Battlefield by Blind Guardian is the most perfect power metal song, ever.
For those who think I have lost it, I haven't.

I like to do one of these once a year, it's fun to watch your taste evolve - my favourite albums of all time, with no more than two per artist (well, Noel might have sneaked an extra one in there if you count that, but shhh): lol @ trying to sneak WBTM in the bottom corner.

What's everyone favourite closing track of the year so far? My 2022 playlist needs a better ending so far, my tracklist obsession is well-documented at this point and I shall not stand for lowered standards in my own playlists.
This is what I have so far, any suggestions of how to round it off nicely would be appreciated:
1. Intro / Chaos Space Marine - Black Country, New Road 2. As it Was - Harry Styles 3. Everything's Electric - Liam Gallagher 4. Johnny P's Caddy - Benny the Butcher & J.Cole 5. Neck & Wrist - Pusha T & Jay-Z 6. The Lightning (Parts I & II) - Arcade Fire 7. You Will Never Work in Television Again - The Smile 8. Alive Ain't Always Living - Quelle Chris 9. Magenta Mountain - King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard 10. The Last - Denzel Curry 11. This is Not America - Residente & Ibeyi 12. Remorseless - Billy Woods 13. I DON'T KNOW HELP ME THIS NEEDS A GOOD CLOSER

For some reason I just started thinking of Waka Waka, Shakira's 2010 World Cup song, and it dawned on me how incredibly weird it is that this song, about how it was FINALLY Africa's turn to host this event, was sung by... a South American. Not a South African, not even an African, but a chick from Colombia. Fucking wild. When Sweden hosts it again I want some South Korean DJ to represent us.

Still though, a bit weird that she got to do the song directly referencing Africa(this time for Africa). And i don't recall that one, I'm ashamed to say. Anastasia, wow I can't have thought of that name for at least 15 years. Pretty sure she had a song going "Your love isn't fair" or something like that, but she must have just disappeared. Anyway, to bring up my own nationality once again there simply is no better championship anthem than Campione 2000.

I have heard the Fontaines D.C. album but it didn't quite land on first listen, Dogrel still towers over all their other stuff for me so far.

Yeah that'd be all kinds of wrong. Not fully listened to the new Fontaines D.C. album yet but I'm pretty hopeful as I've quite liked the singles I've heard so far. Here's a fun song I feel like you might like for your 2021 playlist if you haven't heard it already...

And in the end, I've just opened and closed the playlist with the "Dawn FM" radio concept from The Weeknd's new album. It's a bit of a placeholder, but it'll do for now. Here's the playlist should anyone be interested, 55 minutes so far, will try and keep it updated as more stuff comes out.

I heard good things about that Weeknd album but I've to give that a spin either. I'll be sure to give the playlist a listen too! Here's my top 10 songs of the year so far (in no particular order)... - Black Hot Soup - King Gizzard & the Wizard Lizard & DJ Shadow - King of Sweden - Future Islands - Sideways - Flasher - Hi-De-Ho - Jack White - Ain't No Thief - Viagra Boys - King - Florence + the Machine - Talking To Myself - The Linda Lindas - Call Me Little Sunshine - Ghost - Ur Mum - Wet Leg

The DJ Shadow rewrite was a great instrumental banger - I'd love to hear some rappers have a go at tackling it, as well. DOOM could have killed it, RIP. I liked that Wet Leg single too, although I've still to hear the album in full. I'll add the rest to my "PURGATORY" playlist, where songs hang in the balance and wait to be judged, ha.

I'd definitely would up for someone rapping over it too. The Wet Leg album is solid and justifies the hype around the band IMO. No doubt it'll be some indie fans favourite album of year. I too have a purgatory playlist! It's getting pretty outta hand I must say. It's pretty easy to add to it but very little ever gets removed from it. It's currently at nearly 800 songs (52 hours)!! Some stuff has been in there years now.

Outside of Dawn FM, Chaos Space Marine, The Lightning I & II and obviously Everything's Electric (all of which I like) I didn't know the other tracks so I gave this a listen a few days ago and really enjoyed the a bunch of them (As It Was, Johnny P's Caddy, Simulation Swarm, Magenta Mountain & Phantom Regret By Jim). I thought the Big Thief track was fantastic!

"Johnny P's Caddy" has converted my hipster friend to hip-hop music singlehandedly, so there must be something to it that grabs people. They're not the tracks I would have had you pegged as enjoying, though - I was expecting "Remorseless" and "This is Not America" to be your kind of thing - I have now updated the playlist and the Future Islands song you recommended is included.

The drum beat and rapping on 'Johnny P's Caddy' is quite old school, which in line with a lot of what I like in hip-hop. The looped background vocal sample is reminiscent to something I've heard before but can't place off the top of my head - It's pretty hypnotic. I think I'm quite choosy with the hip-hop I listen too and don't know enough about the genre to specifically tell you what it is I like and don't. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe a lot of the hip-hop acts I enjoy the most (Beastie Boys, Death Grips, Run the Jewels...) are quite popular with white audiences. What that says about them though I don't know? 'Remorseless' is alright but it doesn't grab me instrumentally. The feature in 'This Is Not America' is way too contemporary pop for me and for whatever reason the rapper doesn't do it for me either. I thought the Harry Styles track was an enjoyably upbeat and understated piece of 80's inspired indie-pop. I had low expectations but was pleasantly surprised. 'Magenta Mountain' was pretty weird but I liked it. King Gizzard seem to release an album every other week!

'Magenta Mountain' was pretty weird but I liked it. King Gizzard seem to release an album every other week! Not much, I don't think. Hip-hop, for better or worse, is no longer confined to the black cultures which birthed it, proof of which is long-haired white kids like me falling in love with it. Now, it's the mainstream, with a million different sub-genres and all of them appealing to white audiences to some degree. You're right that those artists do appeal to white people, but then so does the trippy trap-pop of Travis Scott, or the nerdy weirdness of MF DOOM or Earl Sweatshirt, or the lyrical depth of a Kendrick Lamar or a Lupe Fiasco. I don't think there's many areas of hip-hop that you could say aren't now appealing across cultures somewhat, and the extent to which that has promoted/diluted/affected the music is open to debate. Vince Staples has expressed concern over the issues of black people being seen by whiter audiences as a source for art/entertainment to be enjoyed without any deeper actions or understanding for the causes of those issues. It's a double-edged sword. But no, I don't think there's anything particular to the likes of Griselda or Death Grips that makes them appeal like that.
