Beady Eye singer Liam Gallagher isn't looking back Aidin Vaziri Sunday, November 27, 2011 Liam Gallagher didn't waste any time starting a new band when Oasis called it quits after one last brawl with his brother Noel backstage in Paris in 2009. "It took about four beers," he says, confidence unscathed. Beady Eye (which also includes Oasis guitarists Andy Bell and Gem Archer and drummer Chris Sharrock) released its first album, "Different Gear, Still Speeding," earlier this year. The group plays Friday at the Regency Ballroom. Q: You're playing clubs again. Is it hard going back after you performed in every major arena in the world with Oasis? A: Not at all. I would much rather be in Oasis, but that wasn't to be. I'm not going to stop making music just because Noel isn't going to be in a band with me. I've already been in one of the biggest bands in the world. Some of the times are good and some are s-. It's all about being happy, and I'm having a good time right now being in Beady Eye. Q: How is the new stuff going over live? "Bring the Light" must sound like the apocalypse. A: It's like the Pistols with a piano. Q: You're not playing any Oasis songs. Isn't it a bit like Paul McCartney going out and just playing "Pipes of Peace"? A: I could if I wanted to play it, but we started out this band saying we're not going to play those songs. We're going to stick with it. It's a lot more than can be said by Noel Gallagher. He'll never know if people are coming to hear him or Oasis. We're getting people who want to see Beady Eye. That, to me, is success. Q: Do you regret that you and Noel can't work things out? A: No, I don't want to work anything out. He took the ball and left. The reason we split up is I'm not on his payroll. He could sack everyone else in the band, but he couldn't do that with me. I told him how f- it was and the only way for him to go was leaving the band. So he left. I don't miss being in a band with Noel. I actually like who I am and what I stand for. He's a bit of a social chameleon. He wouldn't look out of place in Coldplay's band. Q: What are your ambitions this time around? Do you want Beady Eye to play Knebworth in five years? A: I want to make Beady Eye as big as possible. I want to turn on kids in Uruguay, L.A. and Manchester. I'm not taking my foot off the gas. {sbox} Beady Eye: 9 p.m. Fri. $40-$50. The Regency Ballroom 1290 Sutter St., S.F. (415) 673-5716. www.theregencyballroom.com. www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/11/27/PK6O1M0RRA.DTL

THIS! This is what I respect about Liam. At one point I asked myself that same question. Yeah enjoyed both gigs I went to. Being a fan I enjoyed both his solo stuff and the Oasis but, what about the other ppl in attendance....and the question remains...guess Noel will never know...or maybe he does know and just doesn't want to believe the truth....

Yeah, I've been losing more and more respect for that Noel Gallagher. And every-fuckin-body still thinks Liam was the ass all this time. Oh well...no water off my back, cause, like, I need to get a proper job or I will kill myself, yea? economy's tough, man, and the fuckin' working market don't fuckin pay me no mind to pontificate about who's fucking up who anywayzz, dja know what I mean?

Noel is branding himself as the solo artist Noel Gallagher with a bunch of session musicians and as such is promoting "himself" rather than the band, that's why it doesn't matter when the songs he wrote[/u] were written. Beady Eye, on the other hand are promoting themselves as a new band and a "fresh start" so they couldn't really have played old songs.
I think that's the obvious thing about it, not sure why others seem so worked up by this?

And you're are right, it is obvious but I still don't really see how what you said effects the validity of this 'He'll never know if people are coming to hear him or Oasis'. There is truth in that and its probably a mix of people in that respect.

I meant in general, not so much in this thread. I see it popping up all over the place. Perhaps I should have posted it elsewhere.

Maybe Noel doesn't give a shit if they're coming to see his new songs or Oasis songs. I would gather that the vast majority of people coming to the Toronto show I was at were there for both.
Noel is playing his entire new album minus one tune, plus two other new songs. If people are just coming for the Oasis songs, they're certainly getting some nice exposure to his great new tunes.
We all know what Noel's live audience would be if he just played High Flying Birds songs. Significantly larger than Beady Eye in the UK, about the same worldwide.

No one was talking about size of crowds. We all know that to be true. I doubt Noel does give a shit. I don't really get what your saying. We were just commenting on Liam's specific comment which in its self is not an unreasonable one. If you really don't like Beady Eye you are not going to go watch them play a set of Beady Eye songs. If you don't really like Noel's album the thought of quite a few Oasis songs makes forking out the money a lot more palatable.

Well, some people who were at the TO Beady Eye show were expecting to hear Oasis songs. Was quite funny to hear them complain afterwards. I guess they didn't read band interviews. ;D I suppose you are technically right that Noel will not absolutely know the true intentions of the people coming to his shows. I question the relevance of that, as he well knows that people would come to his shows if he just played NGHFB songs-probably just not as many. I just hate validating these comments by each of the brothers which are clearly meant to diminish the other. I just wish they'd just say "we hate each other, but I wish the other guy well". Which is what Noel and Liam have occasionally said, but they refuse to stick to that script.

I know you cant go back in time now but, I sure as fuck wish Noel would not be playing Oasis songs and just his new solo stuff to put this whole debate to rest. Same shit with Macca. If half his set didnt consist of Beatles songs, would he be packing in the venues if it was only his solo stuff? I think not...but then again HE is a Beatle.

Some of his solo hits sold more than any Beatles hit in the UK.

Why in earth would he not play Beatles songs? What would you have him play? Everything since 1970? Everything since Wings broke up? I don't follow.... What is this fascination with having a set with no Oasis songs? We're all here because we love Oasis songs. Noel's basically playing all of his new stuff that has been released, plus one that hasn't. The Oasis songs are a bonus. I would not want an artist to play songs he didn't want to play. But if Noel is happy to play Wonderwall again-which he clearly is-that's fine with me...

Well, Paul didn't play Beatles songs right out of the gate. It wasn't until '76 (I believe -- feel free to check my facts) that he threw a handful in. And Wings were one of the biggest bands in the world at that point, so it wasn't because he needed to.

He played Yer Blues at a charity show I believe in 1969 while still in The Beatles and he performed Come Together at Madison Square Garden in 1972 which was also a charity show for children. At the MSG show that was the only Beatles song he performed, the rest were solo efforts plus an Elvis cover. He popped up on tv shows every now and again playing solo material only.
