As You Were charted at 30 in the US, whereas WMWN charted at 184, according to Wikipedia.
That’s a shocking fall off, despite WMWN being so much better. Strange.

On iTunes it wasn’t even listed in the new music/release category. He had done Stern and several other interviews for AYW. Plus it’s rather apparent that even in two years, streaming has completely overtaken purchasing albums. In my opinion, the algorithm for streams counting as album sales is way off the mark. Personally, I feel like streaming is essentially theft and I don’t do it. If I like something, I’ll own it.

As in any other business, they probably think the effort is bigger than the reward? It would probably have charted better with big promotion, but at what cost? It's a bit like "could I shag Beady’s Here Now's mum".. well yes... But is it worth the effort?

I still buy physical product (CD's not vinyl) but I love being able to stream via Amazon unlimited and not having to rip music to my iPhone.
To answer your question, there was way more promo for AYW as others have pointed out with Stern (which is right up his demo)and TV appearances, we got jack squat this time around.
And as another poster has said he'll never move major numbers in the states so why bother injecting money into promo here when he won't stand to make much profit. The fact that he sold as much as he did is impressive, I can assure you it was the small but dedicated fanbase he still has left.
What he needs is a full tour where he can bundle some copies of WMWN with tickets, that can help his numbers and exposure.
As frustrating as it was I will say that Warner probably made the right call.

I'm not complaining though, the rollout with his Manchester gig, BBC performances and the biblical event that is MTV Unplugged has made me a happy camper.

I don't buy phisical midia anymore cos I don't even have a CD player, not even on my notebook, funnily enough I have an old cassette player, so where is my Why Me, Why Not? cassette edition?

It only failed because it was never given the chance to succeed. Even the release of the physical album in shops was terrible (later release dates?!), let alone lack of promotion.

The real answer is that AYW charted on the billboard 200 albums chart, which counts passive listening. WMWN charted on The rolling stone 200 albums chart which doesn't count any forms of passive listening. This was atleast one contributing factor, along with the debut hype for AYW and the somewhat low key release of WMWN.

Rolling stone also appears to show drastically different results than billboard.

I still by the physical media, but the only place I have a CD player is the car. I’ve a couple of vinyls but not record player either (not even in the car!!!)

Remember when As It Was was released in the US 6 months after the rest of the world? When you do that sort of thing, you piss off fans and then they aren’t motivated for your new album...

MAYBE it's in some way related to the fact that any US fan who ordered from Liam's site HAS YET TO RECEIVE THE ALBUM?? ...just maybe...

This is why I don't bother to order from Noel or Liam's sites as an American usually. Always took a month to get the album and paid out the ass in shipping every time. Meanwhile, I got the vinyl album for $15 on amazon and received it in 2 days and got shipping free since I bundled it with other shit.

I definitely am still a CD fan. Found WY?WN at the local barbes & Noble in DC. Seems like physical CD is available via online sources.
I definitely do not stream. WTH people...think of all the bandwidth zipping thru the Air like digital pollution because people are so detached from physical goods.
Sadly...I think CDs will disappear in another 5 years and if you want to buy physical you’ll have to go 100% vinyl. Keeping a table/needle and speakers/head-end will become a necessity.
How they do it nowadays, as mentioned above, he needed to have US tour dates to bundle the album with. He’d have gotten 20k-30k with his tixs.
