I like it but I wish the vocals were mixed a bit higher. That's on first listen mind you, my opinion might evolve. Brilliant guitar tone

I like it but I wish the vocals were mixed a bit higher. That's on first listen mind you, my opinion might evolve. Brilliant guitar tone I think his vocals have been mixed way too high before, so I'm more happy with the levels on this new stuff. By Bloodflowers and The Cure it was just ridiculous. Those albums sound like Robert Smith doing karaoke. The backing tracks were flat and lifeless while Robert's voice, even when he's murmuring lyrics, just towered above. I love his voice, but you can't get a vibe or atmosphere going with just a voice. Not with the kind of tunes The Cure write anyway. The instruments do a lot of the heavy lifting, and Robert's voice should just be the final ingredient to make it all stick together.
(I'm also happy that this album looks set to come in at under an hour. Too many Cure albums have grown to be too long.)

I adore this. Robert's lyrics are so starkly moving, and Reeves Gabrels' guitar solo only adds to the emotion of it.

I wanted to listen to this for a while before giving my opinion. My 3 favourite bands are Oasis, The Cure and Radiohead and when any of the members from those groups put anything out I get a bit overhyped and fall into the recency bias trap a bit and tend to over rate things a little. But over 2 weeks into this release I still think it's amazing. It's a short album in terms of amount of tracks but length wise it's pretty standard and there isn't a single dull or uninspired moment. You can tell they really worked on these songs and developed them as much as they can. I've said before that 4:13 Dream sounds like a collection of demo's or first takes, this is the complete opposite and sounds really well thought out and so tight and cohesive.
I really enjoy Bloodflowers and the self titled album but I'm pretty confident by this point in saying that this is my favourite release since Wish. It might even be on par with Wish, it doesn't quite have the high points that album had but there's not a single moment of filler.

Now that Songs of a Lost World has bedded in a bit, here's my attempt at ranking all their albums in order of preference.
1. Disintegration 10/10 2. The Head on the Door 9/10 3. Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me 8.5/10 4. Seventeen Seconds 8.5/10 5. Wish 8/10 6. Pornograph 8/10 7. Faith 8/10 8. The Top 7.5/10 9. Songs of a Lost World 7/10 10. The Cure 7/10 11. Bloodflowers 7/10 12. Wild Mood Swings 6.5/10 13. 4:13 Dream 6/10 14. Three Imaginary Boys 6/10

It's nice to see someone else who enjoys their self-titled album. Some Cure fans really hold that record in contempt, and even Robert has called his least favourite Cure album recently, below even their debut.
I'm always puzzled as to why it sounds like it does (keyboards buried, guitars hard panned, drums as dry as a bone, vocals too loud again, etc.), and it's way too long -- like everything else from middle-period Cure (which I think of as post-Disintegration, up to and including their last record before their 2010s recording hiatus). BUT I do really rate the songwriting. As far as the quality of the material goes, 2004's The Cure is their best since Wish, I think -- and I'm including Songs of a Lost World in that, which like you I also think is a bit lacking in truly high points. Apart from 'The Promise', which I would rather they'd cut, and a few other songs that sound a little undeveloped, it's all really strong stuff to my ears. And some of it is quite different from their usual compositional style. I'm always impressed at some of the bridges and middle eights, and shifts in rhythm and dynamics in the songs, which you don't tend to hear from The Cure elsewhere.
Robert's vocal performances are really committed too. I mean, he mostly shouts through it all, which becomes tiring towards the end (see 'The Promise'), but his full-throated roar on some of the songs genuinely always surprises and excites me. I love his voice generally, but I didn't know he had that kind of performance in him before I listened to this album. Sometimes when Robert belts it out on other Cure stuff he can sound like Zed from the 'Police Academy' films (credit to my dad for that observation), but on The Cure he goes for the shouty-singer-in-a-MOR-indie-rock-band bit, and he pulls it off about as well as anyone.

Finally got their new album and I’m listening to it as I type, track 6 right now. I absolute love it. Their first ever number 1 in their decades long career. Well deserved.
