Yep, it has given me the strongest positive reaction. It's an absolute rollercoaster ride of a tune. 'A wonderful racket' as one of the guys said on the radio. When people call a lot of Oasis post-90s music bland, you kind of understand when you hear this. It's absolutely off the scale mental and my opinion is as strong as it was when I first heard it. Big shout that is matt. Although its great for you, not often songs come along that make you feel like that.

What do you think about the song from a songwriter's point of view when you just play it on acoustic guitar and sing? Just seen this sorry. I just don't really like the melody, I think it sounds a bit better stripped back but then again that is what it does have going for it - energy. The one bit I like is the melody for the "Smells like 1969" line, that's nice. The rest I'm not really interested in. I like it way better now than after the first hearing, but there is no real singing melody in the first half of the verses, that's what bores me. He stays mostly on the same note all throughout the first half of the verses. And that's poor work for somebody as capable as Noel Gallagher.

'she had a look you won't find a book and she smells like 1969' that is beyond every fucking lyric I've heard in my life. amazing stuff all way long. this song is so strong, even the haters love to fucking hate it and he fucking predicted it, he knew he'd shook up some Oasis fans and some people who loathe the song will fucking cover it anyway

He does the same in WAL But honestly, the point of staying on one chord isn't laziness. The idea is to have greater room to create more melodies around it within the key. WAL for the most part is actually one chord with everything following fairly linear melody wise, but if you had a multitrack for Holy Mountain, you'd find that there's a lot melody going on around that one chord. It's almost like jazz (hear me out on this), you begin with a central idea and then everyone else play off that idea. That's what's happening here. Another example of this is Tomorrow never Knows. It's just one C chord with every instrument working around it. Now, in not saying Holy Mountain is Tomorrow Never Knows, but it's in the same spirit.

Ironically, when a song depends on one chord, the vocal is the most restricted note wise. Tomorrow Never Knows has the least interesting vocal of any Beatles song for that reason .

Only thing i'm happy about is that noel and liams song are played in bars, heard WOG, GS and HM last week in the same bar and i am not in england. But this song, as a "ca plane pour moi"rip-off still doesn't work at all for me.

When people call a lot of Oasis post-90s music bland, you kind of understand when you hear this. It's absolutely off the scale mental and my opinion is as strong as it was when I first heard it. Big shout that is matt. Although its great for you, not often songs come along that make you feel like that. To be honest, I don't listen to much music like that - upbeat, uptempo, etc. Mainly because when I do, it comes off as insincere and fake. Look at U2 and Coldplays recent efforts at 'happy' songs, and they're just pathetic. Of course, it's not on a par with the likes of Live Forever or Some Might Say - I've conceded that no artist, let alone Noel, will ever reach those euphoric heights again. But it gives me a strength of feeling better than anything I've heard in my 10 years as an Oasis fan. I can only count on one hand the number of songwriters who make genuinely joyous music, and Noel is the best at that in my opinion. It's the most difficult thing to achieve in music - joy is something that is expressed so publicly and easy to express when we feel it to the point that music is almost irrelevant. It's not a taboo emotion like many of our insecurities which we often keep to ourselves, so art is used as a way to express more somber moods. 'Sadder' music is much easier to create maybe because it's more contemplative and reflective, and artists have the time to craft that if it's something that just doesn't go away . However, joy and happiness is something a lot more spontaneous and harder to catch in my opinion. Those moments of euphoria are more of a fleeting moment and you just can't contrive that. When songwriters do this, it comes off as cheesy, chart baiting and dishonest. Of course it's subjective; while some critics of Holy Mountain on here hear a cheesy song, I hear one that is as mad as a box of frogs. Cheesy songs just don't have big brass, heavy bass and a tin whistle - that's eccentricity at its best. Noel's songs, especially classic Oasis, are built like rockets to reach the stratosphere and Liam's voice is the fuel that fires and propels them. The only regret I have for this tune is not having him sing it. But I've always said if Noel writes a song and I'm dying for Liam to sing it, then he's done a great job with it. I'm not interested in Liam singing plodding mid tempo tracks like much of Noel's recent output, but with this one, it makes be believe there was always more greatness left in Oasis, even if the last number of albums failed to deceive. It's also why I'm always delighted when I hear a great new Noel song - first of all, it vindicates our arguments even further why Oasis are a great band by proving that they weren't just winging it in the 90s. It sticks it to the snobs who hate them. There are plenty of sad sacks here who want Noel to fail (we all know who they are), likewise with Liam. Why anyone would want Noel and Liam to fail is beyond me. Failure for both is failure for Oasis. They are not, and never will be, true Oasis fans.

Ballad of The Mighty I is the best song Noel has ever wrote. With old Liam's voice...could have been something huge.

'Dream on' is probably Noels second best song ever written. Far above the quality of tracks such as Rock N Roll Star and Listen Up.

As with a lot of things, it was surprising to start with. A new song on first listen very rarely matches what you expected in your head.
It's by no means a bad song. I'm delighted that Noel finally appears willing to release something different to his usual autopilot output.
It's really exciting to have an album coming up where none of us can tell how it's going to sound. Honestly, if it were another album full of "The Girl With X-Ray Eyes" style tripe, I'd be far less enthused. It's been done to death at this point.
And yet, that's precisely the kind of change I'm seeing so many people incensed by.
Where I'm from, the people most annoyed by it are those who haven't listened to anything outside of Oasis' first two records in about 2 or 3 years, which I couldn't be happier with. Obviously all guesswork at this point, but if Noel can release something that actually challenges (and, dare I say it, alienates) the knuckledraggers on this occasion then that can only be a good thing.
As they sit there bemoaning the lack of Beatles references and basic chiming 60's guitar solos, maybe it'll actually wake them up to music outside of their little bubble.
Long overdue, I'd say.
