Cemeteries of London: 10/10 Lost: 8/10 42: 6/10 Lovers in Japan: 7/10 Yes: 6/10 Viva La Vida: 7/10 Violet Hills: 5/10 Strawberry Song: 6/10 Death and All His Friends: 10/10 Not a bad album, just not good either. Average is the best word to describe it. It's not going to win album of the year. - Let's see what the big boys do, ie U2 (although i do hate U2) and Oasis My album ranking: 1.) AROBTTH: 5/5 2.) Parachutes: 4/5 3.) VLV: 3/5 3.) X+Y: 3/5 No

It's very similar to X+Y, and still a step down from both AROBTTH and Para.

Death and All His Friends is by far the best on the album, it's fucking epic. Could very well be song of the year, although I still have high hopes for Record Machine and/or whatever else Noel throws our way. But Death and all His Friends is fucking fantastic (well, the first half at least)

Life In Technicolor 8/10 It's difficult to give full marks to an instrumental. It's certainly no Fuckin' In The Bushes. Still, it's a good, uptempo track to open the album with.
Cemeteries Of London 10/10 Great track. This has simply got to be the live opener.
Lost! 7/10 Having heard the 'acoustic' version, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. The basic structure is exactly the same, but the percussion gives it a nice change of direction.
42 6/10 Probably the worst lyric on the album. A little dull to begin with, but the song picks up when the drums come in at 1:35. The guitars certainly give it a kick up the arse.
Lovers In Japan 7/10 Starts well, but fades away a little in the middle. The guitar at the end brings back the track's edge.
Reign Of Love 5/10 Too maudlin to really be taken seriously. Little more than filler.
Yes 8/10 Excellent intro. Moody vocals that bear little comparison to anything I've ever heard from Chris Martin before. The strings are utilised sparingly, but to perfection. Strong chorus.
Chinese Sleep Chant 6/10 Epic-sounding, guitar-led instrumental. Again, little more than filler.
Viva La Vida 8/10 Great lyrics, and an excellent string arrangement leading the backing track. Would have benefitted from more emphasis on percussion and guitar from the first chorus onward.
Violet Hill 9/10 Starts with a pointless 30-second 'atmospheric' intro, but soon redeems itself. A lively guitar track and belting percussion, supporting Chris Martin's powerful lead vocal. The most interesting track Coldplay have ever written, in my estimation.
Strawberry Swing 6/10 The weakest of all the 'proper' songs on the album. The guitar track is decent enough, but it feels like it's missing something.
Death And All His Friends 7/10 Sounds like three tracks mixed into one. The simple vocal and piano section is great to begin with, but it becomes a little difficult to keep track of once the tempo change kicks in at about 2:20. Lacks a proper ending.
Overall 8/10 My biggest criticism is the relative lack of guitar on the album. The percussion and string arrangements are fantastic, but certain songs (Viva La Vida, in particular) kind of plod along without the guitar there to lift them up a notch. Chris Martin's lyrics have certainly improved in parts, as have his vocals. He's moved away from falsetto, and back to a more moody and honest singing style, which compliments certain songs perfectly.
In parts, though, it seems like they're trying too hard to be 'interesting'. Sometimes they succeed (Violet Hill, Yes); other times they don't. Death And All His Friends is definitely the worst offender in this sense; it's really more confusing than interesting.
Over to you, Oasis.

anyone could pm me Life In Technicolor?, i got it from a torrent with shite quality... about Coldplay wanting to be interesting, i think critical acclaim from... let me see a band called Radiohead affects Chris Martin, he wants to evolve and make his Ok Computer, i think he is forcing it and thats the problem,, he's trying to hard... he has to let go...

First things first: this album is gonna sell shitloads and is gonna be played every single minute on tv and on the radio. It's just something we all know.
Having said that, I think it's a weak album. I also think they're trying to do a radiohead in some kind of way. I like the songs we've already heard (violet hill and viva la vida), cementeries of london and yes. the piano version of lost was brilliant, but the album version sounds dull to me. the rest is just the same boring coldplay stuff. nothing to do with their first two albums.
then some smart music journalist will still say that oasis is stuck in a time warp...

First things first: this album is gonna sell shitloads and is gonna be played every single minute on tv and on the radio. It's just something we all know. I'm not so sure. Yeah it will sell well, but I think you're exaggerating a bit. X+Y turned a lot of people off Coldplay, it was that dissapointing - kind of like how BHN ended Oasis' flight at the top. Then the first single they relesased was Violet Hill - which got mixed reviews (either you like it or despise it), when they would have been better picking a song like Speed of Sound to be the first single, something to draw everyone back into them. So anyone sitting on the edge of liking Coldplay after X+Y will have made their mind up not to buy the album if they hated Violet Hill. Normally, if I really like a band but get the album for free early, I will still buy the album if I like it. Like with Oasis - support the band, give them money they deserve. But if I'm disappointed, then I don't see the need for me to waste money, so I full well know I'm not buying this Coldplay album. It's going to be one of the better albums of the year, and it's going to sell well enough, but that's only going to occur based on Coldplay's big name and previous success, and not on the album itself. Could this be Coldplay's final nail in the coffin? I think we're already for Oasis to come in and save music once again, I think we all will be blown away by what we're going to hear in September. For me, it's really between U2 and Oasis for best album of the year, and it's between those two for the biggest current band in the world, not Coldplay Mind you, I feel that Coldplay is trying to be U2 (not Radiohead). Either way, they need to stop forcing it. "You gotta be yourself, you can't be no one elese..."

Could this be Coldplay's final nail in the coffin? Not a chance. They've got a huge fanbase, and Oasis have proven that you can release 'lacklustre' (not my words) albums and still retain your popularity.

That earlier on this board, you've ranked 3/5, with 2 tracks reaching the note of 10/10 (according to you, right?) and 3 other tracks around 7/10 or highter... on a 10 songs album, it's pretty good, right? I guess you must not have bought BHN & SOTSOG & HEATHEN CHEMISTRY & DBTT...which, for the best of the list, deserves a 3/5 (DBTT) and the worst of them a 2/5 I think we're already for Oasis to come in and save music once again, I think we all will be blown away by what we're going to hear in September. The non-acoustic version of Lost is the worst acoustic to electric song ever. The drums sound awful. Makes me wonder if Chris Martin grabbed a little village in Africa or Latin America and was like "hey wanna do some drums on our new track?" The acoustic was one of my favorite coldplay songs but this version kills me. I'm only on that so i shall update

What the fuck are you talking about? Learn English if you're going to slag me off, cause you're making very little sense. And as for the Oasis albums you've mentioned: DBTT is a VERY good album, BHN is fun to listen to, and both SOTSOG and HC have some fantastic tracks on it And I can tell you, all 4 of those Oasis albums still get played by me. I can't see me listening to Viva La Vida in 10 years, let alone next year! I've given VLV several more listens, and I stand by my original opinion - it's average. In fact, the way they 'combined' songs like in Yes, Lost, Death and All His Friends, makes it that much worse - it just doesn't work. By doing that, Chris Marting was really trying to force being unique, but it comes across as desperate considering that whats tacked on to those songs is just filler. Costello, you can have your Viva La Vida, but I know when I'm in a Coldplay mood it'll still be AROBTTH that gets played. And I'm confident that the new Oasis album will make us say "Coldplay who?"/"Chris who?"
