April 27th 1999, UK band The Verve announced that they had split. They scored the 1997 UK No.1 single 'The Drugs Don't Work' and their 1997 UK No.1 album 'Urban Hymns' spent over 100 weeks on the UK chart. Leader of the group Richard Ashcroft went solo scoring the 2000 UK No.3 single 'A Song For The Lovers' and the 2000 UK No.1 album 'Alone With Everybody.'

Saw them supporting Oasis @ Earls Court around the time Urban Hymns came out. Not a bad support act eh

If we see this The Verve never released a bad album. Ashcroft did.

I've been listening to the Verve a lot and just realised that we haven't heard anything from Richard Ashcroft for a year now. I was wondering if he's just taking some time off or if he's not doing well or something. Then I stumbled upon this tweet: "Hope it's not true what I heard about Richard Ashcroft, being a shadow of himself, majorly depressed & as my mate put it 'on his last legs'" Reading this brings tears to my eyes and my question to you is, if any of you have heard anything about him?

I've seen him a few times recently in Richmond walking along the road with his mrs, shades on, also in Starbucks as well. Always looks pretty moody or miserable, so hard to tell. Hope he's alright.

Thanks for your answer! Yeah, I think he was never the happiest looking person on earth. I just imagine meeting Richard Ashcroft at Starbucks

Unfortunatelly I've never seen The Verve. They didn't tour in Europe when they were reunion in 2008 (except Pinkpop), but I've seen Ashcroft with his band back in 2010. I've seen him walking on the street with the bandmembers before the gig, but I wasn't sure if it was him. Half an hour later I met him again outside the venue and he was really nice. I asked him for his autograph on my "Urban Hymns" artwork and he said "It's a shame that a great album like this had no autograph on it yet". He asked my name and asked if I was there for his gig later the day.
I always thought Richard Ashcroft would be a very arrogant man, but he wasn't at all, same as Liam Gallagher. I hope he's alright and wish him the best of the luck with whatever he does.

Their first album, 'A Storm in Heaven' is my favourite ever album! This! People go on about Urban Hymns but their first album blows it out of the water imo.

Liam and Richard both seem to have huge but fragile/sensitive egos. They can be extremely nice and personable but if they are in a foul mood, or have a bad day they can say/do mean things. They have a lot in common. Similar ages, both extremely talented singers, and they have instigated the break up of their own bands. Both of their careers have hit a cross roads of sorts.
I wish them nothing but the best. I'm pretty sure Richard suffers from depression. I hope both of them can turn it around. They may be past their creative and vocal primes but they can still find purpose and enjoy music.

I think Richard's voice is still one of the greatest (has it changed that much?), so I wouldn't write him off. It's just sad that he apparently doesn't get on with the other band members anymore, because I thought "Forth" was very good!

I would have liked to have heard what the band could of cooked up following their commercial break through Urban Hymns. We deserved a new Verve album in 2000. Not 2008.

Urban Hymns is one of my favourite albums ever! Fantastic album, remember listening to this on tape non stop in school from the start of 4th year to the end. Sonnet and Space and Time are two of my favourite songs ever. Ashcroft hasn't touched it's greatness since but the hero of this album is Nick McCabe is one of British rock's underrated and neglected guitarists.

By the way Northern Soul is every bit as great, it's a little darker and downbeat. But every bit the equal of Urban Hymns for me anyway.
Forth was a bit of a let down really.

There are times I just listen to them for hours ...... Great band man I feel nowadays they ain't given the love that Oasis Radiohead or Blur get from the public. Maybe that's thanks to the somewhat patchy reunion and Ashcroft failing returns as a solo artist. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't see a lot of love out there for the Verve.

I never understood that ... I mean there best stuff is right there , I think it's just they were never the " sexy " band ...oasis vis blur ...mesmerized a generation ..Radiohead. Had all the tech geeks cumming in there pants ..... The verve just played balls out .... Got overlooked ...every bit as good if not better at times IMO
