have a dvd writer on my new pc
bought dvd rom to make copying easier
aware the new drive has to be set to "slave" and asked the guy at the shop to do so
im sure hes done it wrong cos iv spent 3 hrs with all sorts of problems
just manageg to get back where i started with the pc and dvd writer which came with it working ok
but if i connect the new dvd rom my pc goes tits up on startup
how do i know if hes correctly set the jumpers to slave? there are no instructions with the drive and the compact website is useless
the plastic toggle is set on the middle of the 3 pins
whereas the toggle on the original is set on the right hand pin
is that ok?
any other thoughts PLEASE cos this is doing my head in
cheers

I used to have two CD drives on my old computer and it was a pain getting them setup. It's just one of those things that takes a lot of trial and error.
I think if you google around for the jumper settings for your model you can find something. Usually the jumper settings are written on the drive itself in a little diagram so it's odd that it's not on yours.
Also make sure the jumper on your original drive is set correctly as well.
If you do end up finding out the jumper settings, then try making the new one the master, and the old one the slave. It might just work. Sometimes it might even come down to what order they are plugged into the IDE cable (are you using the same IDE cable for both of them?)

a few things you should try: -enter the bios and check that every device is set as AUTO. -plug the dvd drive as a slave of your hard disk (if this is set as master) -leav the hard disk in one IDE cable and the new dvd drive in the other all alone and see if windows starts correctly hope you can make it work
