Trying to put this derailed thread back on the tracks, the House passed the 1.2 trillion dollar infrastructure bill. It was even bipartisan. Biden will sign it soon. About $110 billion will go to roads, bridges and other major surface transportation projects. Passenger rail will get $66 billion, public transit will get $39 billion, and safety programs for highways and pedestrian walkways will get $11 billion. About $55 billion will go to expanding access to clean drinking water.
This will surely get his popularity ratings past the 30's and into the 40's.

Joe Biden gave half of Afghanistan's frozen assets to 9/11 victims. WTF? ? Why? Meanwhile something like 30 million Afghans are currently starving to death and are in desperate need for all of their assets returned. Does Joe Biden know that Taliban and Al Qaeda are not the same thing? Or is he just leaning on the fact that most Americans are probably too dumb themselves to know better?

Does Joe Biden know that Taliban and Al Qaeda are not the same thing? Or is he just leaning on the fact that most Americans are probably too dumb themselves to know better? Because the USA isn't in Afghanistan anymore. I agree the USA should do something, but with how disastrous the exit was, there is no chance in hell that funds are going to the Taliban, an enemy the USA has been fighting since 2002 and would most likely fund themselves rather than the people who actually need it. Taliban have no clue how to run a country other than enforcing religious bullshit rules like they did in the 1990's when they first came to power. Most Americans should know the difference between Al Qaeda and The Taliban. The CIA helped fund one after all.

Does Joe Biden know that Taliban and Al Qaeda are not the same thing? Or is he just leaning on the fact that most Americans are probably too dumb themselves to know better? Awful decision, while children die of starvation and the nation is on the verge of mass famine. The Taliban may have given free rein to Al Qaeda, but the Afghan people never voted for the Taliban nor had anything to do with 9/11. (Of course, no administration is ever going to be straight up about the fact that 9/11 was engineered by Saudis.) It was the U.S. that decided to spend 20 destructive years in Afghanistan and seizing their assets after abandoning the effort is just stabbing the people there in the back twice. This was done for political reasons – Biden fears the optics of appearing to give money to the Taliban. Making it about 9/11 plays much better (even if it plays on myths) and also it's advantageous if the people face hard times-- it further destabilizes the country (which they hope will strengthen an opposition that currently doesn't have a prayer). But realpolitik aside allowing children to go hungry for political ends is the height of immorality. People look away from the suffering of other cultures far too easily. (And absolutely, the 9/11 victims and families should be taken care of, but there are other resources for that, and other responsible parties.)

Great Job America and Democrats. We've had protection for abortion for the last 50 years, with Democrats claiming to want to codify that right into law for the entirety of that time, having plenty of opportunities to do so.
But now, despite having a majority in the Senate, Congress and the executive authority of the White House, that protection on abortion rights is now in danger.
Will Biden push for a new amendment for abortion rights? Will he end the filibuster? I sincerely doubt he will. It will likely be left to the states to decide, despite a majority of the population of this country agreeing with the pro-choice position, with some polling suggesting as much as 70% as pro-choice.
What a monumental failure of democracy. What a terrible failure of democrats. It's this lack of action and strength that led to Trump in 2016. And unfortunately, will likely lead to Trump in 2024.

He will not. If he were going to end the filibuster he would have already done so for the far easier triumph of the voting rights bill, which is existential to democracy and the basis of all other rights. As for the Senate, there is a majority in name only. It's just an illusion.

It is theatre, but it’s the kind where John Wilkes Booth is in the balcony with a gun pointed at our heads.

Definitely some dark times ahead and I wish I could be a ray of light, but I think the only thing we can all do is just stick together and fight for one another.
Not sure how old you guys are but I feel like the younger generations (especially of women) have to really learn how to lead now, more than ever before. It’s not right that it’s put on them, but it is how things have worked out, even after all the people who really tried so hard to make things better. It seems a whole lot of musty old ideas just got bottled away for a bit and came right back to haunt us.
Everything one can say seems completely inadequate to the moment we are in, given all the things we're up against, but I'd also say enjoy your life and do whatever you believe in to the fullest. It doesn't have to include hope, which is so often just a way of clapping to keep the monsters away. "A wonderful thing happens when you give up on hope--you realize that you never needed it in the first place," said the environmentalist Derek Jensen. "When we realize the degree of agency we actually do have, we no longer need to have hope. We just do the work. We do whatever it takes."

Politically - Instead of Conservative, I now identify, and have for some time, as a Libertarian. Small government, no new wars abroad, against globalization. And most importantly, let people do what they want as long as it’s not hurting others. End the War on Drugs. Legalize and Regulate. NYR

Politically - Instead of Conservative, I now identify, and have for some time, as a Libertarian. Small government, no new wars abroad, against globalization. And most importantly, let people do what they want as long as it’s not hurting others. End the War on Drugs. Legalize and Regulate. NYR I have a few questions for you. Genuinely asking. Seeing as one of the key tenets of Libertarianism is cutting regulations and making the government as small as possible: Legalization is one thing, but how can a Libertarian believe in regulating drugs? Wouldn't the government need agencies to enforce those regulations? Don't those things inherently contradict Libertarianism? Do you support open borders, and do you reject the very notion of border control? If you do, why continue to support Donald Trump and "building the wall"? Do you support government-sanctioned safety testing on cars? Do you believe that seatbelt laws infringe a citizen's freedom? Do you believe that drunk driving is okay as long as it doesn't hurt others? Another tenet of Libertarianism is deregulating the markets and, to quote an oft-repeated Libertarian phrase, "letting the free market decide." Like me, you graduated college during the Great Recession caused by corporate greed, the cutting of regulation, and the cutting of resources of the bodies like the SEC that are meant to regulate banks and Wall Street. We are seeing corporations price gouge right now in a period of inflation. Why should any reasonable person expect "free market decision" to work ethically, and in the favor of citizens, when we have seen the damage it has caused, and continues to cause, time and time again?
