Man U. gets the ball rolling
July 23, 2003
BY TIM KORTE
SEATTLE--The world's most famous sports team put on a delightful exhibition to open a four-game United States tour.
In its first game without superstar David Beckham, Manchester United beat Glasgow Celtic 4-0 on Tuesday night behind goals by Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ryan Giggs, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and David Bellion.
The eight-time Premier League champions decisively handled their Scottish League rivals, and the effort was sure to keep Manchester United's legion of 53 million worldwide fans as happy as the team's American sponsors.
Organizers hope the seven-city tour will boost the profile of European soccer in the United States. Manchester United plays three more games, with the next one Sunday in Los Angeles against Club America of Mexico.
And while American fans are less familiar with other Manchester stars like van Nistelrooy, the Red Devils didn't miss Beckham, who was sent last month to Real Madrid for $39.4 million.
The talent gap between the teams became apparent before halftime, when Manchester led 3-0.
The rout began in the seventh minute, when van Nistelrooy took a centering pass from Solskjaer, fought off defender Stanislav Varga and put the ball into the right corner off the hands of Celtic goalkeeper Magnus Hedman.
Van Nistelrooy struck again in the 28th minute, drawing three defenders and Hedman as he sprinted in from the right. He centered to Ryan Giggs, who was trailing on the play and kicked it in easily for a 2-0 lead.
In the 39th minute, Solskjaer took a pass from Gary Neville and kicked the ball into the middle of the goal to make it 3-0.
Bellion, in his first game with Manchester since signing in the offseason, scored in the 72nd minute when Paul Scholes tapped a pass to him in the box and Bellion beat reserve goalkeeper Robert Dougla

79,500+ at Giant's Stadium tonite! It was great. Man U won 4 to 1 and it was quite an exciting matchup. Juventus did not start their "A" team and when they brought them in, Pavel Nedved had an explosive goal. I honestly don't think Tim Howard ever had a goal scored so fast and so hard. It actually energized the crowd. Howard earned his keep and he had some great saves. Im sure you can catch some highlights on the web. It was definitely worth seeing, and im glad the rain didnt come pouring down until afterwards. Daysleeper wanted me to give an overview of the game, so I will save my usual comments for my last sentence. Some of those guys were sooooo hot!

One of Manchester United's big summer purchases was an American. Tim Howard, from North Brunswick, N.J., was in goal again after impressing his coach against Juventus with "his agility and his reflexes and his speed and his courage."
Howard again showed off his reflexes to make the first save of the game. He also saved a second-half goal with a spectacular effort, leaping to his right to get a hand on a Barcelona scoring attempt.
"We're taking that lad from the game knowing he will compete for the starting job," Ferguson said, commenting how Howard looked more comfortable and less nervous than he had the other night.
