Never seen this promo before. The only Whatever tapes I've came across had the standard artwork and one with a white label but this one is different due to the tape itself. Could it possibly be the one with the "All the young dudes" outro? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/253075535368

Thanks for posting Jim! Never seen that version before. Would be great to finally hear the original withdrawn master of Whatever. Looks a bit like a bootleg at first glance, but there again some of the early cassette promos were quite basic in appearance. The main cause for concern is the lack of visible phone number for Creation or Ignition, as seen on this version. eil.com/shop/moreinfo.asp?catalogid=286639However, two of the song titles on this new eBay listing are given in the same distinct way as the eil.com tape. They differ slightly from those printed on the commercial release: "Good to be Free" instead of (It's Good) to be Free, and "Slideaway" instead of Slide Away. Could be worth a go if the bidding doesn't go mad.

I could be wrong but it looks fake to me. The label on the tape isn't well cut and looks handmade.

I think it's legit. Whether or not it contains any alternate versions who knows. If the prices is right, roll the dice.......

The run time for whatever is the same as standard version...so doubt it has any different outro

The run time for whatever is the same as standard version...so doubt it has any different outro The All The Young Dudes Version is supposed to be just a different mix with the chant removed from the released version, so the running time would be the same I guess.

Yes that's right- the released version seems likely to be a slight variant of the original mix (i.e. largely the same, but with the "all the young dudes" backing vocals muted). On CD-1 of the Safety Copy of Masters set track 4 is a TV backing track of Whatever, where a faint trace of those backing vocals can still be heard on the outro. (For some of Oasis's early Top of the Pops performances Liam sang live over studio instrumentals, but for Whatever they mimed to the full mix). Track 5 on CD-1 of the safety reels is an un-mastered version of the final mix, pointedly labelled: Whatever (no 'Young Dude')...

Anyone here going to bid on this btw? I was considering it David but in reality I have no means to even play the cassette to check the track, never mind rip it. So I won't bid incase it means someone from here losing out. I would throw a fiver into it if a L4E member wins and is willing to share it should it be the Young Dudes outro though.

Anybody tried asking the bloke if it's got the outro you're looking for?

Hi Jim and @kitjenson I've just emailed the seller asking about the version on the cassette. Will keep you posted on any replies!

He just replied, explaining that unfortunately he doesn't have a cassette deck anymore so is unable to check it for us.
I'm happy to put a small bid in later tonight. Then we can find out either way.

The running time of the Young Dudes version is extended. Whatever (TV Track) (with the Young Dudes backing vocals): 7:01 (16 extra bars? - Forgive my lack of musical knowledge here) Whatever (No Young Dude): 6:54 Whatever (1994 CD Single): 6:21 If no-one wins this, or it isn't the Young Dudes version, someone with a bit of technical skill should be able to patch Liam's vocal from the clip we have over the TV Track version with the backing vocals.

I would surely chip in as well! Can't imagine the cassette going over the table for that much money anyway, though I guess chances are small that this might indeed include the Young Dudes version.

Sorry guys, I got outbid on this at the last minute. Anyone here have more luck?
Looking back I'm surprised that the withdrawn mix of Whatever didn't make it onto the safety copy of masters. The relevant (DAT or half-inch analogue) master tape was probably within arm's reach when those CD-R backups were made at Whitfield Street.

I'd be more than happy to contribute my little money if anyone on this forum was lucky enough to purchase it.

Yeah, very weird that it wasn't on the Safety Masters and pretty disappointing too, as this would have been the best quality we'd have ever got it. Still, I'm convinced a pretty good version is possible by some special spectral work on the backing vocal version on the safety masters and the clip that was released on alt.music.oasis

Perhaps some mid/side processing would be helpful too - i.e. blending the sides signal from the instrumental with the alt.music.oasis clip. Btw must admit I have lost my copy of that clip! Is it still available online anywhere?

Apologies if this has already been discussed but it looks like someone *did* patch the TV Version from the Safety Copy of Masters with a Liam vocal:
Correct me if I'm wrong but surely this is an outfake/fan edit and not the actual version?
(There's a really weird jump at 3:45 where I presume the poser struggled to blend the vocal track and the TV Version...?)
It even made it into the recent James Hargreaves "Top 10 Rare Oasis Tracks" video, LOL.
