The three big singles (Wall of Glass, FWIW, Chinatown) were all written or co-written by songwriters, which definitely did a lot in terms of public reception. He did write some good stuff, no doubt (my favorite on AYW us Greedy Soul and that's just Liam) but bringing in those guys for the singles really reduces the risk of failing. Never heard any of these songs on the radio here in Canada. Big singles, not having it I've given up on listening to the radio for the past few years, but I feel like the last new Gallagher releases I heard the Edge or Indie88 play were The Roller and If I Had A Gun. I could be wrong and hope I'm wrong, but I feel like they just play Oasis rather than any solo Gallagher stuff, which is a shame. Have you heard anything newer?

The radio stations are crappy these days. I heard holy mountain driving to Toronto a few weeks back. Never heard any beady eye or Liam yet. NGHFB first two albums I heard a few times, not in a while tho. Oasis every day tho. FM 96 played Gas Panic not to long ago, which was the first time I heard that.

Almost as if it's an Oasis forum or something. Let's all just take a moment to appreciate where we are right now: Liam is BACK where he belongs - singing great rock 'n' roll tunes with a snarl and a sneer, being a fucking legend, and looking cool as ever. Noel is finally putting his eclectic tastes into his music and he's done it with more vigour and passion than he's had since 1997. These two months have been a massive and very positive turning point in the Gallagher-music narrative, and we really should celebrate that. D'you know what I mean? I think this bears repeating. There's a lot to be happy about with these 2 albums. What I really want to do is, after some time passes, to compile the ALMOST 30 NEW SONGS we got over these 2 months and find out which ones make my Top 10. I love somethings about AYW and I love somethings about WBTM. For me it isn't about familiarity vs experimental, as the more sonically adventurous direction of WBTM follows naturally from the more adventurous half of CY, which I think is some of his best work since the 90s. The other half of CY is more plain and not bad at all but very autopilot and less interesting. Sometimes I like an AYW song more, sometimes I'll like a WBTM song more. I'm just glad to have so much "Oasis" music to enjoy from the reinvigorated Gallagher bros. I'm happy for all the successes they've both had this year.

Never heard any of these songs on the radio here in Canada. Big singles, not having it Those were the first three singles no matter how much they were played on the radio. It isnt as good as it gets at all. Man Who Built The Moon as a song is as good as it gets, and more of that kind of song (in terms of one that actually sounds finished) would have been great. Its evolved, but nowhere near as much as Noel would have everyone believe and it suffers a great amount from being written in the studio. "As much as Noel would have everyone believe"? Maybe different people just have different tastes? To me the album only suffers by having not enough songs (9, not counting the throwaway instrumentals) and one mediocre track in Be Careful.

Me, and some others kept the faith and actually said hang on, no, he just needs good marketing and his name on the front of everything. Yes, im gonna remind you fuckers cos basically we were right and you were wrong. "You fuckers"? "We"? No idea what conflict you're building up there mate...how does any of this matter when comparing AYW and WBTM anyway? For the record, I'm not somebody who trashes Liam for a living if that's what you're thinking - I've always loved the guy, thought of him as a world class frontman, just one with average songwriting skills. I still think that while I prefer WBTM, the two 2017 albums are perfect together. If you want a more classic Oasis-like rock sound, AYW is perfect; if you want an evolution of the Oasis sound and something a bit different, WBTM is as good as it gets. They made the best Outkast format double album without realising it! As You Were / Who Built The Moon?

I like AYW, but I'm not sure that's 100% true. Let's look at what Liam had in his arsenal for AYW: - one of the biggest names in the rock scene - a huge marketing campaign that went on for half a year - a team of some of the most successfull songwriters in the industry That's kind of a "too big to fail" situation, isn't it? Completely understandable route to take of course - unlike Noel, Liam needed something successfull to build a career on, and unlike Noel, Liam's job description is "singer/rock star", not "songwriter". There were no gurantees regardless of who Liam brought in the album is still at least half his work, had it been shite the marketing would only get you so far. Its interesting how a lot of people gave him no hope and now its like it was a dead cert to do well. Exactly!! People were saying that he would never sell like Noel and he would play in small venues. But with his name and a great album he's playing in places that Noel would never sell out by his own.

I had to choose As You Were. Fair opinion, but it doesn't have anything that sounds like Stop the Clocks does it? Just sayin'.

I had to choose As You Were. Is it because you had heard all of WBTM 10 years ago already?

I like both As You Were and Who Built the Moon? They are both really good albums. And I've been team Noel, so there is no bias here. I just feel like As You Were is a better album. Perhaps the "army of songwriters" helped. That being said, my favorite song out of both albums combined is Dead in the Water.

5/10 Who Built The Moon 7/10 As You Were
Well done, Liam! Didn't expect that to be honest, but he put out a good record and seems to be back on track. This is Liams year!

But give me Jack Reacher, James Bond, Mission:impossible, Die hard anyday. I even enjoyed Die Hard 3 and 4. Fun! Nice! Life! Youths! Beautiful! I'm all for it

On first listen to AYW, I was let down. I found it boring and a bit of a slog. But later I was surprised with how many of the songs stuck with me. I’d find myself humming FWIW or Bold or Greedy Soul or IGB or especially Paper Crown without even realizing it. It’s sort of a stealth grower in my estimation - it may not seem very exciting on the surface, but the songs really take hold of you with repeated spins.
WBTM has been the exact opposite so far. On first listen I was absolutely elated at the newness and boldness of it, and, had I posted a reaction here then, I probably would’ve joined the crowd of “best since MG!” cheerers. But every subsequent listen was less and less exciting as the thrill of “the new” dissipated. And once I wasn’t listening, the songs didn’t stay with me - I haven’t found myself humming any of them when they aren’t on. And I began to wonder, once all the production bells and whistles are stripped away, how many truly great SONGS are on here?
Maybe my perceptions of the albums will keep evolving but right now that’s where I’m at...
AYW - dull presentation of surprisingly strong songs WBTM - exciting presentation of surprisingly weak songs
If only David Holmes would do an AYW remix!! 😆

In my opinion, Who Built the Moon has the higher peaks but As You Were works better as an album. This is more than a bit surprising, considering how many people were involved in the making of As You Were.
I think the arse falls out of Who Built the Moon in the middle. She Taught Me How to Fly feels flat and overlong, and BAWS sounds unfinished and somewhat regressive. Be Careful What You Wish For is an interesting enough attempt to rewrite The Right Stuff, but the absence of a While the Song Remains the Same-type coming after it makes its nearly six minute runtime a real chore to sit through.
There are some tunes on As You Were I really don't care for (mainly For What It's Worth and I Get By), but somehow, taken in the context of the album as a whole, I find myself not really noticing them.

Really? I see Who Built the Moon as a kind of filmic experience to be enjoyed from beginning to end, whereas As You Were feels like a collection of well-written songs. Also, I think She Taught Me How to Fly is amazing While we're here, these are the playlists I've settled on for both: AS YOU WERE1) Wall of Glass 2) Greedy Soul 3) Bold 4) For What it's Worth 5) I Get By 6) Paper Crown 7) Come Back to Me 8) You Better Run 9) It Doesn't Have to Be That Way 10) Chinatown 11) All I Need WHO BUILT THE MOON?1) Fort Knox 2) Holy Mountain 3) Keep on Reaching 4) Beautiful World 5) She Taught Me How to Fly 6) Intermission (Wednesday Part One) 7) Be Careful What You Wish For 8) If Love is the Law 9) The Man Who Built the Moon 10) End Credits (Wednesday Part Two) 11) Dead in the Water (Post-Credits Scene) Both really very good, but WBTM is so much more up my street and doesn't have a single weak moment on it. Plus more variety, better production and flow, and...well...better songs, in my opinion. What an utterly incredible year for us, though - I mean, look at those two tracklists; there isn't a single stinker between them!
