Hey everyone, I hope I'm posting this in the right place, it's not political....its actually personal, but I hope we can still talk about it.
So I'm 20 years old, I'm going to school full time. I'm receiving an academic scholarship; I spend quite a bit of time volunteering in my community as well.
Last December I made a really stupid mistake. I got fired from my job for trying to steal a game. I worked at this small video game store for well over a year. I was always part time, because I was going to school full time. I never made any mistakes, I got along with most of my coworkers, and I treated customers with the upmost respect. New employees started coming in. I didn't get along with them. some of them were being promoted to managers for their sales skills and availability. They would boss me around, showing me no respect. My store manager was great, but the other managers were really difficult to deal with. They were not very strict, and actually stole money from a wallet that was left in our store. I refused to partake in any of that. But anyway, towards the end of last year I got fed up and felt disrespected by the company, so I stole a game (which I even already had). I was confronted about it, and I gave the game back and was sent home. It was one of the most embarrassing and darkest days of my life. I'm a good student, and a hard working hones person. I was fired from that job. I contacted the district manager of the store a few weeks ago about possibly working back there and restoring my name, but he said he couldn't take the chance.
The was only my second job, but now I'm in a real bind. I can't find a job, some job applications I don't mention the employment termination or I do mention it. I haven't received any responses. I just wanted your advice on how to deal with this situation. I'm only 20, I don't want to ruin my employment chances in the future because of this one stupid mistake. Should I even list this store on my job history? People can see it with my SS# right? And if I don't list it, employers will ask me what I was doing for those 2 years.
I'm just so frustrated with my self, and I haven't told anyone about this. So any advice would be greatly appreciate, thanks

Tell them. They'll fnd out through private employment screening services. But tell them you worked there for 2 years and it didn't work out. You're looking for something else. Are you American? If so, there is NO WAY an employer will tell a prospective employer anything bad about you. You're gone, they've moved on, and they are too fearful of lawsuits. "He worked here 2 years, made $8.75 per hour, left in April 2009". Period. That's all they'll say.
Even if you live in privacy - starved Brittain and they give more detail? You had a clash of personalities, new guy had it in for me, I left, they claim I was fired. Look how great you find me throughout the rest of my interview. Their loss. They lost a good man. Did I tell you about the charity work I do?
If that little incident is your only problem, you'll be fine.

Don't listen to him. Dear Abby won't get back to you with solid advice. I will.

Yep, I'm an American. But I'm afraid my previous employer would still mention the "event" if contacted. When I called my District Manager, and asked him if I should list this as a reference he said, "Well its in your job history. And If they call me I have to be honest, and I can't sugar coat anything. "
Well they won't call him, because he is not stay at the store I worked at. And some of the employees at the store are new, the store manager just came from a diff. store, but the douchebag manager who caught me is still working there.
And the only thing I fear is that employers will ask the company about my character and history. One job interview I attended today asked me, what would your store manager, say about you? And they said they would contact him to learn about my work history.
Thanks for your advice chemist, especially that last paragraph. I know many people throughout the community that could vouch for the honest and trustworthy person I am.

in a job interview only tell them what they need to know. personally i doubt if they contact your previous manager that they will give a bad reference, cos if they do there just gonna get more of these calls when you go for other jobs, and no one wants that kind of hassle.

Good advice. I wouldn't worry about it. It's not like you've been robbing cnvenience stores to support your crack habit.

Well I can't speak for the US, but I', sure that here in the UK you are not allowed to give somebody a bad reference. You can turn down their request to give them a reference however. But you're right, I've had to give references to people who worked under me and who were complete bawbags, but I still gave them a decent one just for the reason you stated.

I wouldn't be too worked up, most employers don't contact previous employers of part time employees especially for a, no offense, small time job like a video game store
