Popular wasn't the right word, I more meant "why are they so consensual ?" In real life, I've met people disliking The Beatles, The Stones, Oasis, Radiohead, The Beach Boys, Mozart, Bach, etc. But I can't remember someone saying to me "I don't like Queen". And a song like Bohemian Rhapsody is often cited among with A Day In The Life or Good Vibrations as one of the greatest songs of all the time, and that's pure madness. But yeah Freddie Mercury is probably one of the most charismatic frontman ever. I think a lot of it is to do with the perceptions around the individuals in the band or the type of mood they evoke. The Beatles is a different case - being the biggest thing ever, you’re always going to get some stickler who wants to take them down a notch. Stones (well I probably dislike them more than Queen, like them their songs have no emotional depth for me), there are a lot of people who dislike the pseudo-rebellious posturing and their heritage act hasn’t done them any favours. Oasis - rip off merchants and both brothers charmless and arrogant antics don’t help, Radiohead - popularly seen as pretentious miserbalists, Beach Boys - glorified barbershop quartet music that is extremely overrated, Mozart, Bach - classical music is off limits for many who see it as an upper class indulgence. Not my opinion on any of these acts by any means (I love them all aside from The Stones) but the kind of assumptions many make! Usually the kind of stuff that’s just cliche and I can’t be bothered to argue about. But a lot of things work in Queens favour massively over all these acts. (1) Massive but not so critically revered like The Beatles for people to really rebel against. (2) Freddie Mercury’s legacy - his death was sudden and a shock despite rumours in the months preceding it and he died in his peak. The memories of him are purely as a performer at the peak of his game. The death from AIDS and his final frail appearance on camera (final single was something like ‘These Could Be The Best Days Of Our Lives’ or something like that) provides added poignancy to his what was a previously deified invincible public persona. He never got the opportunity to grow into a miserable old tosser like 99% of other rock stars. (3) Live - performances so euphoric and quite obviously full of joy that even a sceptic like me holds up my hands and concedes that this above all undermines all criticisms. No act has come close to having such crowds in the palm of their hands. Thinking retrospectively, this may also be linked to (2) in the sense that there is also an underlying poignancy watching Mercury at the top of his game.

Queen is rock music your granny can dig (believe me—I speak with authority here). Therefore they’re not real rock music. Just really naff pop music given a rockist makeover.

If nothing else, Freddie inspired my favourite Paul Weller quote:

Speaking of pronunciations I was shocked the day I found out that "schedule" is NOT pronounced with a k-sound.

I didn't know how close Franck Nivard is to losing his licence. I wonder if they breath test him after every race now.

Actually both ways are correct, it just depends on what part of the planet you’re standing on. Plus, anyone who judges you on the way you pronounce schedule is a dick. X PS If you’re going round pronouncing schedule incorrectly you’re probably saying project wrong too. Thank me later.

I’ve never seen Harry Potter Second one is pretty solid, and that professor turning into a werewolf was awesome in the fourth, but other than that, I guess you'll be fine not having seen them.

Third > Second. I think the third one is the only one worth watching if you're not emotionally attached to the books.

You reminded me that it was the third one I meant when I wrote the fourth, but I do prefer the second one tbh. With that said I think I made this ranking more than five years ago.

read the books. apart from the amazing soundtrack from john williams these movies dont do the books justice. i do like them because it was part of my childhood but i do hope they remake it some day soon. harry potter would be great as a series to give rowlings world more room to breath. the movies focus too much on harry.

Here's another "there, I said it!": I haven't read a single page from any Harry Potter book, so I can't say anything about that!

I think the third one was the only one where they got it completely right. Tonally it is whimsical and fun with just the right amount of darkness. There's still a sense of wonder about it all; and Hogwarts actually feels like a school populated with kids being kids and teachers with big personalities, and not just somewhere Harry and Hermione spend their time. It's a great adaptation, as well, losing shit that wasn't necessary and adding stuff in to make it work better for the screen. It's a shame they couldn't get Alfonso Cuarón back for the later instalments. The director who ended up doing the last four (as well as the new Fantastic Beasts films) is fine but doesn't have the same visual flair, in my opinion.

For some reason I remembered today the time when my parents told me what my name would have been, had I been born a girl instead. I was about 11 or so, and my imagination went wild. What would I look like, would I be the shy one in the back of the classroom, or the girl all boys would be looking at? Who would I have been if my name would have been.........*drumrolls*............Julia?
Please tell me there is someone else that can relate to this.

If I’m lucky enough to have a child when I’m ready it’s already decided a daughter would be called Lennon. Pref a son tbh (won’t be Lennon!) but you can’t choose apparently ☺️
