I'm useless with this kinda stuff, but earlier on I was watching a video, and all of a sudden the sound cut out. The volume levels with at the highest, so it couldn't have been that. I tried turning the CD/DVD drive acoustic silencer(whatever the fuck that is) on normal mode and that seemed to bring it back, but now the sound is really crappy, cuts out sometimes and is really crackly. I'm guessing my soundcard is fucked...anything I can do other than replace it? Is it just a simple case of updating drivers, or do I need a new one? I've tried restarting my computer to see if that would work but it didn't

1) what kind of sound card is it?
2) did you install some kind of game or codec recently?

SoundMax intergrated Digital Audio - if that makes sense? lol
It happened about 2 hours a go. I was in Movie maker cutting a clip when all of a sudden the sound stopped. Got it back by doing what I said up there ^^^ but its still crackly/fuzzy and cuts out sometimes..

oh, it's on-board. and that's weird
try re installing it. uninstall it and when windows detects it again, use the drivers cd (windows might want to use the drivers that remain in the system folder, choose the ones from the cd)

easy way. put the drivers cd, click on "SoundMax intergrated Digital Audio" or however it's presented and then you'll find 2 choices: re-install or delete drivers. choose delete, restart the computer and it will get detected again.
or else, go to control panel, system properties, hardware. select audio devices, remove the device and restart the computer

If I can't find the disc( Doh!) then would it work again if I restored it back to a couple of days ago when it worked fine?

well, if it's a software issue, probably. yes.
or else, you could try downloading the drivers from the motherboard website
