NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- Hurricane Katrina weakened slightly as it pummeled the Gulf Coast Monday, but the powerful storm still had plenty of punch as it swept towards Mississippi with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph.
The storm passed just east of New Orleans, Louisiana, straining the system of levees and pumping stations that protect the low-lying city. About 70 percent of the city sits below sea level. (Full story)
A 20-foot storm surge is forecast as Katrina pushes inland.
Authorities in Gulfport, Mississippi, told CNN's Gary Tuchman that 10 feet of water covered downtown streets.
"Because the water is so deep, boats are floating up the street," Tuchman said. "There is extensive damage here. This is essentially right now like hell on earth."
"There is intense damage," he said. "We are watching the dismantling of a beautiful town."

I know but what are we in the medieval ages? I mean we send people to the moon and ships to Mars and we're mapping the humane genome and we're into quantum physics and we're slowly unravelling the mysteries of the universe-- and you're telling me they can't make wind resistent houses? And freaking advanced sewer systems so there isn't flooding?

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- Floodwaters rose in New Orleans on Tuesday after Hurricane Katrina forced a levee near the city's center to give way. The rising water hindered rescues of dozens, perhaps hundreds of people in the city who are trapped in homes and other buildings. "We probably have 80 percent of our city underwater, with some sections of our city, the water is as deep as 20 feet," Mayor Ray Nagin said Monday night.

HEARD SOME STUFF.. UH.. this is the worst case scenario with the levies gone..OBVIOUSLY.. aide can't even be deployed to many areas.. 20 FT UNDER WATER WHERE FOOD WAS HOUSED FOR EMERGENCY..etc. ~ also said it does not help that it is such a poor part of the country TO BEGIN WITH,, many livED in shacks, now nothing ! they had no place to evacuate to ! ~officials here were not anticipating things this bad,, now they have to even see where clinics exist and which ones still standing..etc a mess . arm chair officials best get on the stick ! ~like a 3rd world country now.. water and food - everything contaminated worst part.. ~ french quarters still intact as it was built highest up when 1st settlers got there.. new orleans as we know it is gone off the face of the map.. heaven help them all ! ~ hopefully services get deployed soon enuff.. long process... ~ wow, new orleans being the major port in US ! MASSIVE LONG TERM AFFECTS...

I heard on CNN two years ago Bush cut funding for re-building of levies that could have protected and possible been built to stop the problems you see right now.... They're were in planning to build new levies to stop level 3 hurricans.... Everyone can thank Mr. Bush on that...
This is worse disaster in American history worse than 9/11 sorry to say...

They're planning on trying to dam the flood waters to the city from what I've read, something about dropping bags of sand and stone at parts near the lake to stem water flow
New Orleans ain't sinking... it's sunk

The whole situation could have been handled better but I do agree it is definitely the worst natural disaster we have seen. cutting the budget and study and prediction of what happen if levies broke and how US prepared for it..was predicted 3 years ago and today it's all true... It's Bush job to make sure Americans are safe and he could done a lot more and faster action... He won't even have the guts to go down there right now... He ignores all predictions and cut the budget just like with 9/11.. He had reports of warnings on that also, but he cut American security funding before 9/11 and ignore all warning signs then, and look he did the same again.... He's the worse US President and he should be shot, because pain and lost American lives he have caused. he totally ruin American lifestyle..
