Slowthai gets album of the year for me, that side B is a thing of beauty Dave's We're all Alone In this Together is the only thing that comes close, just not sure about a couple of the lighter tracks but stuff like Three Rivers, Both Sides of A Smile and Heart Attack is incredible The lad is a great storyteller and I can see him going down the Stormzy's route in terms of success
James Blake and Sam Fender also get a shout, I know Blake's reviews weren't particularly eye-catching but as someone who's only got into him this year I can totally enjoy the pop melodies mixed with his signature soung and the melancholic but not too heavy atmosphere As for Sam, I've listened to the record a lot and haven't got bored of it, I feared it would be too samey but it actually flows really well I think he hasn't peaked yet, and that's exciting UK (pop) rock had been missing someone like him for a while
Some european stuff deserves a shout too: Balthazar, Georgio and my compatriot Fulminacci all nailed it with their albums

New Blind Guardian is dark and aggressive huh? GIMME IT RIGHT NOW!
Safe to say The Future Bites by Steven Wilson is my album of the year, a complete 360 turn from last year.

Iām still waiting on the new Neil Young and Crazy Horse album that comes out on Friday, but otherwise I think itās safe to say that my favourite album of the year has been Manic Street Preachersā Ultra Vivid Lament. The first song āstill snowing in Sapporoā is probably my favourite Manics song. Thereās a lot of touching moments on this album. As far as their slower, softer albums go, this oneās their best I think. I liked the sound and approach Idles took with Crawler (a bit of soul, a bit of Joy Division) but the songs arenāt all there, in my opinion. Lots to like but I donāt love it like the first two. I liked the new Billy Bragg album The Million Things We Never Saw. Itās not a terrific album but half of it I really like. Thereās one or two Iām not keen on but the rest is very satisfying, if youāre in the mood for singer/songwriter kind of thing. In terms of newer artists, I quite liked the new Snail Mail album Valentine. Thereās some good sounds and songs on it, particularly in the first half. I remember at the start of the year I was pretty certain the album of the year for me would be Viagra Boys' Welfare Jazz but in the past couple of days I've got so into Little Simz's Sometimes I Might Be Introvert that it's actually taken that place now. I still haven't listened to the new Manics album but I probably will before the year is over!

I would have called Andy Dowling a jerk (for forgetting to give passwords), but he belongs in my top 10 bassists so he isn't one after all.

Just discovered Wet Leg, and wow! What a banger "Chaise Longue" is.
Their Tiny Desk concert is really good. Love their looks and the room they are playing in.

I love metal elitists who think because band popular band shit. Nope, you are into bands that make the same boring kill death black thrash shit. It gets annoying.

Nothing against the original singer of Mind Odyssey but Hansi Kursch somehow did Slaves Of the desert vocally better for me. Didn't sound bored.

For 2022, Iām really looking forward to the mew Mitski album (feb) and the full release of Johnny Marrās Fever Dreams (April I think?). I decided to hold off on hearing the individual EPs. I want to hear all 16 songs at once and let that hit me squarely in the chest. The man is very good at what he does.

I'm hoping that George 'Corpsegrinder' Fisher hasn't recorded a Cannibal Corpse album by accident instead of a solo album because Acid Vat is a little bit too much the former.

I canāt seem to get enough of the Let It Be album lately. I listen to it a few times, feel satisfied, then find myself craving to listen to it again. And itās all the funny little numbers like āfor you blueā, āone after 909ā, āI me mineā, even ādig itā.

Say whatever you want about U2... they may well be hit and miss nowadays, but Lights of Home always gets me.

Say whatever you want about U2... they may well be hit and miss nowadays, but Lights of Home always gets me. I love the St. Peter's mix of this song where it has the strings in there that adds some awesome tension to it. Great song. Songs of Experience has some genuinely good songs... Love is All We Have Left and then that run from Summer of Love to Landlady. The other songs are alright, even if the three "hits" near the beginning cheapen the experience some. I liked the album as a memoir concept, not necessarily the political aspects that get inserted in and feel like a weird audience and cash grab (American Soul, Get Out of Your Own Way's second verse); Summer of Love and Red Flag Day execute that well though.

Screen Violence is a fantastic album. How Not to Drown, Final Girl, Violent Delights, especially, and then this banger of a tune that has a great drop:

Teenage Fanclub might honestly be the best band of all time. At least one of the most underrated, and ridiculously constant with brillant albums for three decades straight.
