Just to add: Alone On The Rope - 4 - Meh I'd Pick You Every Time - 7 - Alright Simple Game Of Genius - 4 - Meh Let The Lord Shine A Light On Me - 3 - Meh The Good Rebel - 7 - AlrightI find songs like AOTR, SGOG, LTLSALOM really dragged out and boring. I don't think there that special and for me that's why I rate IPYET and TGR so much higher than them Can't disagree more about almost all of this Alone on the Rope and Let the Lord are among Noel's best solo tracks in my book, while I'd Pick You and The Good Rebel are definitely among his worst.

Screw it, I've just had to upgrade While The Song Remains The Same from 8.5 to 9 after listening to it once more.

Couldn't agree more, I'd Pick You Everytime is so beautifully un-Noel. I can't see him ever putting it on a record because I don't think it's really his sound, but the lyrics are so sweet and innocent, the guitar is so chilled, and I love the harmonica solo. You can't help but think he'd been having a Neil Young listening binge before writing it, it has his influences all over it. I love it, one of my favourite Noel written songs ever.

I love I'd Pick You Everytime and it looks like I'm about the only one in the forum that likes The Good Rebel. Mind you, it's not one of my favourites (I'd put it towards the bottom if I had to rate all NGHFB songs, to be fair) but I don't find it as offensive as most people here. It's just alright. It could even be my favourite Heathen Chemistry-era song (Idler's Dream was written much earlier).
The only NGHFB I really don't like is A Simple Game of Genius. The intro is nice but after that it becomes late Oasis by numbers: it sounds tame and the melody and lyrics are lazy and uninspired. It's Aphrodite's Child's The Four Horsemen on tranquilizers.

Same here, i enjoy both first songs you mentionned, for what they are, good bsides, but find A Simple Game of Genius very long, boring and very badly produced. Also love Let the Lord Shine on Me, which is the best Bond song Noel ever wrote. It's a very 70s-ish Bond Theme. this one should have been on the record instead of Stop The clocks.

I'll be honest, I still don't really get the fuss about Alone on the Rope. Yeah, it probably should have been on his debut, but I don't think it's one of his best solo songs.

I think most people like Alone The Rope so much cause it's exactly what you'd imagine Noel's solo stuff to sound like in the first place even before the first album. It's got this classic, instinctive Noel Sad Song kinda vibe and sound. Saying that i think it's just an alright tune, nothing spectacular. Joke aside: It's a perfect song to sleep to

Alone on the Rope is a quality tune, but wouldn't have fitted on the first record.

Alone On The Rope is a stunning song and Noel doesn't even realise it. It definitely should've been on his debut as the closing track. It would've worked perfectly after The Wrong Beach.

I think Alone On The Rope was intended for album #2 and was forgotten about because of the accidental inclusion on the first album on German Amazon.
It's a class tune. Really glad I got to hear it at TCT 2013.

Album #1 b-sides were almost certainly all planned to be used on the AA record which got scrapped.
Hince the very unfinished nature of those recordings.

I like Alone On The Rope, but never understood the hype for A Simple Game Of Genius. It's such a cock tease of a song - an intriguing opening, quite mysterious and then, thud, plodding guitars and meandering melodies plunder their way through.
Really really dull song.

Screw it, I've just had to upgrade While The Song Remains The Same from 8.5 to 9 after listening to it once more. Noel's production was brilliant on this album (the intro to the song you mentioned, so many lovely flutters he added). So much better than his first solo album and incredible to think he mainly produced Heathen Chemistry which sounds so bad.

The soundcheck version of ASGOG from Hong Kong '09 is incredible. Agree that the production on the album version is poor.
