Firstly, apologies if this has been touched upon before.
Has it ever been deciphered what the voices say at the beginning of Morning Glory?
If you listen from 8 seconds in, you can hear both female and male voices - I always find this sort of thing quite unnerving in songs yet too interesting not to ask - I can't seem to find any word on it.

Good question! Don't think this has been discussed before. I think the voice samples at the start are hard to decipher as there are so many competing sounds. Presumably they were added from the same radio scan that captured an excerpt of Soul II Soul's Love Enuff on the outro.
I just listened to the album mix, then some of the alternate SACD mixes on YouTube. Below is my rough attempt at deciphering what's said. I believe all these sounds are used in the finished mix but are even less audible.
At about 10 seconds, in a female voice: "at considerably increased risk of influenza..." Sounds like a news programme, probably Radio 4 by the sound of it. This is on the right channel on the album mix.
15 seconds in: a radio scan breaks into a male voice saying "society" 18 seconds in: a man says "what? D'You wanna be my boss mate?" 25 seconds in: an excerpt of a song - very distorted 31 seconds in: a male voice says: "and all the transfers standing by..." At around 33 seconds, just before the drums kick in, a male voice says something that sounds like: "All on board? Alright." Pretty sure that's not it though. It's so buried under everything else. Hope this helps.

This is on the right channel on the album mix. You're spot on about this. To be honest I've only just noticed these voices, and I know that for songs like Acquiesce it's been documented what the speech says - I wasn't so sure about this one. Like I said in the original post, I find it unnerving yet very interesting when voices are hidden in the mix. It's far from the most clear production so I'm impressed you managed to decipher anything at all, great job!

I agree on the voices at the start being simultaneously unsettling and interesting. I had the same response to the speech at the start of Columbia, until Anjali Dutt explained to me a few years back that it says "I've seen so much to disgust, mother take me in your arms". Until then I had thought it was indecipherable. The accent in which it's spoken and the competing guitar sounds made it hard to hear. Apparently this speech was sampled off a CD in the Real People's collection. Unfortunately they don't remember the artist or title. To me it sounds like it's from a drama, so could be it's from a film. Would be great to track down the source of it. Someone did this for the speech samples on Fuckin in the Bushes and it was quite funny to put faces to the voices. I think the footage was of people attending the Isle of Wight festival in 1970. There was a thread on this topic a few months back; can't find it now though.

There's definitely a certain ghostly quality to hidden speech samples, probably stemming from the whole "I buried Paul"/"Cranberry sauce" debacle with Strawberry Fields, or the "Fucking hell!" in Hey Jude - it's all rather spooky if you ask me. For me, the older a song is, the more I'm interested in speech samples low in the mix - I guess it's just because the older a song is the less we really know about the recording of it. If a song was released this morning with hidden speech samples then I wouldn't take much notice - recording has advanced and a lot more is digital nowadays. It's with the older recordings that everything was a bit more analogue, I feel this makes such speech features more interesting. I know it's completely rational that samples are added in during the recording process but I still find them quite strange.

Very interesting discussion. Morning glory isn't the best produced album, but it's sure interesting to listen to!

scott1 I just put this video together showcasing the speech samples discussed in this thread. Subtitles are available, and the video is also in HD to try and avoid any further loss of sound quality. The audio is sourced from the individual channels from the SACD remix. I did try and adjust the EQ to hopefully make the speech a bit clearer as well. I tried uploading a version of this with a clip of the original mix for comparison, but the upload was blocked due to YT recognising the copyrighted audio.

Fantastic effort, I've always taken interest in speech sampling - it gives an interesting sort of added depth to a song when there are voices low in the mix. Genuinely admire the effort you put in here davidjay, cheers.
