US loses hard fought opener to Turkey with questionable PK
DaMarcus Beasley had put the United States ahead in the 36th minute, outjumping Ibrahim Uzulmez to head the ball past goalkeeper Omer Catkic. But Turkey tied it three minutes later on a penalty kick by Okan Yilmaz after Danny Califf and U.S. captain Frankie Hejduk surrounded Tuncay Sanli in the penalty area. It was unclear whether Califf was called for knocking down Sanli or for a handball. Howard guessed correctly, diving to his right, but Yilmaz placed his low shot near the post, too far for the U.S. goalkeeper to reach. Howard, who plays for Major League Soccer's MetroStars and who may transfer to Manchester United, is starting because Brad Friedel was given the tournament off by coach Bruce Arena, and Kasey Keller is recovering from minor elbow surgery. In the 70th minute, Turkey scored the go-ahead goal after Volkan Arslan fed the ball down the middle to Sanli. Howard, playing just his seventh international game, came out to get the ball but couldn't do so in time, stumbling as Sanli went wide and sent the ball into the open net. Clint Mathis, a second-half sub for the United States, nearly tied the score in the 77th minute. After his initial shot was deflected by a defender who was on the ground, Mathis lifted a left-footed shot toward the open goal, but defender Bulent Korkmaz cleared it off the line.

Columbia - NewZealand (3 - 1)
LYON, France (AP) -- Colombia ended a 13-month drought without a goal, scoring three times in the second half Friday to beat New Zealand 3-1 and stay in contention in the Confederations Cup. Colombia (1-1) lost to 1-0 in its Group A opener. It plays Japan for a place in the semifinals. New Zealand (0-2) plays France next. Colombia, the South American champion, had not scored in five games, since a 2-1 loss to Mexico in May 2002 -- a total of 542 minutes. Colombia broke a 1-1 tie after New Zealand's Chris Killen was sent off in the 68th minute. Defender Mario Yepes scored in the 75th with a bicycle kick and Giovanni Hernandez added an insurance goal in the 85th. New Zealand opened the scoring in the 27th minute on Raf De Gregorio's shot from outside the penalty area and Jorge Lopez tied it in the 58th.

For Christ's sake give us the Donovan PK... How much clearer can it get ... Otherwise one individual mistake made the difference. Berhalter gives the ball away in the box..... Brazil ... dunno what to say, definitely not World Champ soccer last nite...... One bright note: US Keeper Howard : World Class ... ManU are lucky bastards
