In an interview with the Guardian he said:"I’ve got a thyroid problem – Hashimoto’s disease – so I can get a really hoarse voice. It makes you tired and your bones are creaky, but you have this drink and it makes you a bit Jumping Jack Flash. It’s very fucking boring, it doesn’t get you pissed, but you can have other stuff as well."

I have it too, the symptoms are what he is describing (fatigue, aches, weight gain, etc). The difficult thing with thyroid problems is getting the medication balanced. Hopefully he remembers to take his pills every day.

Same, it runs in my family actually. Luckily i only really get it around my nose, around my face when i don't shave, in my eyebrows and hair sometimes, but i've got decent treatment to control it as much as possible so it's not too much bother. Some of my family have it far worse than me and all over their body, so i'm thankful i don't because i know how bad it can be. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy either. Psoriasis can be linked to hypothyroid problems, so it would make sense if Liam had both.

Psoriasis? in layman's terms it's a skin condition where basically your skin replacement cells are replacing skin much quicker than the normal person, so a accumulation of skin cells grow and it causes patches on your skin that can be REALLY itchy or feel like it's constantly burning if not treated. Some people get it really bad and it's probably a lot worse than it sounds. Some people might also have psoriatic arthritis, which mostly affects the joints in your hands and feet. There's no real cure for it, but it's treatable and manageable. Luckily mine is very minor and just flares up now and again, which is good when you're as vain as me.

Psoriasis is awful. I have something related to it, which shows up on the top of my head from time to time. It actually caused a lot of my hair to fall out (thank God I have really thick hair).
A friend of mine has it really bad. He even has it on his face sometimes. He's really insecure about it. People often think he has poor hygiene or something.

I don't think it's psoriasis, although I heard it (edit: the thyroid disorder) can cause some skin rashes too. What he's got is an auto-immune disease that attacks the thyroid. Thyroid disorders can have several causes, on Liam's case it's an auto-immnue condition called Hashimoto's disease.

I don't have any personal experience with Hashimoto's, but based on a little googling I did, sore throat and neck swelling are fairly common complaints! Terrible to think that Liam's been accused for years of being irresponsible and bringing it on himself, when that may not be the case. :-(

Hashimoto's disease generally causes hypothyroidism which can result in a hoarse voice as he says. It is manageable medically but can see why he'd have so many problems with his voice over the years. Unfortunate.
