He speaks softly, with a touch of English aplomb that age must have given him. And he smiles at the jokes that he places here and there between a foul-mouthed interlayer and some shrewd lunges on music, life as a mature person, on the good old days that he seems not to regret at all: Noel Gallagher is ready to return with a new record, Council skies , which will be released on June 2, together with his High Flying Birds and has already given an appointment to Italian fans for next November 8 at the Mediolanum Forum in Milan. Ten new songs - which become many more in the deluxe version which also includes remixes by Robert Smith of the Cure (Pretty boy) and Pet Shop Boys (Think of a number) - composed during the lockdown: "Perhaps reflective is the adjective that I would use to describe this record", he explains, focusing on the cover photo, a shot by photographer Kevin Cummins which portrays the band's instruments positioned in the exact spot where there was the midfield of the historic Maine Road stadium, for eighty years the home of the 'loved Manchester City. This new Council skies has a lot of Noel and his melodic/melancholy taste, "for the period of time in which it was written and for having gone through some events in my personal life", he explains, perhaps referring to the announced divorce from his wife. “It all comes out in the songs,” he says. "But I believe that even in the most melancholy of the album there is always a little hope and that these songs were the best way to come back, because they come from a place of truth". In fact, with Council skies he said he wanted to go back to his origins and to that urge to make sincere and open songs like Easy now, one of the singles extracted together with Pretty boy, Dead to the world ("A great song with that noir atmosphere, one of my favorites on the record," he says) and the title track Council skies. To give a specific weight to some tracks then - the aforementioned Council skies, Pretty boy and Open the door, see what you find, there is the collaboration with Johnny Marr of the Smiths. "The music itself is the reward," says Noel. "Creating new songs from scratch that people will own is the greatest privilege and still doing it after 30 years is incredible. It would be very easy to put together a band that sounds like Oasis. It would be a great success, but it's not my idea. Especially in this time of wars and other crap stuff, if you're an artist and you can create, you should share good things with the world, even if only symbolic, because you could make someone happy somewhere." Music to him, he says, even saved him at the beginning, when he had nothing, no job or anything else. However, if Oasis hadn't arrived at that moment, he explains, "there would have been someone anyway, because there was a need for a generation to have a band of their own and we had decided to be that band. If the Verve ad example had exploded three years earlier perhaps the roles could also have been reversed" Next year will be the thirtieth anniversary of the release of Oasis' first album Definitely Maybe, but Noel talks about a reunion with his brother Liam (whom he manages to never mention). "Can 2024 be the good year? For the Champions League? With Haaland at City, anything is possible", he retorted, laughing. "However, in the Sony vault I found a lot of tapes from the Definitely Maybe sessions that we thought were lost and they're fucking awesome. All stuff you've never heard." And so yes, come on - he replies sarcastically to those who press him - "we will reform, we will do a gigantic tour and we will play everything in sequence, even Morning glory. And even the Beatles will reunite and the Sex Pistols, and John Lennon will return from the other world. But I find it difficult to try and recreate the past, the world is different and Manchester was different in the 80s and 90s and we were forced to invent our own world inside the music. The charts were dominated by bands, Oasis, Primal Scream, Verve. Today record companies love tea-drinking "keyboard bands" and it's so boring!" Tantalizing if it's something that's never been released even on bootlegs. Maybe unreleased songs, as various mixes of DM songs are already available?

I doubt it was even recorded to be honest, but if they have found it in the vaults then it wouldn’t have been from the Definitely Maybe sessions because Noel discussed doing it for a Blondie tribute album with Jimmy Destri at the New York Wetlands gig, which was in Oct 94, months after Definitely Maybe came out. Definition of Definitely Maybe Sessions are different for everyone. Would absolutely love to hear the demos from the recording session in Austin, Texas in early October. Recorded Talk Tonight and (It’s Good) To Be Free there.

Well, it sounds like we'll be shilling out for a 30th anniversary reissue. Glad they finally took a look around the vaults, and not just rummaged through the sock drawer.

Crazy how how many recordings are found after being "lost" or "mislabelled" for many bands, and years later they reappear for anthologies or reissues. Recording studios should hire personnel that can label sessions the right way, it's not that hard ! "Live Forever, take 458, without the cowbell, noel taping foot for drums" April 2, 1994. THERE YOU GO, EASY.

How much coke did you take while working on those files? 😛 Easy to see how shit got lost by young musicians and fiendish producers pre-digital, especially when analogue tape was limited. X

It's something to look forward to next year though this Definitely Maybe album. I would love to hear any more new songs which we don't know about if there are any of course.

I definitely wanna hear ‘em. X

X Ahah yeah, Mossy always the voice of reason. Obviously things get lost, but for Noel i have my doubts. From the beginning he looked like the guy who doesn't leave anything to improv. It makes a good story, that classic "lost recording found". It tickles the imagination and makes people want to hear them. If i was Noel, i would have listened to all the tapes available and planned the release for the next 10 DM anniversary re-releases. adding new and unheard stuff, with increasing interest, as the years go by. But i'm not Noel... PS: i nailed my demos on the first take, but Mixing was the bitch.

If they and Noel had genuinely planned out all the DM reissues in some 4D chess manner, the recent ones wouldn’t have been so shite! Anyway, glad to hear there’s more in the vaults, even if my wallet isn’t. We’ve got this, the Oasis demo tape he recently found and the AA album all still to come… Edit: and the Death In Vegas sessions. X

It's shit because they just dont have much material to work on, they released pretty much everything they recorded back then, simple. Noel's just following the Beatles formula about anthologies. First plain best of (stop the clocks), then anthology (spread into 2 or 3 anniversary releases because the vault isn't that big), then we'll get wild remasters and reworks. It's gonna happen that way. I dont think Noel isn't that stupid about that, he's gonna milk it the best way he can, by including little unheard stuff into every release for the next 2 releases (that's 10 years), then the remixes. What should be way more interesting will be the next records, when Noel actually spent time demoing. And the other guys too. Those releases are the most exciting for me to be honest. I havent even bought the past re-releases. Maybe i should, if only for the mustique versions. now thery are probably cheap
