When Mick Jagger left his underpants at Knebworth House in 1976, the owners kept them in the safe - unwashed - as an unlikely valuable

Most of Britain’s historic country houses have treasured heirlooms to be passed down through the generations.
Only Knebworth House can boast a pair of Sir Mick Jagger’s old underpants.
The stately home plays host to summer rock concerts and its current owner, The Hon Henry Lytton Cobbold, has revealed some of the unusual mementoes collected over the years. They include the aforementioned underpants, which Sir Mick left behind after the Rolling Stones played the Hertfordshire venue in 1976.
“They were left at the bottom of the bed and when we changed the sheets, there they were,” Henry explained.
“They have never been washed and they have been in the safe ever since.”
He jokingly referred to the red Y-fronts as “the most valuable thing we own”, adding: “They are a very 70s pair of pants. And they are very small, but they do say Mick Jagger has a very small waist.”
Another item of Knebworth music memorabilia met a sad end.
“We used to have Ella Fitzgerald’s teacup with her lipstick print on it,” Heny recalled.
“It was hanging on the wall for years. Then one day an over-zealous helper washed it up.”
Oasis played Knebworth in 1996 and Henry, who will one day inherit a lordship from his father, said: “The one thing we didn’t keep was Noel Gallagher’s soap when he had a bath here.
“He and Liam were staying in Winnebagos but Noel was keen to have a bath in between shows. We showed him to a wonderful four-poster bath connected to the Queen Elizabeth Room, so called because lizabeth I slept in it.
“Noel has told a story of how a butler came in to offer him a bottle of champagne. Actually, that was my father who thought it would be nice to offer him a drink.”
Gallagher left an entry in the Knebworth guest book: “Noel Gallagher – clean!”
The underpants and other memorabilia will be on display at the house this summer as part of a rock memorabilia exhibition covering 40 years of Knebworth gigs including appearances by Robbie Williams, Led Zeppelin, Queen and Deep Purple.
Knebworth has been in the Lytton family since 1490 and is understandably expensive to maintain. The family have twice tried to give it away to the National Trust, but were turned down because its 2,000 acres were not considered sufficiently impressive, according to the family.
Lord Cobbold hosted the first Knebworth concert in 1974, with The Allman Bros Band, Van Morrison, The Doobie Brothers and The Mahavishnu Orchestra on the bill. This year Metallica and Iron Maiden will play.
Behind the fun of hosting rock events lies a serious issue: maintaining what Henry describes as “this beautiful money-pit of a house”.
He said: “For a historic house like Knebworth, these shows make a massive difference. We need to find £9 million at the moment just to keep the house from falling down and we’re not going to find that from selling cream teas on a Sunday afternoon.”
