I have been playing since I was really young, but actually got good about 6 years ago. I'd say I'm a little above average (That might sound arrogant but hey, It's an Oasis board !)
I play alot with my dad, and on Chess.com. Anyone else like to play ?

time to time, used to play flicker chess at school where you take turns flicking the chess pieces at eachothers lineup and the person with pieces left wins, you can actually get some good height on the chess pieces if you push the top down into the board and angle it got quite popular, was something to do during winter when we couldnt play basketball, it all got quite tactical and had a whole set of rules, the school banned it when we started doing tournaments because the library didn't like the noise though... ....yea thats my story.

I was really good at speed chess, nearly every time I'd win after time ran out for my opponent.

I've got a big bishop.
Plus I'm a king and queen all at once.
But. Don't try and knight me!

I picked it up in my mid, late twenties. I'd play Chessmaster Live on Xbox 360 (just offline, though.)
I lost interest because I had all the basics down except forcing a checkmate. Usually I'd have to wait until I had almost all my opponent's pieces captured, and even then I'd have to either call it a game or let the computer finish for me.

Got into chess around the same time as the recent boom that coincided with The Queens Gambit on Netflix, Youtube kept recommending videos and I decided to get stuck in one day. Hadn't played at all really up until that point, totally love the game now.
Prefer Bullet chess the most, especially with no increment, its just none stop action.
Didn't realise there was a chess thread on here, never seen one so thought i'd do a search Anyway is anyone watching the Hikaru V Magnus final later? should be a cracker. 2 best speed chess players battling it out. Might clash with the World cup but I'll be watching both.

I'm not watching the match what with the World Cup stuff, but hoping Magnus wins.

Wish i had played as a kid, always ignored the game, thought it was for nerds basically. Spent like the last 12 odd years playing online poker, but since getting into chess i rarely play poker anymore. Just find chess a lot more interesting, hate the luck element of poker. Magnus should/will be the favourite but Hikaru I feel is the one player who can seriously test him in this format. Would be foolish to doubt magnus though, he's the GOAT.

I play a bit on both: last time I was into the game, I was around 1400-1500~ on Chess.Com and around 1800-1900~ on lichess. I prefer slower chess, though, although bullet can definitely become addictive once you get into it. Started new accounts on both recently and I'm working myself back up from the bottom, blundering pieces and all sorts. I've got a feeling Hikaru will win, I'm not sure Magnus is as passionate about the game as he once was, which is understandable after a decade of complete dominance. But that's why Kasparov is still the GOAT for me, twenty years of domination like that is nigh-on unparalleled into any kind of competitive pursuit. Magnus could catch him with another five years at the top, though.

Those are my exact ratings I kid you not, 1400 chess.com and 1800 lichess, actually rated a little higher in bullet - 1600 chess.com
Weird.
Can't recommend Lichess enough for anyone looking to improve though, all the puzzles being free is much better than chess.com trying to charge a monthly fee for the exact same thing.

Used to play a lot ... got up to around 1850 a while back. But then life took over. Watch a fair bit online at airports/hotels traveling around. Passes the time.

Would love to learn how to play. What's the best way to pick this game up (e.g. good manuals, online play against computer, etc??)?

Would love to learn how to play. What's the best way to pick this game up (e.g. good manuals, online play against computer, etc??)? Trial and error really, there's a lot to learn initially and the learning curve just gets steeper. The game is so complex there is no one best way to improve, but playing a lot and learning from mistakes is the only real way. Chess puzzles are also a great way to learn, but that's more about tactics. (Use Lichess for unlimited free puzzles) Open account at chess.com, start at beginner (should be rated 400) then work up from there. Review games (to learn from mistakes). Also lots of free content on Youtube. Well worth it, such a great game. Once it gets hold of you though can be addictive. Especially bullet.

Free site, just make an account and there's lots of little lessons and puzzles and things on there to get into it, from the basic rules to the openings to endgames and all the rest: lichess.org/signupLet me know if you fancy a game, I'm getting back into it at the moment now tennis out of the picture for the winter.

I used to play a lot, but I’m not really good at it because at some point you have to go into theory to become a better player and that’s just boring to me. It’s still my go to toilet game though.
I recommend this game to everyone who wants to truly experience self-hatred 🚬
