So I always end up getting a bit confused about what mags have said what about which songs. Thought I'd keep a bullet list of the comments to keep in straight in my mind and figured I might as well make it a thread so if anyone else found it interesting they could read to. I didn't include the French review translation because I don't totally trust google translate.
Might be super useless but figured I'd try because I am bored (It's raining cats and dogs), The stars beside the tracks are for when a review indicated being impressed by a track. I didn't put any stars for the NME track by track because the write up was pretty non-judgemental. They didn't really single out anything.
I've gone through NME-track by track MOJO Travelers Tunes
Still need Q
Flick of the Finger ** -Velvets-on-steroids (MOJO) trippy âRevolverâ sonically (TT)
Soul Love * -restrained, mysterious, sinister. Organ and muffled shotgun sounds (NME-TBT) -Kevin Shields-esque production, introspective and eerie number (TT)
Face the Crowd ** Stonesy handclaps, Zeppy wig-out, space rock outro (NME-TBT) -Early Who, psychedelic guitar breakdown (TT)
Second Bite of the Apple Gloomy, clickety-clackety percussion, echoey. Sound like The Eels (NME-TBT)
Soon Come Tomorrow * Oasis-eques circa MG, gentle strum, countryish strum builds to a guitar squall that ends up sounding more Ryan Adam (NME-TBT) -Slow building guitars a la Nich McCabe. SCYHO and Stand by Me mentioned (TT)
Iz Rite -Oasis-esque, upbeat strummer, cello, sunny chorus (NME-TBT) -MBV hissing guitars, glam stomp, Byrds-esque guitar (TT)
I'm Just Saying * Most rollicking number on the album, (NME-TBT)
Don't Brother Me *** Heavy footstep crunch-effects and tightly-wound acoustics (NME-TBT)
Shine a Light Dry drums, fast paced countryish, the odd Super Furry Animals electro squiggle before a big Lennon-eques piano drop (NME-TBT) Nod towards Lyla (TT)
Ballroom Figured * Most production bare song on the album, acoustic (NME-TBT) Stripped back, not strong melody (TT)
Start Anew ** Uplifting organs, "Sun-through-the-shrubs moment, Glasvegas-y guitar washes and acoustic kicks back and forth, tender. (NME-TBT) Big, grandiose and rock n roll and guitar solo (TT)
Lyrics Soul Love âGet up off your knees my friend, promise never to pretend youâre the apple of my eye, spread your wings and learn to fly.â Face the Crowd âplaying to the gallery when you know itâs time to face the crowdâ Iz Rite âWhen you call my name it takes away my pain, so only love remains⊠just say it againâ I'm Just Saying âYou might think the grass is greener, here I am on the other side,â âA 20/20 visionary would never waste a single day,â âfeeling fine, this is my time to shine. Itâs not too late, the futureâs getting underway.â Don't Brother Me âAlways in the sun, with your Number One⊠sick of all your lying, your scheming and your crying,â âCome on and give peace a chance, take my hand, be a man.â Shine a Light âCome on, shine a light,â "Universalize" Ballroom Figured âDid you ever loan me that song? Did you ever know me at all? Listen to the world going round, looking through a hole in the wall⊠shoving our loving away⊠never once looking to say, we got the ride of our lives,â
