Yeah, it'll be interesting to hear what their new songs sound like and if they're actually any good. Heard one of them on the radio. I love how they didn't even try to make anything contemporary; it just sounds like Abba.

I love how they didn't even try to make anything contemporary; it just sounds like Abba. And that's all they need to do. Their music is surprisingly fresh and relevant among Gen Z'ers. Dancing Queen, especially, regularly gets played and referenced (popular among girls especially), as does Momma Mia and Gimme Gimme Gimme. I think there was a decently popular TikTok trend that revolved around an ABBA song not that long ago too. Their sound was so ahead of its time though that all they'd need to do is work their magic in the studio with modern technology and build on their wide audence to work it all into a successful record. It would be crazy to see them actually do that but it would be amazing to see.

There are a few songs of theirs which I don't like (mainly from near their end back in the beginning of the 80s). But most of their music is truly class.

Now whatever you think of Girls Aloud (I was never a fan) Sarah Harding's death at the age of just 39 to breast cancer is truly tragic. R.I.P

My god drake has sampled “right said Fred”. I just had a stroke The man could probably enlist any producer in hip-hop that he wants, and he's out here at the age of thirty-five cutting heart shapes into his hair and basing songs off "I'm too sexy for my shirt" samples. And none of it will stop fourteen year old white girls loving him just as much as he loves them.

He hasn't even made a decent album since 2015, he's continuously been found to be grooming underage girls and beginning relationships with them as soon as their legal age (18 here in the US) and just hangs around with NBA stars and writes shitty lyrics about them in his songs.

He's the ultimate symbol of this era, when rap became the pop music of the time. He's hip-hop for people who don't like hip-hop, to use an already over-used turn of phrase. I can't see his sales declining until rap music as a whole relinquishes the crown, and that won't be any time soon. And for now, there's just too many basic white girls out there who couldn't tell you who the two members of Outkast were who will be bopping Certified Lover Boy all year. This is not to sound all gate-keeper-ish. Drake does have some good songs/albums. But it's obvious what he represents at this point, and he seems to be putting in no effort to be anything other than a pop-rap algorithm monster, so fair enough.

Just begs the question, though, doesn't it - Kendrick Lamar or Alex Higgins?!At the very least, it's a much tougher battle than Drake v Reardon! Next up, 50 Cent vs Barry Hawkins.

Ten years already since R.E.M. disbanded, sadly it seems that not many people are into them these days, maybe because they disappeared from the spotlight or Michael Stipe isn't doing proper music ever since.
Cool b-side from the Automatic For The People era.

Cool b-side from the Automatic For The People era. I thought it was longer than 10 years. I like some of REM's songs but I think they went downhill in the late 90s so I lost interest then. My favourite song of theirs is Orange Crush. I've always loved that.

Yeah it seems longer than that, maybe because they stopped being relevant way before they disbanded, sad thing is that people don't talk about them anymore, it seems young people aren't that much into their music these days, it would be great if Michael Stipe release a solo album so REM's legacy would still be popular I guess.

It's a shame that REM are not relevant anymore because they did have some good songs. I don't know if Michael Stipe will ever decide to release a solo album though.

Cool b-side from the Automatic For The People era. Yes, it's a top tune that. There was also that unfinished demo I loved called 'Devil Rides Backwards' that should have been finished. It seems to be the case they aren't listened much by the younger folk but I think this is a trend across most alternative rock acts from the 80s and 90s. U2 are another one - you could say theirs is worse as they have completely forgotten their core audience and failed big time in trying to desperately capture a younger audience. But even heralded acts like Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, Pearl Jam, dare I say Blur are never listened to by young folk. The fact that Oasis are is testament to Noel's songwriting abilities. I've always said Oasis are primarily a pop band dressed up as a rock act and that's why they endure to this day due to that universal melodic appeal. We're all going on about the ABBA reunion too - see how they endure with the younger folk, while acts from the 70s like Led Zep and The Who who were more hip at the time sink without a trace amongst the younger generation now. I'm not saying the poppier and more melodic an act are, the better they are but the chances of their music enduring more than an alt rock/rock act is much higher.

I like the three tunes that have came out but starting to fear the album may be a bit too samey as a whole Would be a shame cos I truly love Hypersonic Missiles, and I believe he can be that thing the young brits have been missing since the Arctic Monkeys first came onto the scene

Cool b-side from the Automatic For The People era. This was the B-Side to Losing My Religion of all songs - and I find it leagues better than the A-Side. R.E.M.'s halcyon days ('83-'96, the years with Bill) saw them see great success but I think the reason they fell out with newer listeners is from the lack of full fat LPs that delivered on all cylinders after Bill left. Automatic was their peak and Monster/HiFi was a step down from that brilliance, and the subsequent post-Bill albums only maintained handfuls of tracks over the years. I feel they went on for too long honestly after Bill left - they'd reached their creative and commerical peak in the early 90s and never got back there.

I was beside myself with happiness when I discovered the few solo songs Michael Stipe has released. But then, I've always been besotted with his voice and he still sounds lovely to me. I agree that the last few REM albums were not as great as the older ones, but what a legacy those are! And, to be fair, he could sing the phone book to me and I'd love it, which, of course, is not fair to the rest of the band, as they were great.

Worst choice on the table - one of the greatest artists of his time, and probably the most rock 'n' roll snooker player ever. No, I'm not a fan of either of them.

There's some truth to that, but I always felt R.E.M. had some underrated albums in that period as well. New Adventures is a brillant album, wonderful listen from start to finish. Accelerate is a pretty amazing rock n roll album from a band three years from retirement, and Collapse Into Now is basically a best of that does every REM style with brand new songs. Up/Reveal/Around the Sun is a pretty bad triad of albums for a band of their caliber, but funnily enough, all three had singles that you hear on the radio to this day (At My Most Beautiful, Imitation of Life, Leaving New York). In fact, the band has a ridiculous amount of singles of lasting universal and worldwide appeal - Losing My Religion, Man on the Moon, Everybody Hurts, It's the End of the World, The One I Love...can't think of too many bands that managed that.

You know, I've always thought the same. I've never thought REM released a bad album, aside from Around The Sun which isn't even bad, it's just tired rather than terrible. But all the other albums post-Berry before and after that album? Honestly all decent albums in my opinion. I think Up is one of the most underrated albums ever, Reveal has some of the catchiest REM songs ever, Accelerate goes at a raw blistering pace not seen since Life's Rich Pageant and Collapse Into Now, as you mention, is a brilliantly varied and comfortingly familiar album at the same time.

Agree, after Bill Berry left the band lost something, after New Adventures they lost their mojo and albums were all subpar, yet you can find lots of cool songs. Up and Reveal while interesting albums both feel too sedate, too many slow meandering songs with no impact. Around the Sun is just awful while the last two Accelerate and Collapse are too classicist imo, last two albums sounds like something they already did in the past but so much better.
