MAN CITY nut NOEL GALLAGHER wants to buy the turf from the team’s old Maine Road stadium – to build a mini version of the ground in his back garden.
And it doesn’t stop there. He also wants to buy SEATS and even a TURNSTILE. The OASIS guitarist is gutted his beloved team have moved after 80 years and the stadium is being demolished. He is prepared to spend thousands on pieces of the club’s history — including seats from the Kippax stand where he used to watch City as a kid in the Seventies. A pal of Noel’s told me last night: “It’s heartbreaking for Noel. Some of his happiest memories are of standing in the Kippax abusing Manchester United players. He heard some of the ground was being sold off and jumped at the chance of buying it. “They are flogging the whole pitch. Noel wants enough for a seven-a-side replica so he’ll need maybe half of it.
“He also wants proper seats to go around the pitch and has got his heart set on one of the original turnstiles to give the whole thing a big-match feel. “He can’t wait to hold games there with his mates. You could say Maine Road is going to be Noel’s new home ground.” The club is moving to the City Of Manchester Stadium, home of last year’s Commonwealth Games. Historic items from the old ground are being auctioned off on Sunday. Even the boardroom table and corner flags are up for grabs.
Seats will start at around £12.50, with turf at around £10 a clump. A spokesman for the firm handling the sale said: “This is to give something back to the fans.” Noel plans to returf the pitch he has at his mansion near Chalfont St Giles, Bucks. The estate is currently undergoing major renovation. Brother LIAM is City mad, too. He has set his heart on a light blue rug bearing the club’s badge from Maine Road reception area.
