I still remember where I was when I first heard 'Listen Up', a very random place and time. This was before all the singles and b-sides were conviently listed and available on the internet, and instead you'd go the record store and randomly pick up an Oasis single with b-sides that were, in many instances, better than album tracks. A top 10 Oasis song for me. The drums are mixed too high, etc. but still a great song. God bless. What's the story? The story of me hearing 'Listen Up' for the first time or the story of when eva probably fucked David Hassellhoff? The story of me hearing 'Listen Up' isn't really interesting...the song just brings back very vivid memories of listening to it for the first time, in a very random situation while driving. I don't have very many distinct memories of hearing songs for the first time and 'Listen Up' just so happens to be one of them. I'll let eva tell the story about David Hassellhoff if she wants. Good tune.
Over-rated though in the sense i certainly wouldn't have it in a list of my Top 10 Oasis tunes.
Don't think it even comes close really, not even sure it makes my Top 20 either.

Possibly my all time favourite Oasis song. The version Noel did at TCT in 2010 was possibly my favourite live music experience. Indeed. The version on The Dreams We Have As Children is probably the finest acoustic version of the song out there. The outro where Noel sings "on my own" is just magical. As far as the overall song goes it is probably a top 15-20 Oasis song for me. Sublime vocal from Liam, a top 5 performance for sure but I don't think it is the top performance from him. The rhythm is great on it whether its Tony's drums or Bonehead's guitar playing. In addition to having a bonafide top tier guitar solo, Noel throws in a nice couple of licks in there as well. The lyrics have that magical Oasis quality to them where sometimes the gibberish just hits you right in your soul. Of course there are some simple truths or every day statements in there that just come off as poetic. Also like a true Oasis classic it balances a sense of melancholy within the lyrics with the uplifting feel of the music. That balance between those two emotions is what made Oasis such a great band. Few bands can comfort you and make you feel on top of the world at the exact same time. That is probably one of the biggest reasons why I love the band so much. Listen Up and Fade Away are kinda what I'd call life songs. They have valleys and peaks to them emotionally and lyrically with hints of nostalgia. It is strange to describe it this way, but those two songs just seem like life-travelers. If you play them at the right time at various points in your life they just hit you and resonate. |

This song is so much oasis 94. The studio version is perfect. I love the MTV version, better than the way it was played during the stop The Clocks tour.
I do remember as well the day I bought the Cigs & Alcohol single. I was happy to have new songs, I was happy to have a cd version of I Am The Walrus but I wasn't prepared for what was coming. Listen Up & Fade Away are great songs. They both should have been on DM. I bought it the same week as Whatever.

I read someone saying that is melodically, the best song ever. Maybe not, but the melody of that song really, really speaks to me, as the lyrics. It's a top 10 song to me, even top 5 sometimes, and my favourite B-Side.
And that piano version is gorgeous !

I fucking LOVE this track. It probably is my favorite b-side and I could never leave it out my constantly changing top 10 list.
Every version is great: original single, unplugged, 2006 acoustic version with Gem and the breathtaking TCT performance with strings (I get shivers every time).

I think it's such a good song and the fact it's hidden away on a b side adds to its status for me.
Controversially, I prefer the version on the masterplan album as they cut a small bit of the solo out, I just think it flows a bit better.
The acoustic versions Noel did with Gem and terry Kirkbride sound great too.

Love everything of this song and love every version of this song.
My most favourite live version is from Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver 1995, but Noel's version from Teenage Cancer Trust is truly beautiful too.

Too much like Supersonic for me to go on DM, but a great song nonetheless Actually thinking of Fade Away here, if they had someone at the time of BHN to calm the mood and they perhaps hadnt used Fade Away as a B-Side (unlikely I know), then perhaps Fade Away in the style of Warchild could have been a more chilled track to add variation to the running order? Just a late night/early AM thought |

I love these appreciation threads, so much love!  I remember when I first heard Listen Up with the knowledge of it being a B-side. My initial reaction was that this band can't be real. It was one of the songs that cemented my existence as an Oasis-nerd. |

Tempted to make a Listen Up Hate Thread. As I've mentioned on numerous occasions I really do dislike this song. It's just a really long and boring version of Supersonic with awful meaningless lyrics and very poor production. Definitely my least favourite 90s Oasis song. You're not a fan of meaningless lyrics? Supersonic? You're an Oasis fan? Fair enough mate but I always thought the lyrics carried more meaning than a host of Oasis songs. |

Just listening to the TCT 2010 version of this again, its superb. I've said it before but I'd love Noel to do more gigs in this style, or even a new album. Noel is absolutely in his element in this style.
I'm surprised we never got an unreleased version of it on the DM reissue seeing how Noel clearly loves the song. I'd love to hear an early demo with wither Gallagher singing.

Unfortunatelly I've never witnessed Liam singing this song live, but I got tears in my eyes when Noel played this song at front of me last year and I sung along! But I love studio and live version by Liam as much as this version. Think it was Vancouver 1995 when Liam said "it was great" after he finished singing. Love everything of this song. |

But I still don't think it comes near it's true potential. The production is absolutely horrific, and I'm not too sure about the arrangement either. Unlike Supersonic, I don't feel like this was meant to be a rock song - the piano version shows you the pretty sadness at the tune's core. Ideally, I would have liked it to be a cross between Slide Away and Cast No Shadow.
Should have been on Definitely Maybe nonetheless.

Owen Morris said himself that he regrets the rushed manner in which this song was produced, citing it as his favourite Oasis song I think. As I said earlier in this thread, the production is undoubtedly messy and I think you're probably spot on in that it could have done with the mystical qualities of Cast No Shadow. But that rough, hewn nature of many Oasis songs is what endears me to them. Along with Liam's vocals, it adds to that primal ethos that many rock bands aspire to achieve (although most largely end up sounding contrived). Undoubtedly, it wouldn't work without Liam's vocals, but his voice goes hand in glove with that raw sound, or more accurately, goes into battle against that sound. The same argument applies to Some Might Say - fucking up beautiful songs like that really shouldn't work, but in Oasis's case, it strangely does. Beautifully fucked up is how I describe it! |
