Just found out about it yesterday (27th) as I've had no internet or tv for the last 5 days as I was in the country
Apparently tied to Al-Qaeda. Very concerning how he got on board without a passport and despite the warning from the guys father. We got very lucky with this one, like Richard Reid.

what a terrible thing to do, and here's hoping that the beating they gave him on the flight leaves him permanently disabled. the only thing the nsa will do now is impose even more restrictions on travelers, which will do absolutely nothing.

I served 3 years in the israeli anti-aircraft alignment in a post-9/11 world and im just shocked that this thing could happen. I really didnt belive a terrorist could actualy get on a plane again....

i could have seen it coming. all airport security does is make upper middle class white people think it's safe to fly. nothing more. airport security is as bad and incompetent as it ever was. the only thing that made airplanes safer is the addition of the bolted door to the cockpit that can only be opened from the inside.
i think comparing israel to america is a little much. el al has different safety procedures due to, well, the threat of rockets being shot at the planes and all the dangerous people who could blow the planes up from the inside.

Apparently this kind was a loner, barely, if at all, connected to terrorist groups, but serious why the hell can't we have imaging machines in every airport? If it looks suspicious make them strip. Flying is a privilege, not a right.
Also, why do we have watch lists if they don't mean a damn thing? If somebody's on a watch list make them take a boat or train. Or maybe not, since sea and train security is even more pathetic.

I'm thankful no one was hurt.
People can use the most advanced technology in the world, but the most powerful way to stop terrorism, is to stop giving people a reason to become terrorists.
It's quite easy to be susceptible to terrorist groups when we go around the world, looting resources, bombing countries, raping & torturing, etc. etc.
I believe that as Americans, this is an issue of pride for many of us. We’re not prepared to take a non violent route to our solutions. But war, and torture are not keeping us safe. Who cares about finding Bin Laden if we are creating 10 more of him everyday?
Terrorism isn’t a genetic trait. Some people believe that all (Muslims) are destined for terrorism. When you are in a war zone, or an unstable environment, people become desperate. When you see terror and warfare all around your community, your mind is contaminated and at its most vulnerable point. That’s how the concept of militarism and terrorism became popular. The Koran does not teach terrorism, it is the leaders within these communities who know how to convince people that these are Islamic acts and are justified. Our wars have made these teachings popular and more widely believed. For those of you who have recognized the war propaganda machine our country, don’t you remember how good Americans were taken advantage of after 9/11? With all the paranoia, Guantanamo bay and patriot act garbage? That’s similar to what is going on in the Middle East….except, we create a 9/11 everyday for Iraqis and Afghans…that’s why this is a much bigger problem in that region.
I say this as an American who is interested in the safety and peace of my country. If we don't realize the consequences for our actions, we will never be a safe and prosperous nation, andwe will lose our identities in the process.

I say this as an American who is interested in the safety and peace of my country. If we don't realize the consequences for our actions, we will never be a safe and prosperous nation, andwe will lose our identities in the process. The terrorist came from a wealthy background and from good (it seems) parents. He wasn't exactly directly affected by US foreign policy. Terrorists use US foreign policy as a justification for their actions, but the main cause is their twisting of Islam. Your viewpoint that the US is causing there to be terrorists is incredibly misguided due to the simple fact that terrorists have existed for centuries, it's nothing new. Furthermore, what are you on about - the US doesn't take a non violent route? You clearly don't know your history nor anything about contemporary times, for that matter. JFK created the Peace Corp which is incredibly successful to this day. The US provides ample aid to developing countries and is always the first and most supportive nation when a natural disaster occurs in the world (see the Tsunami incident for one of the more recent examples). Additionally, yes Iraq was poorly handled. But ask the Iraqis if they liked being free from the dictatorial and murderous Saddam Hussein. Ask them in the coming decade(s) when things become even smoother if they are thankful. Iraq was a fought poorly, but at the start of the war, Iraqis supported what the US was doing by a landslide. The current militant Islamic terrorist is not caused by the US, but it's rather a clash of ideologies. They twist religion in hope of bringing down Western civilization. Take note that in Bin Laden's declaration of war on the US (also note he declared war on us and not the other way around) that one of his demands is for the US to convert to Islam (and you still deny this is about religion?). Also, this failed terrorist converted to Islam and became radicalized (according to his own father). What does converting to Islam have to do with US foreign policy? Nothing. Exactly. I hope you realized that if the US pulled out of every Arab land tomorrow and threw its weapons into the sea, the terrorists would still be plotting attacks (note how Spain remains to be a target even though they yielded to the terrorist demands of pulling troops out after the 2004 Madrid bombing). However, if the terrorists all decided to stop fighting us, we would have no reason to be in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. Your whole post was flawed in every sense.
