.g. by calling Boris Johnson or Priti Patel a c*nt. As a Scot, that would be an England victory that would make me sleep easy.

The “home” fixtures debate is one of the best/worst. All 4 semi-finalists played all their group games in their own country. England come through a semi-final and the issue becomes a problem for some characters. I mean, none of those other teams played any games at home past the groupstages, while England will have played 3. That's quite a difference. A) It wasn’t an issue until England have done well. B) It’s never ever been an issue in competitions where there is a host nation. C) I’ve not heard any Italian, Danish or Spanish fans saying how unfair it was on other teams that they got to play their group stage games at home. And don’t even start with diving and simulation, which is a European disease that we had to learn to accept as part of the game of football.
